Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with eight division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome(Opens in new tab) was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

First time ever at an NHL game. What an awesome experience

  • We enjoy watching the Flames play and love when they win.

It was difficult to explain to my grandchildren that we didn't get coupons for Bobbleheads like many others did. I wish tickets were more affordable/accessible so that more people could attend. We paid $843.35 for 4 tickets. Realistically that was much more than I could afford. The seats were fantastic but these seats are not usually available for non season ticket holders. I wish there were good affordable seats kept open for non season ticket holders so that families could get to see a game. Also, my grandchildren were sure that because of the seats we had they would see Harvey from close up during this game. And that didn't happen.

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the Flames game. The Flames played great and won the game. Fans were into it and seemed to enjoy it very much as well.

Great deals on food before the game Everybody super friendly. The 1st and 2nd periods were rather boring but the flames came alive in the 3rd period and won in the shootout

  • An Epic Event

by John the Flames fan on 2024-10-15Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The Flames did an amazing job of creating much excitement for the home opener. I remember the times when a home opener was just another game on the schedule. This was exciting and great to experience in person. It is also helpful that the Flames are playing so well. That alone creates much excitement and satisfaction for those attending. My only disconnect is that I have trouble reading the new score board. There is no way that I can read the numbers and players that are on the ice. I can't see the shots on goal or the time on the penalty. I can only read the actual score. My eye sight is a bit challenged however I can drive. I can see all of this on my home TV. There needs to be a way to make those stats significantly bigger. Perhaps reduce the video screen by a bit which be the way is easy to see.

  • Great process

by Martina on 2024-10-01Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Easy to scan in. Great seats. Would be better to have a guide on food choices/map to vendors when booking, but all in all, was a great time.

  • Excitement in the air

Missed 2 goals waiting in line to take a piss DURING THE GAME !! That’s how bad the line ups are for bathrooms. The new arena can’t come fast enough !!

  • Using the App quick & easy

by Looking for Flames Win on 2024-02-21Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Appreciation for Special price on food, some beverages when arriving early at Saddledome. Courtesy shown by concession staff and ushers ✔️ Did not appreciate the disc jockey's head pounding 'music'. Not opposed to loud music, just music that makes sense.

  • Gratis atmosphere

by Ycnan on 2024-01-30Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

We (from Holland) did see 3 games. The atmosphere in the Sattledome was great. Fans of both sides joint together without any difficulties (how different it is in Europe, sadly). Plenty opportunities to buy food and drinks. Arthouse our sheets were on row 20/21 we could see the game perfectly.

  • Great game, as my Oilers won

    by Kick44 on 2024-01-23Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Game was great, terrible experience with the washrooms. Hope that when they build a new arena, there will be sufficient washrooms

  • Leafs win!!!

by Goonman on 2024-01-21Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Good seats, concourse level. Lots of hosts/hostesses to help if you need. However , the ‘Dome leaves a lot to be desired. Horrible traffic flow inside the dome, restrooms are undersized and if you’re in the wrong spot, can be quite a walk. Typical of sports venues , food and alcohol are overpriced. But hey, the Leafs won!

  • Leafs win!
