ratta tat tat no kill shot
by PerformanceWatcher on 2010-03-29Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonFabulous professional dancers, powerful singing, strong female characters and Jazz, what's not to like about the musical Chicago? The narrative, costumes, and set! The storyline left me without any connection to the characters depicted on stage. I was missing the pivotal, moving moment that would draw me into the text. Most of the costuming was bland at best, ill placed at times, and in a couple of instances distractingly inappropriate. The set was mainly strip of stage wrapped around the raked setting of the orchestra. I suspect the simplicity is efficient for a travel show, but extremely bland rather than minimalist. I have experienced powerful grey minimalist set design and drab worker's overalls style of costuming to enhance a moving stage performance. I have also appreciated the delicious eye candy of AB Ballet's Nutcracker 2009/2010 season. The set design of Chicago: the Musical was an uninspiring bland. Having recently moved to Northern Alberta, I note there seems to be a great number of churches, more if you include the unofficial religion of hockey. For my inspiration, motivation, awe for human creativity and invention, I attend live theater. Unlike the evangelical theater goers around me, I did not rise to my feet in applause at the end of this performance. Why do people give standing ovations to every live performance they attend? Is it because the ticket price is so costly, or they don't attend much live theater? I feel the potential of the powerful voices and accomplished dancing of the performers was wasted on this repetition stage production of Chicago: the Musical. This was the first time in years that I tried to figure out how soon we could leave without being rude to the performers who did a great job with what they were given. I'm glad we had seats on the aisle.
