We wanted to attend something fun, not a funeral. You could not hear the voices, the music was so loud. What a waste of money!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 WSO Mahler- excellent
by elcie on 2012-06-16Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegI thoroughly enjoyed the WSO Mahler performance. It met all my expectations and was one of the most enjoyable WSO performances. Alexander Mickelthwate is an excellent conductor and always seems to bring out the best in the musicians.

Rating: 1 out of 5 lose the high school amateur hour band!
by Stoneham on 2011-11-28Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegWe were very disappointed in the SJR high school "rock band" that was a part of this concert. The premise of the concert was good, namely that rock music has been greatly influenced by classical music, and this was done in a very interesting "back and forth" style. The WSO was wonderful, but the caliber of the high school rock band was terrible. They were off in their timing, the voices were off key, musically it was miserable.... we PAID to see and hear this? There are many great cover bands in Winnipeg who would have done justice to this concert. The SJR band certainly did not!
Rating: 1 out of 5 Disappointing
by Stoneham on 2011-11-28Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegThe orchestra was great and the MC was also very good. Unfortunately the rock band that was chosen to do the rock bits was completely over their heads. They were off beat and off key particularly the female singers. A decent rock band anywhere in Winnipeg should have been chosen - not a high school band in need of a major overhaul. Only saving grace was the male singer who was decent.

Rating: 5 out of 5 blown Away!
by tidbitz on 2011-03-20Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegI was not very familiar of Rachmaninov or Prokofiev before this evening. But I was greatly suprised at how amazing this symphony was, the guest pianist was mind blowing
Rating: 5 out of 5 The WSO concert was absolutely amazing
by DNAstrider on 2011-03-20Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegWhat sound! Big sound! We heard the full dynamic range of soloist and orchestra, and a range of sound and tonal colours from ultra-refined to appropriately strident. So many voices within the orchestra were heard from, both within the ensemble work and in solo passages, with clarity when necessary and perfectly blended when it suited the music. It was especially nice to hear from Concertmaster Gwen Hoebig in a very beautifully played solo. As a saxophone player, I must say that the presence of a masterfully-played sax during the evening was also a rare and special treat. Orli Shaham was absolutely magnificent on piano, playing with incredible focus and precision and bringing to mind many of the larger-than-life musicians both living and dead. Nigel Kennedy comes to mind, as do Liszt and Paganini, among others. Ms. Shaham brought the entire - and I must emphasize the "entire" - dynamic and emotional range from the piano. Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances was a mature piece that also showed off the maturity of the orchestra and it's ability to deal with the musical and emotional complexity of the music. I got the impression that the musicians of the orchestra enjoyed playing this piece. I was not familiar with the Lieutenant Kijé Symphonic Suite by Prokofiev before the concert. My impression was that this piece would be a very difficult one to pull together, being assembled from a large variety of disparate parts with little connecting thematic material other than the off-stage trumpet theme played at intervals throughout the suite. Conductor Alexander Micklethwate brought out the charm and humour of this piece in what I imagine was very close to what the composer had in mind in the first place. It worked very well. We are lucky to have an orchestra as musical and accomplished as the WSO in Winnipeg. The only slight sour point in the evening was the presence of empty seats in the hall. For a performance such as this people should have been lined up waiting for an opportunity to get in.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Evelyn Glennie Impresses Sold Out Audience.
by RACHAEL on 2011-03-06Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegIt sure didn't take very long for Evelyn Glennie to warm up a capacity audience on a very cold night in Winnipeg. Not only is she a superb percussionist, she is hearind impaired which demonstrates how truly amazing she really is.Her command of silence towards the end of her show was a golden moment.
Rating: 5 out of 5by cavern06 on 2010-05-10Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg an amazing show - vocals, orchestra, atmosphere, performance - great experience to hear again the best songs that have been ever written in the world!!!
Rating: 4 out of 5by Habs25 on 2010-05-09Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg The show was very good, except one thing....the person working the sound was poor, especislly after have the night before to work out the sound. The sound was choppy at the begining and it hurt the performance to start, but the overall experience was fantastic. To listen to those songs with the accompaniment of a great ochestra was incredible. Some of the songs gave me goosebumps.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Classical Mystery Tour a Real Treat!
by RonMar on 2010-05-09Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegThe concert was a wonderful trip down memory lane. The Winnipeg Symphony added just the right touch of musical texture to an all around pleasant evening. The members of the orchestra seemed to enjoy the concert as much as we did. It was great to see the conductor show all sides of his musical talents in no-holds-barred dance-a-thon! Chapeau to the band and to the orchestra. We're still smiling today!
Rating: 5 out of 5 Almost the real thing!
by Abbeyroadgirl on 2010-05-09Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegLoved it!!! Great show!! The musicians had the Beatles' mannerisms down to a T. The symphony was great as well. So nice to hear the songs with the live orchestra. I would definitely recommend this show to any Beatles' fan or music fan. I would love to see it again!!!!
Rating: 4 out of 5 WSO POPS: Classical Mystery Tour
by Better on 2010-05-08Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegGreat show. Close yours and you might forget the group was not really The Beatles. Well performed and the WSO work was fantastic, bringing these songs to life.
Rating: 5 out of 5 I Couldn't Believe how Spectacular the Show was
by camero7 on 2010-05-08Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegThe opening movement, performed by the orchestra only, was really good. Then when the "Beatles" came on stage, I thought "Wow, This IS them." I was surprised at how well the orchestra and the band sounded together. And the humour and showmanship of all was appreciated. If you missed this show, too bad. If you have the opportunity to see them, buy tickets and go. It is totally worth it.
