Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

Went with my daughter, her husband and my grandson.

by Dj on 2022-05-25Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Went with my daughter, her husband and my 4 year grandson. It was fun but thought there could be more for the little ones, ie scooting the puck on net or more fun stuff. It was very loud throughout. My grandson luckily had ear mufflers. But over all he had a blast but we left middle os second period. Thank you.

    Need larger screens

by Asin on 2022-05-24Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

It’s fun to watch in the dome and have the excitement from fellow fans. But the screens are just too small and low resolution to watch a game. Maybe instal large roll down Screens with a projector during these away game viewings

    Fun times for family

by Barb on 2022-05-24Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Even though the flames lost :(. We had a great time. Our 4 daughters got to experience an NHL “like” game which would occur in the regular or playoffs. We are concession good, had cinnamon ice cream, watch the game on the big screen and enjoyed participating with the crowd and all the extras. Was totally fun I wish more people had attended and not wasted the “free” seats.

    by Pikers39 on 2022-05-24Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Took my two children to their first battle of Alberta hockey game and it did not disappoint! Had everything from a nhl record being set, hat trick, scrums, goalie being chased and lots of scoring. A playoff game they and I will not soon forget!

    Old building, amazing food

by Oilers Fan on 2022-05-23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The Saddledome is a dump. No two ways about it. That being said, oh man the food is amazing. Specifically the nachos from Banded Peak Brewing. Their beer is amazing as well. As nice as Rogers Place is, their food is woefully inadequate, but their team is way better. GO OILERS

    by R. J. on 2022-05-23Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Happy with the seats we had, we had regular priced tix, resale tix are insured pricing. I think there should be a little more control on the resell.

    Event was cancelled

by Burge on 2022-05-22Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

A good time inside the lot with fans. This one if just gave you 2 tickets the other for game 3 there are a few problems. There were tons of tickets left I would click on the ticket green check mark in the cart and then it was someone beat you to it you can't leave 1 seat etc etc. I just wanted to go. I called them finally and said for the next event just have the best available and you get what you get. I would have been a lot easier as a lot of people had this problem.. For a mass event that is super popular that is the best way to go just to get in.

    Flames game

by Lawrence on 2022-05-21Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Game was amazing. The overpriced tickets on the other hand is ridiculous. Verified resales of over double and triple the second there released to the public. It’s sad the average person or family can’t attend a game!

    I only care about winning

by Adrian Morrison on 2022-05-21Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The dome is a dump. Good luck walking the concourse during intermission. I also use the washroom before going to a game. I’ve gone to all the playoff games this year so I’m sick of the food selections. But I love playoff hockey, and I only care about W’s. That’s when I’m impressed

by Evan on 2022-05-19Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

It is just random who gets tickets. It was sold out in 10 seconds and I was waiting at 8:55. We managed to get 4 tickets and then they cancelled the red lot
