Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

What a game what a show!

by Qtpie on 2009-07-28Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

Well the 40 minutes of game time that we did get to see was very good! Wish we could have stayed for the rest, but the lightning and thunder show stalled the game, and by 9pm the game was still not on, and so we had to go. But I would do this again - and hopefully we will have an entire game to watch! Go whitecaps GO!!!!

    Whitecap Disappointment

by Jayyy on 2009-07-27Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

The game, and amenities were very good but the game was 'storm' delayed. That was not the problem, the very poor communication by the whitecaps to fans was very noticable. They needed to provide regular updates. As a result we waited an hour and then took our crying boy home due to the very poor whitecap communication. A gift certificate should be offered to ticket holders.

by bunracer on 2009-07-27Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

Whose idea was it to have the concessions closed during the two plus hour postponement of the game due to Thunder and Lightning? You could have made a fortune and we could have had something to at least eat or drink to bide the time. Bad plan!

    the game that wasn't...

    by 2415 on 2009-07-26Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

For our first time at a white caps game it was strange to see the game stop 2 minutes before the end of the first half. We knew that the stormy weather was contributing, but after another two hours of watching people in suits lingering by the microphones without making a single announcement of what was going on and whether or not the game was going to continue we decided to cut our losses and leave. Imagine our surprise when we saw that the game resumed about 15 minutes after we left. I was really disappointed. I surprised my boyfriend with the tickets to the game for his birthday and felt that it completely backfired on me. I would like to go to another game in the future because I felt that the fans added a lot of energy to the game, but I think I will wait for the taste of disappointment to leave me. If nothing else it was one for the books- a night we'll never forget, but for all the wrong reasons.

    Whitecaps in July!!!

by Candyman on 2009-07-26Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

My first time at Swangard to see the Whitecaps and I've lived here for 25 years. My oldest son was visiting with his son, my grandson and they just thought the game was great. They wanted to see the team that beat their Toronto F.C. Great night out and I will do it again.

    whitecap experience

by oracle on 2009-07-26Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

Well it started off ok.... waited at the Will Call window to pick our tickets..... suppose to be open at 630pm but much closer to 7pm. Then the gates were suppose to be open at 7pm but it was closer to 715pm. The delay??? They didn't have the Will Call booth set up. I would expect that would have been done prior as they are aware they need the booth. Minor inconvenience. Our seats were good (no real bad seats) but they are plain hard wood... again you would think they could spend some money and either pad them or provide returnable seat pads. The game was entertaining but there was a lightning storm that ended the game at the 43minute mark..... While they kept announcing they would attempt to play the rest of the game the stadium employees were cleaning and closing all the stations. Ok so the employees know you are not going to play any more. Why not tell the fans? Hoping to get away with not refunding the money for the game? Whatever dont expect a refund but at least be honest and get everyone out of there at a reasonable time instead of letting everyone believe the game will continue. Over all my daughter and I had a good time. Not because of the venue but the game was good (what was played) and my daughter rocks!

    Exciting Soccer

by SammiBoy on 2009-07-24Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

We were expecting to see the males play soccer. We were shocked to see it was the girls. A truly awesome experience. We would definitely buy tickets to see women soccer again.

by MickeyDee on 2009-07-24Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

No where in the ticketmaster advertising did we see where this was women's soccer. We left after the first five minutes.

    Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Montreal Impact

by SweetAmbrosia on 2009-07-17Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

The game was very enjoyable and the facilities were excellent. No complaints at all except that the lineup for mini-donuts was too long so we didn't get any

by schmade on 2009-07-16Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

this game was crappy because i was cheering for the sure winner - i mean, FC toronto meets university guys who aren't even pro - and they still lost. sad. it was fun though and the crowd was into it.

    Vancouver whitecaps vs Miami Blues

    by d14linda on 2009-07-14Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

I took my 13 year old and her friends to the game as they are all soccer fans. The "family pack" pricing is the way to go. We sat in the front row, so there was lots besides the soccer to entertain when needed. The team mascot kept all the kids busy up front. The game was good, lots of scoring. There were unfortunately, also several fights between players which I had never really seen before. That was disappointing to watch, but certainly gave us lots of entertainment! One of the best parts, was after the game most of the players came out and autographed t-shirts and posters etc. That was nice!

    The whitecaps mascot Rules!!

by Nono on 2009-07-14Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

It was my first Whitecaps Game and it was a good time. The crowd was well into it as were the players. There was no lack of motivation, there were yellow and red cards handed out left and right. It is fun to have the opportunity to watch (semi) professional sports right in your backyard.

    Whitecaps entertained

by Linc on 2009-07-14Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

The June 2 game rated very well. The action was fast and there was plenty of team passing. The crowd was happy.

    Swangard stadium Sucks!!!!!!

by bcbob on 2009-07-13Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

I really didn't enjoy the event. the concession was over crowed and not set up to deal with the crowd size. I mean come on one beer stand, and one ATM for the whole stadium? To make matter's worse there was a priority line for BMO customers. I think we all paid the same amount for a ticket. The actual seats are brutal, cloth back seats for 40 bucks come on. The guy behind me figured it was his privilege to have his knees in my back all night, and when i tried to adjust my position he gave me lip because his knees were in my back. Beautiful setting but the actual stadium certainly not suited for any professional sport.

    Caps v. TFC

by deedale on 2009-07-13Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

Great game. The interleague Canadian Championship series is makes the Whitecaps/TFC matches worth something and, therefore, much more interesting than simple friendly matches. In addition, the soccer is high quality and entertaining.
