About

Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Billy Howerdel have been taking the alternative rock and metal worlds by storm as A Perfect Circle since 2000. The band has been active recently in South America and Australia on a string of festival concert dates in early 2013 after a massive US tour in the summer of 2011. The legendary live dynamics of Howerdel's precision playing and Keenan's world-class rock baritone has fans snapping up tickets rapidly. Concerts consist of simple sets along with an amalgam of music from all three of their albums. They also perform tasteful renditions of some surprising cover songs, as noted in their most recent greatest hits album, Three Sixty (2013).

Howerdel is a former guitar tech for rock-world heavyweights Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Fishbone. He and Keenan met in 1992 when Tool was opening for Fishbone. The union began as the brainchild of Howerdel, who had been working on the music for a number of years prior to playing some demos for Keenan. The singer suggested that he could hear himself performing the songs, and the circle was put into motion. Their debut album, Mer De Noms appeared at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. The band later produced the 2003 album Thirteenth Step and 2004's eMOTIVe. Keenan and Howerdel share the lineup with top-notch rock royalty James Iha, formerly of Smashing Pumpkins, who holds down rhythm guitar, while bassist Matt McJunkins was picked up from Howeredel's side project, Ashes Divide. Meanwhile, renowned Vandals and one-time Guns 'N' Roses member Josh Freese is featured on drums. A Perfect Circle appeared suddenly, cranked out tons of music and sort of just disappeared, however, years later, the group is now back with another release in a pattern that seems, well, circular.

Amazing show! Highly recommend seeing A Perfect Circle live. Awesome performance, the opening band The Beta Machine were really good as well.

  • A Perfect Circle is a must-see!

by CanadianCat on 2017-11-14Cross Insurance Arena (Formerly Cumberland County Civic Center) - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was amazing! The quality of the performance was excellent and the visuals really added to it. I also really liked that the taking pictures and videos was not allowed, as it made it seem much more like a live concert experience and less like a photo shoot/selfie party. I would definitely recommend.

  • A perfect circle was perfect at the Pearl!!

This venue is amazing. Small, with a fantastic view of the stage from any seat. The sound quality is amazing!

  • Kicked ass

by aenema on 2011-08-11STAGE AE - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

despite some folks stating APC was less than steller in Toronto, their set in Pittsbourg kicked serious ass. I wans't pleased that the audience in general was tame and couldn't get them back on for an Encore, and they did not perform some of their most famous songs like 3 libras, but overall, great show

  • Maynard is the man

Amazing! Anything Maynard is involved in is unreal. Great seats and even better time. Looking forward to new material from tool!

  • Didn't play judith or 3 libras

by SmielmaN on 2011-07-10Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 2 out of 5

When you see a band and they don't play their two biggest songs, that's disappointing. I've seen them play years ago and brought my wife and sister to this show and they were excited. Then we are all disappointed because we get to hear a Marvin Gaye cover and filler songs but no Judith or 3 Libras. Really really really disappointing. I wouldn't have bought tickets if I knew the show would have had that set list. And I am a huge Tool and APC fan, but man was that disappointing.

  • Amazing, but wtf no Judith?

    by Mike7777spqr on 2011-07-08Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show, Maynard is a genius. Was disappointed that they didn't play Judith, but other then that, amazing.

  • A perfect performance

by DaddySatan on 2011-07-06Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing. Superbly atmospheric. Even with the stupid policy of no pictures at a show I just paid $85 to see.

  • Perfect Circle a little too mellow

    by Carm1 on 2011-07-06Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

The show was not too bad. We would`ve liked more songs that weren't so mellow.

  • Perfect Circle....

by WoodrowMac on 2011-07-06Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

Great venue, great sound, quite a disappointing performance. Maynard can pull off hiding at the back of the stage when he's with Tool because with that band the bass & guitar are possibly more of a driving force than his vocals. This is not the case with A Perfect CIrcle. He could get away with standing at the back of the stage if the music was great, but it really wasn't. The lush wall of sound guitar, bass, keyboards are fine... but having nothing else to watch was frankly boring, as were most of their songs. I kept getting this weird feeling that the audience is the butt of some weird joke where the band is trying to see how little they can deliver and still manage to tour and make tons of money. On top of that they played very little from Mer de Noms, which was really the only above average album they put out. Definitely not worth the $85 ticket. I saw the Black Keys two nights prior, and they managed to pull off a show that was 100% better and at the MTS Centre at that! If a two-man band can blow the doors off a giant impersonal arena, the lazy fellas in A Perfect Circle should be able to give people their money's worth in a small intimate theatre. All in all the songs were boring, and the performance was entirely uninspired. I don't think I've been this insulted by a performance since I attended Modest Mouse when they played at the Walker theatre a few years ago. Definitely wouldn't go see them again. I've seen Tool twice... I know its a different band, but this was not even close to the same concert going experience. Tool is good enough that Maynard's arrogance and disdain for his audience can be overlooked. A perfect circle is not that good.

I loved every minute of this show! The Concert Hall has excellent acoustics, and APC definitely took full advantage of them. They didn't waste time and launched right into their set, they played a selection from all of their albums, and their lighting and set complemented the act well. I would go see them again for SURE. Awesome.
