  • A Beautiful Christmas Show

by trixiblackcat on 2011-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

The sets were beautiful and the pointe dancing was very impressive. However, there were three things that made it less than perfect for me. 1. The storyline itself is confusing if you don't already know the story. I read it in the program first and still had a hard time following it. I thought of bringing my daughter, but am glad I didn't as she would have been asking questions the entire time. 2. The Cossack Dancers were hugely disappointing. It was a Russian story and I expected better for that particular scene. 3. TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS IN THE WINGS!!! My guest and I both found the off-side activity excessive and very distracting. We were seated on the far left, and we could constantly see people in the far right, just off the stage, stretching, scratching and lying on the floor in sweats!! At one point the curtain was open for several minutes revealing bare wood walls, a neon exit sign and a man (stage manager) talking to someone. This seemed very unprofessional. Overall, it was pleasant and I'm glad I got to see it at Christmastime. I would recommend it, but I would not see it again. I far more enjoyed Peter Pan at the Queen Elizabeth Theater in 2009.

  • The definitive Nutcracker

by setithegreat on 2011-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I saw this last year and it is as good as ever, wonderful costumes, excellent dancing especially the children and a live orchestra. The wolves ,mice ,Tsar Rat and Cossack rats were great.

Alberta Ballet's production of the Nutcracker makes for a very pretty and enjoyable evening. We saw the evening performance on December 29th at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. All the lead dancers were in fine form. We especially enjoyed the Nutcracker Prince, whose grande allegro was excellent. My daughter claims that the Sugarplum Fairy brought tears of happiness and admiration to her eyes during the Adagio section of the Pas de Deux. Of the international dances in the second act, which were all very well done, our favourite was the Russian. The highlight of the evening, however, aside from those few mentioned segments, were, as always the Snowflakes and the Waltz of the Flowers. Very well done and so pretty. The men in the Waltz of the flowers were in very good form, great grande allegro and very together.

  • Excellent!

by Yuditt on 2011-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Everything was excellent! The dancing was superb, the costumes amazing. The scenery fantastic. It was beautiful to watch and the music was excellent as well. My 15 year old grandaughter loved it and my 67 year olf husband (first time ballet) gave it a 7.5/10.

  • consider the matinee, mothers of young children.

    by Rod23 on 2011-12-30Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I'd never been to a ballet before, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The costumes, the skill of the dancers and the music was completely enjoyable. The problem arose when the row of seats behind me was occupied by a young mother and her two daughters. The girls were no more than four years old, and were not interested in the show in the least. Despite everyone for three rows around whispering "QUIET!!", the mother refused to take her daughters out. At intermission, the usher was surrounded by protestors, but insisted that the manager of the theatre would have to "monitor the situation". Finally, halfway through the second act, the mother and her daughters were ordered out and we were finally able to enjoy the performance without our seats being kicked, our hair being mussed, and our eardrums assaulted by screams of protest from the children who never should have been allowed into the performance in the first place.

Beautiful costumes, great dancing, choreography was superlative, just a little disappointed in some of the costumes in the second act. Really enjoyed the show. Best Nutcracker I've ever seen.

  • Best Ballet Ever!

    by Anonymous111 on 2011-10-18Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Honestly, I've seen a lot of ballets (and musicals, operas, symphonies, etc. - I love the arts) and this was among the best performances I have ever seen. If the Alberta Ballet returns to Vancouver with this production, I will be first in line to see it again. It was brilliant.

  • great show when you can see it!

by whiteshuga on 2011-10-18Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Love Lies Bleeding was an amazing show. The costumes were exciting and innovative as was the choreography. I was dissapointed by the fact that my fullpriced fourth row tickets were 30% obstucted.

  • Yukichi Hattori was brilliant

by marianna on 2011-10-17Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Yukichi Hattori was the highlight of the show as Elton Fan. The costumes were really well done, and appropriate for the music. The only down side was that the show ended too soon.
