About

Cat Stevens rose to fame in the swinging '60s with chart-topping pop hits such as "Matthew and Son" and "The First Cut Is the Deepest." His early career was interrupted by a near-fatal battle with tuberculosis - a turning point that ignited his quest for peace and understanding. Emerging from this experience, he rapidly rose to become one of the most prolific singer/songwriter icons of the '70s, captivating the world with soul-stirring anthems such as "Wild World," "Father and Son," "Peace Train," and "Morning Has Broken." His classic albums Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat have earned him a rightful place in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Following another dangerous encounter with fate and a near-drowning experience in 1975, Cat's life took a spiritual turn as he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. Leaving the music industry behind, Yusuf dedicated his life to God, family, and humanitarian work, for which he received numerous prestigious international honors, including the World Award for "humanitarian relief work helping children and victims of war" and the Man of Peace Award, voted for by The Nobel Peace Laureates.

The latest chapter is Yusuf's return to music, through which he has re-joined his past and present lives. Now known as Yusuf/Cat Stevens - a name that represents the synergy between the two key periods of his existence - his inspirational story is one of quest, survival, and redemption. With more than 100 million records sold and billions of streams, his soulful voice and poetic lyrics continue to inspire, now intertwined with a life of activism and altruism. As a campaigner for faith education, ecological consciousness, and humanitarian work, Yusuf has become a global advocate for peace and coexistence.

  • Great but too many obscure songs

I enjoyed the show a lot but would have preferred that he played less obscure songs and more hits.

Cat Stevens was wonderful! What a storyteller! So nice to hear the background behind his songs. He plays a wealth of songs and is amazing on the guitar! Going to a Cat Stevens Concert-- Priceless!

  • The Cat was definitely in The Hat..Top Hat that is

Cat Stevens was transparent, effervescent, down to earth, realistic and just plain fun. He took us through his magical career complete with Beatles and West Side story tunes. His fellow band mates were amazing. He played all of his well known and lesser known hits. He truly was a delight to watch....if he's back so will I. Great show, amazing artist.

Legendary man and music! What a privilege to experience it live. Loved that Yusuf spoke to us, told his story in conversation and in music. He is an inspiration! Would liked to hear him really speak out about Syrian Refugees and other peace initiatives, but based on the security surrounding this entire event I respect his cautiousness.

  • Great concert

by SpeedieDee on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Interesting concept with Yusuf telling the story of his career. All the top songs were played in a stripped down format, primarily acoustic with two backup musicians that sounded great in the Sony Centre.

  • A Cat's Attic - kick off show in Toronto

by Checkers532 on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

A celebration of his 50 years in the industry! This intimate concert was a winner from start to finish. The set was beautiful almost theatrical; a moonlit view of London, as the curtain went up it became a cutaway of an attic hideaway, giving the audience a seat in his attic flat where a great deal of his music was shaped and created. Inside the set there was a comfy chair, record player, albums, and a lamp. The set even had a smoking chimney. To one side, Guitarist Eric Appapoulay (filling in for Alun Davis) and multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yaboah, appearing as if they were outside the apartment in the street playing under a lamp post. He played more than 30 songs from his catalogue over two sets with a short intermission, starting with “Where Do the Children Play?” from Tea for the Tillerman, his storytelling was gentle and magical, filled with humor, fun tidbits and facts. He finished his show with "Wild World" and for his encore: "Moonshadow", "You Are My Sunshine" and "Oh Very Young". An amazing evening, an amazing talent!

  • Yusuf's voice is as strong as it was 50 years ago!

  • The Cat hits a HOME RUN...

by GrandFromage on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a most incredible walk through time with one of the most amazing songwriters of our time. A journey from West End London to the decadence of L.A. to the renewal and gift of finding a Faith, to his return to a more middle ground...Yusuf the Cat sang us all through the years without missing a beat. Wonderful small band, great staging, fabulous setlist, killer version of many big hits and also some rarities...this show was for the 'real' Cat Stevens fan. Thank you Cat...you are back !!!

  • Top Cat

Seeing Cat Stevens/Yusuf again was on my bucket list I saw him the first time 43 years ago at Massey hall. His voice is as wonderful as all those years ago. My excitement level was the same as all of those years ago. It was a wonderful performance and I was taken back over the years with every song. The set was great and made me want to visit London again. His band players were excellent. In all a great night that only went too fast!

  • Cat Stevens was great

by YYZYVR on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The Cat Stevens concert was great. I saw him perform in either 1970 or 1961 and I enjoyed both of his concerts. His voice sounds the same as I remember hearing him live as well as on his albums. Eight tracks or cassette in those days. I enjoyed his style of concert by telling us a story. It was a great concert held in a great venue.

  • Yusuf Islam delivers an unforgettable night!

by tlintoronto on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts I've ever attended - hand down! Yusuf Islam bring to live songs from his repertoire and days as Cat Stevens and weaves them through an intimate evening of storytelling, song, poetry, humility and laughter. He's immensely personable and his voice.....is as beautiful as it always was. I took my husband as a complete surprise for his early 60th birthday gift and he was as moved as I was. We enjoyed the show so much we're contemplating flying to another city to catch it again. Just magical.

This show was everything and more than I expected. I went with two of my siblings. We all loved Cat's music growing up. We never thought we would have the opportunity to see him perform. His music is as relevant today as yesterday. So intimate and personal...an absolutely magical evening!

  • Cat Stevens delivers

by tiggertoronto on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Cat Stevens delivered a 34 song 2 set mostly acoustic show, which covers all his major hits, along with the complete story of his career. He sounded fantastic.

  • Cat Stevens was magical

by nbbb on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

His classic songs were perfect..so glad I got to enjoy his songs live. Having to wait more than an hour in line to get in because of the way tickets were done, and the need to swipe my credit card, probably won't buy a ticket to a venue again if this is how they are handled.

  • Cat Stevens was the experience of a lifetime!

by Bridget1234 on 2016-09-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was incredible! He sang, told the story of his life and engaged the audience for over 2 1/2 hours. I will go to his shows whenever he's in town!

  • Finally !!!

What an amazing performer !!! Cat sounded the same after a 38 year absence from the Toronto music scene!! He related very well to his adoring fans of many years!!! It was wonderful to hear the amazing songs that he had written and he sang them beautifully !!! It was worth the 1 1/2 hour wait in the freezing cold temperatures to relive some of our youth!!!
