Vancouver Whitecaps FC History
The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974 as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).
Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

Whitecaps inaugural game... the energy was crazy and the weather held out. It was just a super fun day!!!
We sat in the yellow section. When the whitecaps scored the first goal the stadium went wild. An amazing event.
This was probably one of the great sporting events that I've watched. Empire Field is a great venue for the Whitecaps. On opening day we had snow capped mountains, sunshine, a loud noisy spontaneous crowd, and a wave of white. When the 'Caps scored the first goal, the place went nuts. Each goal after that was followed with massive cheering that never stopped.
it was one of the greates experiance of my life.I have always been a soccer fan since seeing 98 world and since have seen every world cup and european competetion.so it was obivious that i will go to vancouver whitecaps inagural match. It was electric affair as fan were great and were chanting all the time.I have always believed that soccer fan are best and this match proves it.Whitecaps were great and the players played very well and exposed the jinxe in torotnto defence.I think whitecaps are playing great and can be real contender for cup in near future.
It was BRILLIANT! The game, the result, the atmosphere and the ponchos!
I think that the soccer game was very good in term of skills and entertainment and the players perform very well and to be the first game I believe that we can go far. One thing though, they have to finish the stadium asap because that was the only disappointment that I had. the facility was very poor and confuse. Other than that I think I'll give them a 4 stars.
The Whitecaps MLS opener was possibly the best live sporting event I have ever attended. The atmosphere at Empire Field was amazing and the quality of soccer was high. I'll definitely be attending many more Whitecaps games.
Good game...poor play by TFC...public transportation options were limited and the buses could not handle the number of fans going to the game.
I am not a huge soccer fan by any means but, knowing that the MLS is a pretty solid league with some great talent, i wanted to see a game. I had been to a Seattle Sounders game a couple years back and thought they did a great job with it. They had a "March to the Match" from pioneer square down to the stadium with a Marching Band leading the way. All their fans were decked out in that ugly neon green color their team chooses to wear. (sorry but, it's an awful color), and they had their own chants and drum band keeping the crowd in it all game so, needless to say, i was impressed with their product. With that said, The Whitecaps organization did a great job in their first game of the season. I sat in the 2nd row by the north side net. The drum band was at the top of the bleachers in our section doing a great job of getting the crowd into it. The 4 goals scored by Vancouver didn't hurt either. The only downside at Old Empire Field is the beer line-ups and the amount of room to walk around the stadium. You could miss upto 20minutes of the game standing in line. All-in-All, i do recommend seeing a game. It's nothing like going to a hockey game or a football game in Vancouver....totally different atmosphere that you must check out.
this was my first professional game and it took my breath away in so many ways.I enjoyed the athleticism, energy and skills demonstrated by the players..Rest assured that I will be back for more.
Probably the best sporting event I've ever been to in BC. Crowd was awesome and the stadium was unbelievable! I went to Empire for a Lions game and it doesn't even compare to the Whitecaps. Can't believe it took this long for the MLS to give us a team. Totally regret not getting season tickets.
Loved the first game of the official season. Bought the tickets last minute and sat in the end zone off to the side. The seats, to my surprise, were great and the fans in that area made me laugh. Enjoyed the little cameo by Steve Nash! The weather was beautiful and staff was helpful in directing us to our area. Definitely am already looking into getting tickets for their next game. I highly recommend a soccer game to anyone who has never experienced one before. Great sport, great entertainment for a reasonable price.
Had a great time, my kids loved it. going to go to another game
I was moderately excited to going to the first MLS game in Vancouver. I like soccer, I don't love soccer. Now that it's come and gone, I am glad I went. I am stoked I was part of Vancouver sports history, and I enjoyed every second of the game. I had seats in the last row on the south side, and they were awesome. The crowd was exciting to watch and be a part of, and they game had a good pace, and was fun to watch. I recommend this to anyone who loves soccer, or would love to experience something new. The tickets were inexpensive, and the crowd had a great warm sense of community to it. I will be going to more games.
Their MLS debut was spectacular and EMPIRE FIELD was a masterpiece. It's kinda sad that it or the team won't be sticking around that venue forever because it was so amazing. The Caps and Empire did not disappoint.
i don't like soccer but these had to be one of the top 5 sporting events i have ever attented
Fabulous game..great atmosphere. Long overdue for Vancouver to have MLS.
What a wonderful start to MLS in Vancouver. Electric atmosphere, great performance on the pitch. Wish I had season tickets.
Felt priveledged to be there for history to be made on Saturday. The Whitecaps played amazingly and it showed on the score board. Couldn't believe the atmosphere...it was over whelming....loved every second of it! Let's keep it up Whitecaps fans!!
Great crowd and atmosphere. Very "English" feel to it. Crowd were emotional and created their own excitement and atmosphere compared to the fake crowd builders at Hockey and Football and basketball that I find in North America. It was a great day out, an exciting attacking game and brilliant field to host it. Great to have decent sport back in Vancouver.
