About

Cat Stevens rose to fame in the swinging '60s with chart-topping pop hits such as "Matthew and Son" and "The First Cut Is the Deepest." His early career was interrupted by a near-fatal battle with tuberculosis - a turning point that ignited his quest for peace and understanding. Emerging from this experience, he rapidly rose to become one of the most prolific singer/songwriter icons of the '70s, captivating the world with soul-stirring anthems such as "Wild World," "Father and Son," "Peace Train," and "Morning Has Broken." His classic albums Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat have earned him a rightful place in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Following another dangerous encounter with fate and a near-drowning experience in 1975, Cat's life took a spiritual turn as he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. Leaving the music industry behind, Yusuf dedicated his life to God, family, and humanitarian work, for which he received numerous prestigious international honors, including the World Award for "humanitarian relief work helping children and victims of war" and the Man of Peace Award, voted for by The Nobel Peace Laureates.

The latest chapter is Yusuf's return to music, through which he has re-joined his past and present lives. Now known as Yusuf/Cat Stevens - a name that represents the synergy between the two key periods of his existence - his inspirational story is one of quest, survival, and redemption. With more than 100 million records sold and billions of streams, his soulful voice and poetic lyrics continue to inspire, now intertwined with a life of activism and altruism. As a campaigner for faith education, ecological consciousness, and humanitarian work, Yusuf has become a global advocate for peace and coexistence.

  • Cat Stevens' performance was awesome.

by MoiPatH on 2014-12-14Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great venue for Cat Stevens to perform in. The acoustics in Massey Hall were amazing. It was worth every penny for the flight and the tickets. I never thought I would ever be able to get to one of his concerts. It was a memorable life event for my daughter and I to savor for the rest of our lives. The energy and love emanating from the crowd and Cat was a thing of beauty. The band members were also incredible. Well done. Very well done!

  • It was about time!

by Stevo on 2014-12-07Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I had waited many years to have the opportunity to see Cat Stevens live - and it was worth the wait. He sounded as amazing as he did back in the 70's. And what a fantastic venue to see him perform - Massey Hall. I sure hope he returns again, because now I want more. A true legend!

I last saw Cat Stevens in 1976 at Massey Hall. I was just thrilled with the event. Your voice has not changed a bit. Thank you for coming to Toronto and I hope to see you again. Please don't wait another 38 years ok? I loved the article in the Star on Tuesday. You must have an awesome sense of humour! All the best and keep the peace train rolling :)

What an incredible show! Yusuf/ Cat Stevens was simply amazing. His voice sounded like he was back in the seventies. His band was great. The drummer, bassist, keyboardist and guitarists were excellent. Yusuf/ Cat Stevens last appeared in Toronto 38 years ago. Long time between gigs. It was well worth the wait. This concert was magical and memorable!!!!

  • Yusuf / Cat Stevens: Peace Train... Late Again Tou

    by 2G2BT on 2014-12-05Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert and we were really glad that we went. Wished he played more of his own music since that was what we wanted to hear, but the covers that were selected were extremely well done. We did not appreciate the extra security precautions as it the lines moved extremely slow and many people had waited outside for 2 hours, plus it was very cold and windy. Some members in the audience were a bit roudy (they probably drank too much while waiting for the concert to begin) and as a result, they were a bit annoying; however, overally Cat Stevens and the band were amazing and they lived up to expectations...just wished he played more favourites.

The show was great. Waiting in line for an hour in December in Toronto to get into the show was not so great. Yusuf's voice is still strong and it was wonderful to hear him sing both his old hits and newer songs. The only complaint was that his mic was not loud enough when the band came in.

  • So glad he's back !

One of the best concerts I have been too . He was great! So glad he decided to sing again. Never thought I would have the opportunity to see him. Would definately go see him again.

  • Concert of a lifetime

by Seniorita on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Growing up to listening to Cat Stevens from a young age, I never imagined I would have the opportunity of seeing him live. From the moment he walked out on stage I had shivers and there were many times that the classics brought me to tears just being able to revel in the moment of sharing a room with one of my idols. The combination of his new music and the classics was a great balance and presented a true picture of his talents. The music, energy and humour that he brought to the stage made for a wonderful performance that was also supported by the talents of his band. For myself this was a dream come true and most definitely THE ONE.

