About

Dave Matthews Band in Concert

With a career spanning more than 27 years, Dave Matthews Band is one of the most influential bands in rock history. In 1991, vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape and sought the assistance of drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville, VA music scene. 16-year-old bassist Stefan Lessard came on board shortly thereafter. Their infectious, distinctive sound garnered lots of early attention and a die-hard loyal fan base, catapulting the band into one of the most successful touring acts of the past three decades.

The group has since released nine studio albums and numerous live recordings, selling a collective 38 million CDs and DVDs combined since the 1994 release of its major label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming. The GRAMMY®-winning band's many hits include "What Would You Say," "Crash Into Me," "Too Much," "Everyday," "American Baby," "Funny The Way It Is," "Mercy" and "Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)."

Founding member LeRoi Moore passed away in August of 2008 and the band paid tribute to him with 2009's Platinum-certified Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Dave Matthews Band has since welcomed longtime collaborators/touring musicians Jeff Coffin (saxophone), Rashawn Ross (horns) and Tim Reynolds (guitar) into the lineup and - most recently - keyboardist Buddy Strong.

With 2018's Come Tomorrow, Dave Matthews Band became the first group in history to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In a Critic's Pick review, The New York Times observed, "willed optimism fills the songs on 'Come Tomorrow,' while cynicism and irony are nowhere within earshot... each song notes the fears and sorrows it's determined to overcome. The music does that, with consolation in its melodies and a life force in its rhythms."

Renowned for their live performances, Dave Matthews Band has sold over 24 million tickets since its inception and ranked as the biggest ticket seller worldwide of the past decade. The group's Bama Works Fund, established in 1999, has raised more than $52 million dollars for humanitarian and environmental initiatives.

  • DMB at the Gorge

by Scan on 2009-09-16Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 2 out of 5

The venue was very cool but the seating (downhill slide) was way to uncomfortable to stay for the entire show. Everyone should go to the Gorge at least once..... The band was okay but we didn't drive 5 hours to see a friend of Dave Mathews play the banjo for 4 songs..... would have like to hear more of the newer songs.

  • DMB was unreal!

Was a little concerned when Dave had to cancel a show due to laryngitis, but he didn't falter a second all weekend long! This was my first Gorge experience and have been telling everyone since what an amazing setting it was to see any concert.... but the fact that I got to experience the Dave Matthews Band for the first time live there was delicious icing on the cake! I would recommend this venue and band to anyone - new or old fans of DMB alike!

  • DMB as awesome as ever

by Jurgee on 2009-09-14Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

Dave Matthews Band cannot fail. They are a joyous experience, men with true vision, hardworking, inspired, dedicated and ever so pro at what they are doing. I will be back again next year for sure, because as the other "regulars" at the amphitheatre found out already, you just cannot get enough of the truth and honesty DMB represents, and turns into music and lyrics. Dave's humility in all this, giving credit to his incredibly accomplished band mates, describing them as his "betters", also shows me that he is a giant of a human being, who truly understand the meaning of love. Cheers, Jürgen

  • Dave Matthews Rocked!!

by marmluna on 2009-09-13Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

My first event at the Gorge Amphitheatre was unforgettable. Even though the skies poured buckets of rain all day, a 1/2 hour before the concert started, the sun came through the clouds, two rainbows appeared overhead and that was a sign of the amazing concert to come. Dave Matthews and his band dried the water from our backs with the warmth of his songs and the electricity of the music. We danced for 2 1/2 hours and rocked the venue with the amazing entertainment of my favourite band. Now I know why people make the pilgrimage to the Gorge year after year to see the most talented musicians in NA.

  • DMB at the Gorge - AWESOME

As usual, Dave rocked the Gorge Amphitheater. Great set list and no super long jams, not that I really ever minded those. Great show!

  • Dave Matthews Band is in a class of their own!

    by charlie8 on 2009-09-10Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

This is my seventh year to the gorge to see Dave Matthews and I am never disappointed. These guys are amazing performers and musicians! The talent doesn't compare to any other band! The sounds and energy they bring to the stage is breathtaking! The lyrics are always mind-blowing (Thank you Dave). I have taken different friends every year and every year they return! This band is in a class of it's own without a doubt. And the fans are phenomenal as well - everyone is singing every word to every song - it's euphoric! Thank you Dave and crew for making each year better than the last. Losing Leroi was very saddening but the band's resilience and new addition has proven he lives on. Tim Reynolds was a wonderful surprise as well! The best year by far! PS Love the new album!!

