BOY GEORGE IN CONCERT:

In an era where synthesizers and drum machines dominated the pop charts, Boy George defied the mainstream and created a counterculture with his distinct, soulful vocals and androgynous style. As the frontman of new wave band Culture Club, he entertained audiences around the world with rock and reggae-infused tracks, becoming one of pop's most enduring icons with his bold makeup and eccentric stagewear. It’s been eighteen years since his last solo release, and fans will be delighted to know that George will return to the spotlight in 2014 for the This Is What I Do Tour, complete with a nine-piece band, including a brass section, and plenty of glamour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Boy George rose to fame as the intriguing lead singer of Culture Club, which found commercial success with the release of their 1982 debut album Kissing To Be Clever. The record featured the international No. 1 hit “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?," launching the band to global stardom virtually overnight. Culture Club continued their chart run with “Karma Chameleon," the second single off their sophomore album Colour By Numbers, earning them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1984. Boy George started his solo career in the late ‘80s with the release of Sold, which produced several hit singles and compelled George to form his own record label, More Protein, in 1989. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, the mercurial George has reinvented himself numerous times, finding success as a DJ, fashion designer, and Tony Award-winning producer for the musical "Taboo." Hot on the heels of the 2013 release of his ninth studio album, he'll grace fans once again with his legendary showmanship on the 2014 This Is What I Do Tour.

Just saw Boy George and the Culture Club at Casino Rama in Orillia. What a talented, humble, spiritual man. This is a man who has overcome a drug addiction that kills most people. His music tonight was amazing. We got to hear music from the 80's and his Culture Club days to his new music which is a fresh and exciting genre. His voice is sexy, mature and sultry. He engages the audience. I got within 3 feet of him and was so excited. He is incredible. Loved him 25 years ago and still love him now. Thanks so much for a great night.

Boy George started one hour late

by dcor on 2014-04-29The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

We were excited to attend the concert as we grew up with 80's music. However, a few things made the experience not very exciting. First of all, prior to the show they played obscure Reggae music using old vinyl records. That in itself was ok. However, Boy George was an hour late starting, which meant we were listening to these obscure songs for over an hour and a half (we went in 30 minutes early to get a good spot). Second, Boy George only sang 3 of his popular 80's songs, and sang mostly the new songs. His comment that "he is so happy the 80's is over" was very telling about what his thoughts about his past hits. I think the 80's made him popular, and he seems to have a chip on his shoulder about what made him popular. He should just embrace the 80s and re-create himself to regain his past popularity. Overall, it was supposed to be fun event to be out with friends and family to enjoy a concert together. The concert was the disappointment of the evening.

Poor Boy George. His voice is shot, and as he rather nastily informed us after the first song, the eighties are over. This concert was pretty viable evidence.

    Boy George lookin really good.

by Anonymous on 2014-04-28The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

First time seeing Boy George since the 80"s with Culture Club at Maple Leaf Gardens. He looks healthy sounds great. So worth seeing, glad I got a chance to see him and the great band and backup singer he brought with him. His new music fits his voice and persona. Unexpectedly happy that the show surpassed my expectations after almost 30 years.

Do u like laid back Reggae

by LeChat33 on 2014-04-28The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Slow and reggae which was different yet nice for me. If u are looking for a Culture Club concert you will not find it here. If u really just wanted to admire Boy George the way he is today then you get it. I enjoyed the reggae flare because I'm open minded and a music lover. I bet some fans left very unhappy

boy george has his sparkle back!

by banannie on 2014-04-27The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

A great performance by boy george and his band. They performed all the songs I was hoping to hear from the new album like 'it's easy', 'nice and slow' and 'love and danger'. Was happily surprised to hear some culture club classics like 'church of the poison mind', 'do you really want to hurt me' and 'karma chameleon'. Even though he told the audience the 80s were over we were happy to remenice for a little while.

Boy George bids adieu to the 80's!

by KevvyD on 2014-04-27The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

While the 80's significance of boy george will never truly diminish, george showed the mostly standing room crowd why it's good to be him in 2014. A healthy, happy and musically focused Boy George treated us to a set that was heavy with tracks from his amazing new CD, This Is What I Do. Despite sound problems in his monitors from the onset that seemed to annoy him, he still delivered an amazing show. He didn't chat a lot with the crowd, but at one point he noticed one concertgoer with a Boy George doll from the 80's. "What a strange thing to bring to a show," he laughed. "The 80's are over -- Thank God!" And while some folks in the front shook their heads and disagreed with him, he smiled and said, "It's true. Jon Moss is locked in a trunk backstage!" This evening marked the first time in my thirty year adoration of George of hearing him perform live. Those pesky sound problems seemed to have pissed him off enough to cut the second encore, but it was still truly Unforgettable!

    George, oh Boy!

by Sharpy on 2014-04-27The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

His voice has mellowed, his act has toned down and his new music is more insightful, but the music that built his career still is fun and enduring. Some nice covers of Lou Reed, TRex and others. All in all a great show. Really good sound. One detraction was the lighting, I don't know if it was his or the venue's, but he needed a follow-spot, he blended into the background and was hard to see from my vantage.

"This Is What I Do".. this what he did.

by BlueBlueBlueJay on 2014-04-27The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Boy George returned to Toronto and he was fantastic. The concert was more of a promotion for the new album "This Is What I Do", versus a "Hits Tour". Hearing the songs live from the new album was great. I had purchased the CD 3 weeks before and was aware of the songs and back to Reggae beats) George indicated he was back working with Culture Club and new music with them would follow soon. The show had a Reggae feel to it, like Culture Club's earliest album 'Kissing To be Clever". The grooves were slow and spot on. George's singing style has matured. His voice has a raspy adult, weathered edge to it. I like that. Besides songs from the new CD, 3 of Culture Club's hits were featured, plus 1 solo hit "Everything I Own" (Originally done by Bread) from George's catalog.
