About

Since premiering at Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre in 2003, WICKED has been mesmerizing audiences and breaking records, becoming the second highest-grossing musical in Broadway history with over $1.4 billion in tickets sold. Composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman’s magical “untold true story of the Witches of Oz” has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards — winning three — including Idina Menzel for Best Actress in a Musical as heroine Elphaba. With a captivating score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity” and “For Good,” the WICKED cast album won Best Musical Show Album at the 47th Grammy Awards, with Time magazine cheering, “If every musical had a brain, a heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” In addition to Menzel, the star-studded original cast included Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Joel Grey as the Wizard, Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond. WICKED is also the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.

Everything was fantastic. The only thing I wish was that I could see it again! Set was flawlessly transitioned and very smooth, so there were no disruptions in the flow of the story. Music and performances were top notch.

I am no expert on broadway shows, I have only seen about 15 of them. But Wicked was by far my favorite! The sets and costumes alone are reason to see this show. And the music is unforgettable. The show is a must see!

    Bad, really bad!

by Soulshock on 2011-05-06Gershwin Theatre - New York

I was so excited to go see the "top show on broadway". I mean, the witches of the Wizard of Oz? Sounded to interesting to me. I am sorry to say it was the opposite of what I was expecting. The production is really good, and the talent is there, but the show is extremely, excruciating painfully boring (especially the first act), the story and theme of the songs are ludicrous. We almost walked out, but didn't because we paid lots of money for the best seats. Be sure to know it's a teenage story about the good and bad witches growing up in a school - full of cliches. I got nothing out of this musical. Skip this and go see Priscilla, which I saw for half of the price and was so much fun.

    Wicked was way beyond expectations!

by KDGC on 2011-04-03Gershwin Theatre - New York

My daughter and I went to NYC for the first time and were blown away by all the shows we saw. Neither of us knew the story of Wicked but were familiar with a couple of songs thanks to Glee. Needless to say we were on the edge of our seats throughout the show pulled in by the amazing acting, creative sets and costumes, and no words can describe the talented voices that brought goose bumps which lasted until the end! When the last note was over we were on our feet cheering and clapping as loud as we could and wanted more! After the show my daughter had to have the green defying gravity t-shirt so of course we bought it. One of the main reasons was the organic cottton. Way to be thoughtful and progressive in your thinking!

Truly the Musical of the Decade

by thumpers on 2011-03-07Gershwin Theatre - New York

This show is worth every penny paid. Not only are the sets stunning, and special effects memorable, the cast is outstanding. Teal Wicks as Elphaba is amazing. Her performance is worth the money alone. Very professional, very talented and stunning. If you are in New York, you have to see Wicked.

    Wicked almost!

by yspy on 2011-02-25Gershwin Theatre - New York

Lets begin this with musicals are OK... they are not the first thing I would choose to do. The set was amazing really had me engaged from the start. The acting was good, some very funny moments, well written and performed by all the actors. The story kind of made sense... you must understand the Wizard Of Oz story prior. Was disappointed that they ran it through to the end of the movie as opposed to ending it when the movie began... The singing... well it annoyed me at time due to the fact that some of it really wasn't understandable but hey it was well performed (musically it sounded great). Enjoyed it... but wanted to leave prior to end of first act. Overall the story seemed allegorical to the relationship the US has with the rest of the world... many moments appeared to represent he ideological 'good' direction of the US (particulalry the manipulation by an apparent higher power)... and the 'wicked' direction of the rest of the world or 'other' and it ending with the destruction of the other +(not revealing the end). Over all... fun to watch... go see it... no one else seems disappointed to have seen it. Everyone else loved it.

    Thoroughly enjoyed Wicked

by calypso16 on 2011-02-08Gershwin Theatre - New York

My group of five attended Wicked last Saturday evening. Five adults, one teen of 13...We all enjoyed the performance... The strongest points were probably the relationship between the two lead characters, the acting of these two (they created two very strong, distinct characters)....and their singing voices. The story was a little hollow in my opinion. The conflict was based on defending the rights of a prejudiced group (talking animals) and the consequences of standing up for such. The actress playing Glinda had wonderful comic timing and instincts.. Very original and a break from the classic song and dance shows of Broadway.
