Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

  • Whitecaps vs Man City great game

Although the field was not in great shape. Both teams played their full line-ups and provided great entertainment and exciting football.

  • A Great Soccer Game!

    by Jules777 on 2011-07-11Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

This was the first game I have attended this season and it was fantastic! THe venue was great, I don't think there was a bad seat in the entire stadium. I had seats a couple rows behind the north goal and while the play at the other end of the field was a little hard to see, it was still very exciting. I didn't purchase any food or drinks, but they were easy to find and readily available should I have wished to eat or drink. It was a great game - we lost 1-0 in the last minute of play. I would definitely attend another game!

i would love to see the white caps more often if --- they won some more games. the woman play better ----- ticketmaster line up is too long for pickups ----- get more staff in the stadium so i dont have to line up so long for food and drinks. ------ please stop over charging $7 for a 14 oz bier. $5 for popcorn. i cant bring my kids

  • whitecaps are amazing

it is always fun to watch a whitecaps game because of the players' intensity. it is exciting to cheer with the other fans.

  • Mob mentality

by instructor on 2011-07-08Empire Field - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

I was sad to witness the mob mentality that was so prevalent in the fans we sat near. Group chanting of obscenities and slurs was the norm. I saw one father take his 2 small children out of the stands after about 20 minutes and I don't blame him. The Whitecap game experience was NOT a family show. Too bad that the team gets associated with these wanna be hooligans. I understand that there are songs ,chants& sayings that these "fans" can view & learn on a Facebook page that is tied to the WhitcapsThe organization might want to think about distancing itself from this. Sad for the soccer club, this is not their fault. Fans like this are exactly the typeof people you'd expect to see in the Stanley Cup riot footage. Sad for Vancouver : (

  • Really good game atmosphere

by Berzerker on 2011-06-23Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The seats were good. The game was good. The only thing that wasn't perfect was waiting in a huge line for will call tickets I'd bought a month prior. You'd think there would be a separate line for will call.

  • Everybody loves a winner!

    by willis2 on 2011-06-21Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Our first game at Empire! Being at the Stadium brought back lots of memories. The crowd was very supportive of the team. The fan cheering section was fantastic. We really enjoyed this great family event! Go Caps Go!

Good atmosphere for all ages, the South siders are very loud and rowdy. They sit in a designated section that we were right beside, and ended up with everyone in front of us standing up, blocking our view. I don't reccomend sitting near that section unless you will be standing too. But other than that, atmosphere was great for everyone, including families, and they won!

  • Amazing Venue

by Vittorio on 2011-06-02Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Watching Football (Soccer) at Empire Field is an amazing experience. You have the North Shore Mountains as a backdrop, and in your foreground you have an intimate football experience. So close to the players, that you can actually hear them. And the fans are FANtastic... chanting, cheering, clapping, and screaming...! Make sure you enjoy this venue before Football goes to BC Place...!

Good game, the Caps were outplayed for most of the game but they got the daw. A great venue for Soccer!

  • by Anonymous on 2011-05-30Empire Field - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

Loved the game....disappointed with the seats. Arrived at the game only to find out that our Price Level 1 Seats were behind a pole with obscured viewing of half of the field. (seat 103/104). I would have assumed that the price would have been lowered for seats several rows behind the pole or at least that we would have been aware of what we were buying. It seems unfair that we paid the same price as someone a couple of rows forward with fully obstructed views. Luckily we were able to move 1 seat to the left for better viewing. Would love to attend another game but would be very careful paying full price for tickets.

  • Vancouver Whtecaps vs New York Bulls

Good game, good entertainment but very bad seat and very bad view

  • No Thierry!!!! :0(

by Welovesoccer on 2011-05-30Empire Field - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

The game was great to watch and the ambiance is much better than at the other stadium. We were VERY disappointed that Thierry Henry didn't play! :0(

  • by Anonymous on 2011-05-30Empire Field - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

No Henry and Marquez. That was disappointing. If whitecaps s playing on grass field, I am sure the star players will come more often. Whitecaps used to play on grass field at Swangard and now playing on plastic is a step backward. I can understand other cities in Canada may have trouble maintaining grass field, but Vanouver?????? We have the best weather in the country and still plastic field??

  • by Bashar on 2011-05-30Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Bought the highest ones ($55 plus HST). The row was BB seat 114 and 115. The seating was good, not great as I expected to be exactly in the middle, but we were closer to the corner. but the biggest disappointment was for a huge steel column that obstructed the view whenever the ball went to the opposite court. My son was disappointed that he couldn't see what was going on and I had to stand up and lean behind the column every time to tell him what was happening. All in all, a very nice experience, but try to take tickets from A-W as these are in front of the column. BUT, our day was a sunny day, so when rainy, rows A to maybe n or so would be uncovered, and would be really wet, THEN, I would prefer the column :) One final thing, come early before the game, a huge parking issue that takes lots and lots of time to find a spot. We ended up paying $20 for the WhiteCaps parking as we spent 15 minutes waiting in the lane for free/cheaper parking but not moving, so I decided to go to the $20 one as the game was starting.

  • Whitecaps change time at fan's discomfort

by Anonymous on 2011-05-30Empire Field - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

The Whitecap management changed the time for the RedBulls game, obviously second guessing the timing of the hockey games. The Barcelona/Man U game was on immediately before. I had bought 8 tickets for about $500 and my friends were able to come about 1/3 of the way through. I don't think that the Whitecap management should play around like this.
