The movie is better. But is was nice to see what inspired it. The band on stage was great!

    Chicago - booring.

by Toothella on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I was extremely very disappointed in this stage production. I loved the movie a WHOLE lot more, which doesn't usually happen. The acting was way too cheesy/hokey for my taste. I felt like they were trying to make it too funny. I would have preferred a more real show. That's actually why I liked Flynn and Amos - because they were real. The rest I found tried too hard for laughs, and maybe that's supposed to be the character of the stage show, but I didn't really go for it. Some of the choreography was good, but not too exciting. Should've been a whole lot more. I did love the choreo for "All I Care About", though, with the feathers. Loved how they used them in so many interesting ways. The singing...character voices? Intentional? Everything was so throaty and nasal. I loved Amos' one note at the end of his song. That was fantastic. Other than that though.. Cell Block Tango...why were all the women so CRAZY? And why were their voices SO high pitched?? It just wasn't exciting or engaging, in my opinion. Roxie's and Velma's duets, at the ends of Acts I and II were BORING. WHAT a horrible way to end the show. I couldn't believe it. My favourite part of the show BY FAR was the men. Nothing else was capturing my attention, so at least there were nice men to look at. Oh, and Mary Sunshine was outstanding! I knew it was a man as soon as I saw her, but then he started to sing and I had second thoughts because it was just so incredible!

    A fizzled Razzle Dazzled performance

by Razzle on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

The minimalist approach to the play made for interesting individual interpretations to the story. Roxie played her part well, her facial expressions were priceless. Roxie the puppet held the audience’s attention when it was evident people were losing their patience with the slow and arduous story line. The latter part of the show, the sole juror held the audience’s attention with his comical antics. I won’t say the play was a disappointment, but it certainly won’t be the most memorable of shows.

    Chicago was amazing!

by OttawaSteve on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

The integration of the live orchestra with an incredibly talented cast made for an awesome evening. The simplicity of the staging, lighting, and set design made for a great show, with the emphasis on the actors & actresses along with the incredible orchestra.

    Very good

by Jord on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Overall the show was very good. I had tickets that were very far back and i think because of it, we missed feeling "part of the show". Would still recommend it to others.

I went with some friends and we all enjoyed the show. Everyone was dancing wonderfully and the you could hear the actors clearly. For my first broadway I had a great time and will go see broadways more often.

    Chicago - only one background

by MissL on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Cons Some of the plot was dragged out a little, there was only one backdrop to the entire production (you were expected to imagine the different locations, the jail, the courtroom, etc...). One of the lead roles didn't quite have that lead role impressive voice. Pros The other lead role was phenomenal (voice, comedic timing, etc...)... There were quite a few phenomenal supporting role singers as well. There was lots of dancing and singing at the same time, and the music was great. I know the start of my review makes it out to be not a great show but it was... it's not phantom of the opera or hairspray, but still enjoyable

    Chicago the Musical

by Alldreams on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I attended with my two daughters (17 and 24) who both enjoy singing and performing various songs from Chicago. We all had a great evening and enjoyed the theatrics. Personally, I found the story line much easier to follow on the stage version, compared to the movie.....although my daughters don't agree with me. Great way to spend a night out!

    Chicago was excellent!

by Enie on 2009-07-15National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I was very impressed with the production of Chicago and enjoyed it a lot. The cast was so talented and the dancing was unbelievable. I wasn't sure how much I would like it before I went, but I was certainly sold after seeing it.
