WARPAINT IN CONCERT:

All-girl psych-rockers Warpaint first entranced fans with their arty, eclectic brand of indie in 2004, and they've kept things fresh by adding new flourishes to their sound each step of the way. The group takes listeners on a journey in concert with their broad sonic palette, mixing it up with the searing dance floor groove of "Disco//Very," the hypnotic guitar arpeggios of "Keep It Healthy," and the psychedelic pop of "New Song." Their beautifully layered sound is thick with spacey echoes and swirling textures, and they cut through the mix with gang-sung melodies and irresistible rallying cries that match the propulsive beats. Warpaint deliver the perfect blend of genre-straddling experimentation and endearing stage presence, and ticket buyers can't help but get swept up in the group's immersive sets.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Many were celebrating romance on Valentine's Day in 2004, but the four founding members of Warpaint spent the day jamming instead. After years of gigging in LA, they released their 2008 debut EP Exquisite Corpse, which was mixed and mastered with help from Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. Original drummer Shannyn Sossamon left shortly thereafter to focus on her acting career, which had already netted her roles in the films A Knight's Tale and 40 Days and 40 Nights, and former Swahili Blonde drummer Stella Wozgawa slid behind the kit just in time for the band's 2009 tour with The xx. Warpaint released their full-length debut The Fool in late 2010 and continued to grow their fanbase the following year with well-received sets at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Glastonbury. The solidified lineup spent the next few years composing new material, and in 2014 they returned with a self-titled album that exhibited a new minimalist approach highlighted by keyboards and drum machines. After some time spent focusing on side projects, the group thrilled fans in 2016 with the announcement of their third album Heads Up, which they supported with the bubbly advance single "New Song." With critics and fans eager for more genre-bending music from the quartet, Warpaint continue to floor indie rockers with their energetic and unforgettable concerts.

Love was in the air this night my friends, great vibe! First time I've seen them live. The band apparently spent a year in Vancouver (Deep Cove) in the early days, which I never knew before.. they were having fun, looked like someone playing in front of a bunch of their friends.. which I think was partly true :) They have a great sound, play super tight, new music is awesome.. these guys are even better live.. GO. SEE. THEM!!! đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ˜Š Hope they head up to Vancouver again soon! Cheers!

The mezzanine allowed me to enjoy Warpaint!

by Muldfeld on 2016-10-28The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Normally, at Danforth Music Hall, I buy a ticket for the general admission standing area; you're closer to the band, even though taller people may block your view with their arms and cellphones, which is annoying enough. The main problem is that people talk during songs; this is unacceptable behavior, but it's a constant problem wherever you have younger people and/or people who are not hardcore fans and treat the environment like it's a party -- that music is background to their hanging out. It's why I rarely go to concerts anymore. A live performance is a unique experience, when a band will perform their music in a totally unique way then ever before or after -- due to both the slight unintentional changes in timing and sound and the conscious decision of the band to not mimic what was recorded on the official studio album release. That's the whole point of going to see a band live -- that it sounds different and not exactly the same as the album you can play endless times to decipher all those gorgeous moments. You only get to hear a given live performance once, so you should make the most of it and LISTEN. Unfortunately, many don't appreciate this and treat a live performance as just as inconsequential as playing the album; if they miss something they can go back and listen to it again. The people on the general admission standing area, on the floor, had this attitude and I could slightly hear them chatting away, insufficiently attentive to the music and to each other's right to hear the music in all its subtleties. Thankfully, everyone in the mezzanine was like me and behaved. We were all in rapt attention, quiet during the songs -- not only so we could hear for ourselves, but so others could hear. The spirit of true fans listening to live music in peace and harmony held true, and I couldn't have been happier. One annoying fan next to me kept taking out his cellphone to look at or type something and he should have covered it better, and I'll speak up next time. Otherwise, this was the greatest live concert I've enjoyed in nearly a decade, since I saw Echo and the Bunnymen and The Beautiful South with 40-somethings at Phoenix Concert Theatre.

    Finally saw them live....

by Solstice21 on 2014-03-28The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Their sound is ethereal, haunting, melodic, disturbing, honestly raw. These band is comprised of 4 amazing, very talented Ladies who are very in sync with each other's energy. Their playing overall is very tight but they have the ability to jam out free flow as well. Very vibrant stage performance as well. You can tell they love what they do & that is what true artful music is about. I will see them again. (The only Nay to the show was they only played 1 hour. )
