Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

Beautifull sunny afternoon, view of the snow capped north shore mountains. A boisterous crowd and another very competitive match for Whitecaps FC. A win would have been capper to a spectular afternoon. WHITE!...........CAPS!..........WHITE!..........CAPS!

  • Great game and atmosphere

by KarCas on 2011-04-26Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The game was full of action, the crowd was hyped and the seats were great. My husband and I were seated right behind the visitors goal. My advice, if you want to remain sitting and are not in to cheering, then sit on the sides of the field and not at either end because that is where the cheering sections sit. A few people were complaining who were in our section that it was too loud for them and at times they couldn't see because everyone was standing. So, if you would rather sit quietly, then choose seats which are NOT in behind the nets. If you love cheering then grab a seat behind the goal like my husband and I did and be prepared to cheer your heart out. Great game, good prices for tickets and a fabulous atmosphere.

  • Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs FC Dallas

by HappyBoomer on 2011-04-25Empire Field - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Was not impressed with the calibre of soccer. I can see why Canada cannot quality for the World Cup. When I watch professional soccer in the UK on TV it's almost like the soccer ball is attached to their foot. Whitecaps lack the same control.

  • Whitecaps rock.

Great game but a little over priced for the quality of the venue. I recommend this as we need to support this kind of event in Vancouver.

We went knowing it was to be a beautiful day which it was.... sitting in the stands with the view of the mountains, sun shining and people happy sing Oh cananda... Be prepared to stand and i would recommend the non-drinking section if your bringing your kids. Our family has been to many event but this was our first soccer game. The game its self was fun to watch... section 214-good view of everything, had we been able to sit and watch the game. We must have been in the roudy section. There were a couple of groups-over 20 of age who kept standing and told us they would be standing the entire game and swearing beyond acceptablitity- female bashing etc. regardless of my kids.So..with that in minds we weren't sure if this is normal at these game. I was surprised, at a hockey these guys would have been kicked out. Interesting. could be the price of the tickets or the type of crouds for socccer? We will try again in a differet section and see. My kids felt uncomfortable with the swearing to that extent. It was a what not to do as a learning lesson.

Amazing...Empire Field was beautiful and the crowd was fantastic! Trying to leave is a little overwhelming everyone is squeezing into the little room that is outside the field and out onto the sidewalks.

  • Great game...terrible frickin' food

by EggsBenny on 2011-04-18Empire Field - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

awesome atmosphere! Well worth the money to go to one of these games!

  • Great stadium

by Anon on 2011-04-18Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Empire Field is a great venue to watch soccer. Took me back to the early 1960's when my grandfather wouild take me to see the touring premier league teams playing at Empire Stadium. Too bad they were not staying in this venue. Your are relatively close up to the action as compared to the cavernous BC Place. Overall great fun, will be back for another game or two this season.

  • A great birthday present for my boyfriend.

by thequeenishome on 2011-04-18Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I knew he would want to see at least one game at Empire Field. The facility was great, we were in fourth row and had a fantastic view. The game was great and much more entertaining than I thought live soccer would be.

  • Whitecaps FC - hottest ticket in town!

Simply the best ticket in town. The atmosphere is incredible! You have to go.

  • Must See

by doit on 2011-04-08Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Make sure to sit in section 217 - you won't regret the atmosphere. Canucks and Lions' fans have nothing on the Southsiders.

  • by Anonymous on 2011-04-08Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Plain and simple it was an amazing atmosphere that anyone could get addicted to! Loved the setup and build up to the game! It was great!! Will be back for sure!

  • Lots of atmosphere! Every Game has been Fantastic!

by WhitecapsFCfan on 2011-04-08Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

South Side is Standing only. Not recommended for families or kids under 15, or anyone who is unable to stand for 90 minutes, lots of swearing, cheering and chanting here. North side or in the sideline stands would be a more civilized and family friendly experience and still have a great atmosphere and fantastic team to watch and support! Been to all three games, sat in different sections and they all have been fantastic! Very Loud compared to non playoff Canuck games. All the atmosphere is fan generated! No hands clapping, let's make some noise on the screen, no cheerleaders, no music, no break in the action, no distractions! Great place to watch a game. The night game at Empire was memorable! Great place to watch a game on the weekend too under the sun! No more ponchos;)

  • Whitecaps rock!

Second game we saw this week! If it wasn't for the special pricing we wouldn't have afforded to go. Glad we did, it was totally worth it. So much energy from the crowd and the team. Looking forward to a summer of more games!