  • There is no better band then Dave Matthews Band!!

    by heather1344 on 2009-09-10Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

Such a great concert. What talent these boys have. I love every one of their CD's and the proof they actually have talent is that they sound exactly the same live... no machines helped them sound good when they were recording, they are simply unbelievably talented. That said, they bring each song to a whole other level when performed live. You think it can't get any better when you're blasting their music in the car and then you see them live and....wow. That's all I can say. WOW!! Bravo. It was a magical experience. The back drop of The Gorge, in George, Washington was just like delicious icing on a cake. I will never miss this concert again, I will be going every year as long as Dave is there. I'm only dissapointed I didn't get my ass there sooner!

  • Dave matthews band the gorge amphitheatre

by KristaMcGaw on 2009-09-09Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent venue, great music. This was my third time for this 3 day event at the Gorge, and I can't wait to go again next year. My second trip to the Gorge Amphitheater this year, so can't say enough good things about this place. The band was loving the reception from the crowd, particularly for their new songs from the new album. That energy carried through all weekend.

  • DMB @ the Gorge

    by Heavyload2009 on 2009-09-09Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

The three nights were incredible. Song to song, night to night, the Gorge’s amazing backdrop set the stage for the Dave Matthews Band in a way no other venue could possible do. They had good energy and more so as the weekend progressed. Though their new stuff is great, most people anxiously waited to hear their old favourites and showed their appreciation as each song came up singing along and dancing. Their concert at the Gorge is one of those must be there moments you have to experience.

Amazing venue & an incredible performance! 1st time at the Gorge and seeing Dave. We're already making plans for the 2nd annual long wknd road trip. Would be nice to see recycling facilities in the ampitheatre and the camping area. There's a monumnetal amount of waste that cold be diverted from the landfills.

DMB at the Gorge was Absolutely Amazing! I LOVE IT!!! Hearing them play with such passion it fills your soul with an unforgettable music experience! I love how they mix up their set list to include old favourites and new songs from their stellar new albulm! Being at the Gorge, feeling the energy of the fans, the connection the band members have with each other and the crowd is surreal. Every year it gets better and better! Can't wait for next year. DMB ROCKS!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Dave was great. The sun came out just before he went on. Fantastic location. Would have preferred a little more Dave and a little less "banjo guy". I would still go back but this time for all 3 days.

  • Show was awesome!!!

Can't wait to see DMB again, saw these 3 shows this weekend and it was amazing!! Go see them even if you are only a little bit of a fan and unsure, you will love it. Great show for music lovers in general as well, so much musical talent there!!

  • DMB is the best!

I saw two shows at the Gorge. The band is unbelievable. Each artist is a master of their own instrument and when put together they make unforgettable music. I would recommend them to anyone and I already have. Absolutely awesome!

  • DMB was So-So

by jimmyd on 2009-09-08Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 2 out of 5

Didn't seem like there was a spark at this concert. Could have been the cheaper seats or it could have been DMB saving up for the Saturday event. Not sure but that was my take on it. They also played a lot of songs off of their new CD so until it becomes more recognized then I think that might be another reason why it seemed a little subdued. The standard "encore" happened but the crowd really wasn't cheering that much to have DMB come back on. There seemed to be a lot of people leaving before the end. A concert that I can say I've been to but that's it.

  • Things to know before going to the GORGE

    by Winegirl555 on 2009-09-08Gorge Amphitheatre - GeorgeRating: 4 out of 5

Incredible venue, really awesome acoustics and amazing views of the valley. BUT....didn't know DMB would have two openers and not actually be on stage til 9pm (tix said DMB, 6pm only) -- at which time it's COLD outside!!!! Also, although the tix say no cameras or video, people were being let in with cameras -- and believe me, you'll want pics of this super cool venue! So my tips: bring your camera! bring blankets! bring food! And for anyone who doesn't like to be inundated with cigarette and pot smoke, this isn't the event for you. Without smoking anything, I was developing a smoker's cough and I think I was stoned by the time the night was through. And we were outside..... Yeah, it was that bad. The port-a-potties were very clean and not stinky! We were impressed with that... Also -- if you've paid for camping....no need to worry about "your spot" -- it's a big open field and really just a "park anywhere" free for all.... If you like partying, you'll love it. If you want even a little quiet(ish) time, buy the premier camping... Premier camping has a shuttle to the amphitheatre too which is a nice bonus.

This is my second time seeing Dave Matthews at the Gorge and both times he's been outstanding. (I'm already making plans to go again next year.) With such an amazing band playing in such an incredible venue, you can't go wrong.
