  • First ballet

by Terrie on 2024-03-27Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

This was my very first ballet and I was so impressed. I laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. I thought the dancing was fabulous and they portrayed so much emotion. I could feel so much through the performance. Thank you for this beautiful portrayal of Hanzel and Gretel. I had so much fun!!

  • A wonderful production

by Cate on 2024-03-27Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

As a contemporary opera, we didn't know much about it. We were delightfully surprised with the quality of the production, the characters, the ballet, the costumes and the creative set design. Bravo ! Our only disappointment was the small audience for such a well done production.

  • We're so lucky to have Alberta Ballet. 🩷

Beautiful. A dark, Grimm fairytale, mixed with Tim Burton-y burlesque.

Our family really enjoyed this performance. It was our first time at the ballet and everyone was pleasantly surprised as to how much they liked it. Great value for a nice evening out!

  • fabulous Hansel and Gretel interpretation

by 40years of watching on 2024-03-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the artistic rendering of this fairytale: silent film, 20's jazz. The sets and costumes were very imaginative (think Cirque du Soleil), the fresh score held up the dance component beautifully. I so enjoyed the addition of caring parents, and their pas de deux - romantic and moving. I would definitely recommend seeing this ballet if you have a chance.

This show went way beyond my expectations. It was fabulously quirky, hilarious and the music was phenomenal. By far my most favorite and memorable ballet! I dont know how another show can top it. I didn’t want it to end!

Interesting depiction of Hansel & Gretel. Beautiful dancers, engaging story line. Great costumes. Visually pleasing and fun. Even my 17 year old daughter loved it. Best ballet performance I’ve seen in awhile!

I feel fortunate to have got to go and see the ballet. All of the performers were so talented. The set, costumes and makeup were all so well done. I have no doubt all of the shows this team puts on will be amazing and super entertaining. I laughed and cried during the production, and highly recommend.

  • Fabulous

The production of Hansel and Gretel was fantastic. A modern yet familiar take on the story line. Excellent talent and performance.

  • Fantastic.

by Amelia on 2024-03-10Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Dancers were absolutely incredible and the story was amazing. Very worth it. The only downside was the people sitting next to me who continued to talk and would take me out of the story each time. Please remember to not bring young children who are not capable of sitting quietly for an extended period of time as it is rude to those around you. Especially to an evening performance.

  • The show was great but...

by Victor on 2024-01-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great but the chosen location (Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium) for the ballet is not good. Instead of enjoying the show, I enjoyed the view of the head of the person sitting in front of me. I have never had such kind of problem in a movie theatre, Jack Singer Concert Hall or Max Bell Theatre.

  • great dancing, white washed the second act

by White washing on 2024-01-02Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I love going to see the Nutcracker and have been for years now. However, since last year they have taken out many of the great dances based of off the Spanish, Arabian, Chinese and French and turned them into dances of people in white costumes dancing around to the same music no longer showcasing the different nationalities. It's incredibly sad to watch. Though I will say the dancing of the actors was great this year, I really hope they bring back the international dances in 2024.

  • Disappointed

by ā¤ļø it live. on 2023-12-27Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Chose to give up my season subscription this year due to the huge bump in prices. Decided to take in the Nutcracker as hadn’t been for over 20 years. Was expecting something fabulous. This however appeared to be an edited version of past ballets with most of the focus on the opening act. The magic of the travels through the different realms was non existent but rather mashed up into one set with Clara merely sitting on the sidelines as an observer. The mice & wolf costumes were wonderful but those of the dancers of the 2nd act were dull & old looking. The ballet has become an expensive undertaking but the quality of the performances of this company has diminished significantly from the past.

  • New Energy

by Catherine on 2023-12-26Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

We attended the matinee performance of the Nutcracker on Dec. 23rd. There seemed to be a new energy in this years performance. Although we still love the ballerina that portrayed Clara in the last 2 seasons, this years Clara, Nutcracker and Drosselmeyer did a brilliant job, both in their acting and their dancing. All the dancers were exceptional this year and you could feel the energy and excitement on stage. The CPO did their usual brilliant Tchaikovsky performance. A particular "shout out"to the piccolo and flute for their excellent playing. Thank you to all those behind the scenes who make this production happen. Can't wait for next year's ballet.
