Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

  • Whitecaps vs. Impact

by MiggyG on 2013-05-31BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Great game, great atmosphere, ultimately a disappointing result. We stood in the section behind the Curva Collective, which made for an entertaining evening. My only complaint is why can't Rennie put a man on the post on set pieces?!?!?

I had a great time at the Whitecaps vs Impacts game. Both teams played very well and lots of action from the beginning to the end.

  • Great family fun!

I booked tickets for me and my family, kids 9 & 6 yrs old, and it was a great environment for my kids!!!! We got to watch the southsiders cheer on the white caps, the opposing team fans chant and cheer throughout the game. The kids had great seats, and enjoyed watching the whole game!

  • Caps vs Timbers

There's not a bad seat in the house. Easy to purchase cheapest seats and make a quality move to season ticket holder no shows. Even without the move the seats on the diagonal lower section are great to view a game. seats were easy to find as game was in progress when we got there. Left in plenty of time but got stalled for over a half hour traffic jam. Why would the City have single lane traffic on Terminal on a game day? Entertainment for the dollar is far better than any standard Canuck game. Quality of football is definitely minor league but young players have talent. Coaching and tactics are very questionable as is the officiating. Don't expect big league dollars without a big league product. Look forward to some international exhibitions like Seattle hosts.

  • Vancouver Whitecaps

by Tripout on 2013-05-15BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This was a very "aerial" game in the sense of lots of high passes and kicks and too many worrying clashes of heads. When the game and passes got down onto the turf there was some, sometimes stunning passing and creating of space etc and the result speaks for itself. Reo-Coker once again a powerhouse of hard work, intelligent passing and setting up of sequences. Andy O'Brien, stunning in defence. Fearless and apparently tireless. So glad to see the "set-ups" being effectively "finished" . Hello Mr Tiebert! Love the "Caps". Keep it up and go even better! Great game!

  • Watch an Amazing Match

    by M3Lan13 on 2013-05-13BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Picked one of the best matches to go to. Not only did we win, but Teibert got his first goal! We had amazing seat off the the right side and we fortunate enough to see all the goals most perfectly

  • Game in a deep freeze

by Keesje on 2013-04-16BC Place - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Game was ok, quite enjoyable. But why do I, and maby others have to watch this sitting in a deepfreeze with an AC draft in my face. Come on, with climate control in this building,we should not have to shiver in our seats. Get a life

  • Great family fun

by Bubcus on 2013-04-15BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Took the kids and their grandfather to the game and we had a blast. Great atmosphere, great crowd, and close game ending in a tie.

We travelled from the Okanagan to see the game - a bit dissappointed with the team, they didn't really play well (no offence to speak of) and the goal they got wasn't really a fair goal, but we'll take it anyway. The roof was open and we found it very "cold". As far as the seats go, they were great. Thnx.

I found the south siders a big distraction and annoying , for that reason I will probably not return to watch another game

  • Whitecaps season-home opener was very memorable.

by McKcrew on 2013-03-04BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

We took our family of 5 and had a great time. Our birthday boy saw his favourite player in goal, Joe Cannon and we saw the Whitecaps win. The kids were disappointed Vancouver didn't score more. We had ackward moments when the crowd shouted "you big fat b*****d" everytime the opposition keeper took a goal kick and the kids asked what they were shouting. A near by fan suggested they were saying "you don't have mustard". For the rest of the game that is what our kids yelled.

  • Good seats - mediocre game

by moggsy on 2012-10-24BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Too bad the Whitecaps didn't play very well overall. However, there were a few exciting moments and the crowd kept us amused - especially the Southsiders and various members of the crowd wearing wigs representing mullets (a la Demerit).
