    Alergic to Cats

by Alergic on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was so looking forward to seeing this show and by the 2 or 3 song I was bored and knew it was a mistake. Couldn't quite make out what they were singing and I do know the story and the contents of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Mr. Mistoffelees - his pirouettes were less than impressive Siamese cat - was slim (that's it) Skimbleshanks - those railway wheels were far to heavy for one of those cats as they couldn't hold them upright ! This was a let down Sorry :(

Cats Ottawa - when did it become an Opera???

by Anonymous on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was very disappointed at the performance - I took a 12 year old and a 6 yr old who both love musicals. The second half better than the first but this is the 2nd performance I have been at the NAC for where you could not hear the singing due to the overpowering of the orchestra. This show came across like an Opera and the 12 year old could not understand a word either (not just me). The show was slow and could have cut out a fair bit of the dead time...ie the actors could have moved a touch faster and still had the graceful lithe of cats portrayed. am glad I don't have a seasoned pass....very very disappointing!

    Cats In Ottawa

by GrandFromage on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Excellent overall with a slight weakness in a couple of members of troupe's voices. Staging lights and sound good except the 3rd number was hard to hear ?

    Not worth the price

by Anonymous on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The play's performance, signing and acrobatics, were good. In my humble opinion this play hasn't been revisited since its original 1980's production.....The light show is outdated, the story line isn't great and the opening act way too long. The second part is more entertaining and the "close encounter of the third kind" moment is laughable.....

    No balcony for Cats!

by Diane0769 on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My first time to see Cats and unfortunately, the balcony didn't do it justice. There are no big screen at the NAC so from the balcony you cannot see the costumes nor hear the words of the songs. I would love to go see Cats again, but next time I will be sitting in the first rows!

    Cat's was Confusing

by Sleepygeek on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We've been to a number of musicals over the years. The NAC continues to provide great entertainment and a wealth of different acts. We had never seen Cats and felt that we were in store for a treat. Cat's may be the longest running musical ever but it's also the most confusing, dis-jointed production ever . The players were good, the imagery was good but the lack of cohesion was too much for us. Outside of the "Memories" number the score is uninspired and boring. Overall - my least favorite musical ever.

    Amazing!

by maxwellcat on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was told that CATS was old and outdated compared to other shows, that couldn't be farther from the truth! The singing and dancing was amazing and the costumes were wonderful. Don't take anyone's word for it.....just go!

    Cats

by nanuq on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I enjoyed the music, the set, and the talent of the performers. I read the Citizen review and thought the critic must be getting too jaded (actually included a "been there, done that" reference). There were some minor points I agreed with (Jennyanydots did screech), but mostly I thought the critic was unfair in not recognizing the level of talent in the production. there were two highlights for me - the solo by Grizabella - especially the second time, and the dance done by Mr. Mistoffelees.

    Not what we expected

by GumbieCat on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Going in, I didn't know anything about this production aside from knowing it was second longest running show on broadway. Knowing this my expectations were very high which is maybe why i'm so disappointed after seeing it. Perhaps in its time the show was spectacular but 30 years later the show comes across dated and the set is static and boring. The sound quality was poor except for Memory which was excellent. The first act was dreadfully boring and the second act picked up a bit but not enough to save it in my opinion. The people beside me left at the intermission. Looking back I don't dislike it as much as I did while watching it.

    Boring

by QueenBonbon on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Set didn't change. Show was unremarkable. Fell asleep many times, lots of people in audience asleep. Orchestra was beautiful to listen to though!

Sound and Lighting were barely passable

by Spookie on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My Husband and I were sitting in the central orchestra for the performance. We found that the lighting for the show was low and made it difficult to discern details. Also the lighting quality was generally very blue or pink in tone. The sound quality was terrible. The orchestra drowned out the performers and you could not hear the lyrics clearly. This is not acceptable for a Broadway performance. Also the mics on some of the performers were misbalanced, resulting in some performers (higher tones) dominating the soundscape.

    Cats was forgettable!

by Maya2 on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was one of the worst performances that I have ever seen. From the cheap lighting to the weak performances, this was one big snorefest. Add to that the poor sound quality, this made for one forgettable performance. My husband and I left during the intermission. At least we managed to salvage half of the evening. Save yourself the time and money and don't go to this event.

    Cats roared

by Gigikeen on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I remember going to Cats with my mother twenty five years ago. Now I took my daughter. The show was fabulous. Their furry costumes, catlike characters, their magnificent dancing and lovely singing all made for a world class performance. We are so glad we went to this musical.

    CATS

by Shelagh on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

CATS was definitely forgettable - I remember seeing it in London many years ago and this was BORING. Nothing memorable at all. Blah in fact. We were also in the Mezzanine and the stage was far too far away for us to feel connected. Shame, I was taking my granddaughter for what I hoped would be an excellent performance. Far too many old cats!

    CATS was unbelievable!

by JHNH on 2011-02-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We enjoyed the show from start to finish! From the opening scene of the "Naming of the Cats" to the final act of the "Ad-dressing of the Cats" the show was unforgettable! The cast suceeded in bringing the characters to life before our eyes!
