Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

The Sounders Cheering group were great. I look forward when we have fans that are as loud and proud and I can't wait for away trips down to Seattle. Make sure any new statium has no running track between fans and field!

Best place to see an professional soccer game! Can be close to the action and still see the entire field.

Exciting game with some impressive goals!! Great atmosphere at the stadium! Too bad Montreal scored late. Impressive 2nd half. Poor effort in the 1st with a lot of confusion on defense and no flow to the attack!

  • awesome atmosphere at swanguard

  • Caps vs Impact Oct.10

by mikeyb on 2009-10-11Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 5 out of 5

What a second half !!! Great game overall on a beautiful night on a REAL grass field. ( Turf SUCKS!!!!) Questionable reffing, especially the red to Nash and the Impact's second goal. I was on the side where the assistant ref made the non call on the offside. He was out of position and the Impact player was at least a couple of steps off. C'est la vie!!! Good luck Caps next week !!!

  • Whitecaps Final

    by Wild1 on 2009-10-11Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

Really an entertaining event to be part of ! The Whitecaps defensive unit has to pick up their game. Love the flow of soccer...different skill levels are still interesting to watch for us.

  • Refering decides final

by Wildthang on 2009-10-11Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

The referee wanted to be the first star. The ref should be invisible, if he/she is doing a good job. This ref made a mockery of the game. The players had no base line. Many calls were missed both ways. This ref decided the outcome of the final, taking it away from the players. In conclusion. THE REFEREEING SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whitecaps Rock!

  • Cool Caps

by TheBigTrip on 2009-09-20Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

When we entered the stadium we were surprised to see how buzzing it was. A great pre-game party atmosphere with live music, BBQ and beer tents. It was a good football match and we liked the freebies which included a comfy whitecaps pad for our seats. The crowd needed a bit of encouragement, but with our football lungs at hand, everyone got going with the cheers. Really liked Swanguard stadium. Hope the Whitecaps stay at an open roof stadium in future.

  • Whitecap vs Aztex

by SoccerFanSS on 2009-09-15Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 5 out of 5

Was a great game with the Whitecaps dominating the Aztec's in the first half but both teams scoreless. Austin score right at the start of the second half. Whitecaps cam back with two goals close together, 1st one with a heading combo, second a fast hard power shot. Very exciting game, great foot and head work from both teams!!

  • Whitecaps Birthday

by Birthday on 2009-08-31Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

The game was really good. My sister and I took my dad to a game for his 60th birthday present. We hadn't been to a Whitecaps game before and it was very enjoyable.

  • Good but small venue

by Cherrykristen on 2009-08-30Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 3 out of 5

The game was awesome and I never understood before why the Whitecaps wanted a better stadium... now I see why! The place is tiny. I've lived in the Lower Mainland for my whole life and never knew where it was located. I've been down Boundary and Kingsway a number of times and I had never seen the stadium, meaning the place is so small that you can't see it unless you're looking for it. The staff were wonderful, treating the entire game and concession as though it were some big hot-shot thing! And the game was awesome! Good price for seating too. I saw some kids sitting outside the fence of the stadium, watching the game for free. That was fine, but a good indicator that a bigger stadium is needed, if people are able to sit on the outside and see the whole thing.

  • The Whitecaps Rock

by Tice on 2009-08-30Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

The Whitecaps played a good game and Winger kept the croud involved.

  • Great Game

by AAAU on 2009-08-28Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

The Whitecaps Vs Miami game was great. The Whitecaps dominated the game and were finally able to score twice near the end. Winning just made the game even better for the spectators. Winger (the mascot) was especially memorable.

  • Daughter fell in love

by Kaciali on 2009-08-27Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 5 out of 5

I took my daughter to her first Whitecaps game and she loved it...She is 8 years old and fell in love with one of the players (#4) and had her picture taken with him...Every other player was asked to get him and he came out of the changeroom and took the picture and went right back...What an awesome group of guys...It was a bonus that the weather was fantastic and Vancouver won...She tells everyone about it and can't wait to go back...

  • Gbeke

by sappermorgan on 2009-08-25Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 4 out of 5

Two fantastic goals by Gbeke. Wow.... what a header! Great goal line kick by one of the defenders.

  • Wonderful Whitecaps

by Turtleman on 2009-08-25Swangard Stadium - BurnabyRating: 5 out of 5

This was my son's first soccer match (he is almost 2 years old), and what a great day it was. I don't think there would be a bad seat in the house, even our seats were supposed to have a possibility of obstructed view and we had no problems. The memorabilia and refreshments weren't overpriced like some venues. All in all I would recommend this event to everyone, including families.
