Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes). In the 12 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made six playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

    Too Loud!!!

by Buffie on 2011-10-03MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The hockey was fine. The cheering was wonderful. The pre-game and between-period "music " was ear-splitting and enough to deter me from purchasing season tickets when my number comes up. Please turn down the volume! Thank you.

    The Jets are an Event!!

by mbprairieflower on 2011-10-03MTS Centre - Winnipeg

During the game I wondered why hockey was pulling sooo many people but as I asked around, everyone had either watched a child in hockey, had played hockey... so this became a community event like it is for Brandon .. if you want to know where everyone was on a Friday or Sunday, just go to the Keystone. The double wave was amazing and there were not truly 'drunk' people but can see where that may become an issue. However, my 80 year old monther and I truly enjoyed the event even though we were sitting in the nose bleed section. We may not have a 'big' team but we do have a scrappy one and they held their own with Nashville.

by TheWren on 2011-10-02MTS Centre - Winnipeg

even though this was pre-season hockey the crowd was insane!!! Incredible goalie jeering...almost felt sorry for Boucher. Evander Kane was playing some great hockey in there looking forward to seeing him through the year. Hats off to Andrew Ladd for rallying to troops!!!!

MTS center facility ruins great event!

by Brandonwilly on 2011-09-25MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Simply put: the MTS center is not built to handle a full crowd- It's concourse is uncomfortably jam-packed. How does it meet public safety standards? One suggestion- put in a dividing line -inner circle goes clockwise and outer circle counterclockwise - with specific crossing areas. The hockey games are hundreds of dollars per person all inclusive and pushing through a sea of people for 15 minutes to get a snack or visit the washroom (you have to choose one per period break) is ridiculous.

by JohnL on 2011-09-22MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The game and atmosphere was everything that was anticipated. The fans were, excited, enthusiastic and ecstatic to have NHL hockey and the JETS back in Winnipeg at our great facility, the MTS Centre. Thank you True North Sports Entertainment for making this possible. It will take a lot to beat this feeling of Pride and satisfaction.

    First Jets home exhibition game

by WpgJetsDan on 2011-09-22MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Unforgettable experience. An absolute privilege to have been in attendance, the building was rockin' all night long. Tickets for the Jets will be hard to come by, so if you can snag a pair or even a single, don't just think about it, do it. Go Jets go!