  • Almost perfect....

by raunch on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

A brilliant concert from a major league singer/songwriter......From the stage set up (old one room train station).... to the lighting....to the acoustics....to the accompanying musicians....to the set list....to the timber in his voice....this was a terrific evening. Let's hope that he doesn't wait another few decades before he tours again.

  • Cat Stevens was amazing

by fizpop on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Cat stevens was an intimate and amazing show! The way ticketless entry was organised at the facility was appalling. This required people to line up for hours in the cold just to enter the facility and caused the show to start over an hour late! What poor planning! I don't know what ticketmaster and Massey Hall were thinking. This was not a cheap event but purchased tickets. It was not Cat Stevens Late again... he was mesmerizing. The hall was definitely LATE AGAIN!

  • Amazing -- A once-in-a-lifetime concert event

The Yusuf concert was amazing! His incredible voice singing the songs which have lived in my heart for years -- it was magical. His whole persona embodied the message of Peace that he shared in his songs and the audience embraced every moment. A once-in-a-lifetime concert event for me.

  • Cat's back!

Great set in an iconic venue. Yusef wasn't very interactive with the crowd but put forth a great show. Glad to have him back.

  • sounds exactly the same

by cheesyfromage on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Amazing that after 38 years of not touring he sounded exactly the same. Nice to see a show with a theme and set that gave a great ambience and feel to the show. The band was fantastic. Even Alun Davies was there still playing guitar just like back in the day. Only 2 slight criticisms; all the covers and lesser known songs he played were a bit boring, even though they were done well...and the crazy slow security to get in forced a lot of people to arrive early. Once inside you couldn't leave so some who arrived early clearly drank...a lot. Thus there were more than the usual yelling and hooting fans that at times I'd wished would shut up! Also nice that he played all his hits and since his voice sounds exactly the same, the songs were magical. He also had a very humble, happy and thankful attitude which made the whole evening a lot of fun. If you're going, you're going to have a great time...and a great sing-a-long!

  • Cat Stevens/Yusef was Best Show This Year

by VAJP on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

To say I was anticipating this show is an understatement. Unfortunately, too much was made of irrelevant things - paperless tickets, his faith etc. When he came on stage the magic started and it didn't stop the entire show. He played all the big hits we wanted from our youth and then he introduced many others from his career. The show was exceptional no matter which musical decade he played. Cat Stevens is an exceptional musician and human being. And that shone through very brightly on Monday at Massey Hall.

  • by HeavenLea on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I grew up listening to Cat Stevens so when the opportunity came to see him, I knew I would do whatever I had to do to make sure my parents and I went. The security measures while valid were nearly impossible to acquire tickets. Beg, borrow, steal.....doesn't matter I GOT THEM!!!!!! This is thee most memorable evening I have ever spent with my parents and the memories will be cherished beyond this lifetime.

  • Just ok

by Rogersfan on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

I waited 30 years to see Cat Stevens (Yusuf) in concert along with many others in attendance. First there were the long lines and security and then he went on about 40 minutes late (probably due to all of the security measure he forced the venue to put into place). When the show did start it was slow. Cat Stevens energy seemed low, going through the motions, taking advantage of the fact that the crowd was just so pleased to see him live nothing else mattered. With that said it was almost as if he needed time to warm up and he did seem to 'bring' it during the final 2/3's of the show.

  • 38 years for the peace train to arrive

by foodboy on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

i had been waiting 38 years for this show to happen. i was and wasn't disappointed . we were teased by the opening song the wind into thinking there would be an abundance of old material. well there wasn't. the show was a constant up and down somewhat alternating between older and newer material. for myself hearing the gems were priceless, but for the very high ticket prices i expected a lot more of his material from his prime years. although his version of you are my sunshine was well done it was not what i was expecting to hear and other songs like big boss man certainly could have been left out. because of the delay for people getting in the venue due to ticket policy and security issues a true gem sad lisa was omitted from the set list. great performance voice in good shape ,but too much newer material that seemed to cool the excitement down and was boring.

  • Yusuf/Cat Stevens: Peace Train.....Late Again Tour

    by maddog1 on 2014-12-04Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The last time I saw Cat Stevens was 1972 at McMaster University, it was well worth the wait as he brought me back to my teenage years. His music has meant so much and is still so relevant today its haunting.
