ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN IN CONCERT:

Formed in the late-'70s wake of punk's first wave, Echo & the Bunnymen forged a unique fusion of post-punk, new wave, and neo-psychedelia that established them as pioneers of a new direction in British rock. Today the band's moody, sophisticated sound is as compelling as ever, and their spellbinding live shows are the perfect place to experience it in the flesh. Whether brooding frontman Ian McCulloch is belting out classics from seminal 1984 album Ocean Rain or performing new material from 2014's Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen never fail to mesmerize with muscular musicianship and intense performances on their unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking their name from a list of nonsensical monikers suggested by a friend. The band made their debut in 1979 with "The Pictures on My Wall", released on the now-legendary Mute Records imprint. Their 1980 album debut Crocodiles was a critical and commercial success, cracking the UK Top 20 and setting the stage for the success of sophomore album Heaven Up Here, which reached the Top 10 in 1981. Their chart run continued in 1983 with third album Porcupine, the vessel for hit singles "The Back of Love" and "The Cutter" and predecessor to the band's landmark 1984 album Ocean Rain, widely considered by critics as the pinnacle of their '80s output. After taking a hiatus between 1993-1996 the band reformed with a vengeance, scoring another Top 10 hit with "Nothing Lasts Forever" and delivering a powerful series of performances on tour. With their 12th studio album Meteorites hitting shelves in 2104, Echo & the Bunnymen have fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Amazing show. Ian's voice has not changed a bit. The band sounds the same as the first time I heard them. Bravo!"

"The Bunnymen did amazing renditions of their albums. The improvisation on Crocodiles brought back many great live memories of Bunnymen past shows."

"It was an amazing show. The band sounded incredible and Ian was very much a dynamic presence. Two complete albums were played, along with encores, so it was definitely a show to remember."

  • Ian was drunk

by Sly on 2024-05-26History - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The venue History is fantastic. The jazz quartet who opened were great. Echo and the Bunnymen's lead singer was drunk and belligerent, calling a twenty minute intermission when he had barely gotten through five songs. I wouldn't have it any other way, hahaha.

  • Ian couldn't sing

by Oreostallion on 2024-05-26History - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

The venue and musicians with instruments were great. Ian was not. He was either sick or drunk, either way he could not sing, which was a bummer.

  • below expectations

Ian McCulloch sounded terrible! The rest of the band was ok.

  • Bunnies Don't Disappoint

    by 44 Harry on 2024-05-26History - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

1st time at History. Liked the venue. If you don't mind standing for a few hours, it's a great way to get close to a good band for not so many dollars. Don't know what someone was thinking having things start out with a jazz quartet. Beyond that, the Bunnies music sells itself for me. McCulloch's voice isn't what it used to be, but still was nice to hear. The song renditions were true to form. Will Sergeant's guitar work was exceptional. The setlist was fabulous. Heard some stuff from their later albums that I was not familiar with and really liked. Had a good time.

  • Bring on the dancing horses

by Sue on 2024-05-26History - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Well I’ve seen echo a number of times and this time just wasn’t that impressed. The venue was great. Although really hard for a short person to see the stage. They really should have made the floor a slop downward towards the stage. As for echo they were just flat. Wasn’t that keen on their rendition of some of the songs.

  • 40 ans de bonne musique

by Stéf on 2022-09-16Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 3 out of 5

  • Good show but....

by Yan on 2022-09-15Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 3 out of 5

I bought reserved seat but the venue change it for general admission (I was desappointed) Good show, great sound and good service at the bar

  • Amazing

by Fevista on 2022-09-15Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

My first time at the Corona Theater, a really great place to catch a show by one of your favorite bands. It was an excellent show, Ian McCulloch (vocals) captivated the audience with his deep voice and Will Sergeant with his talent. It was great to be able to hear the successes and know that they will still be able to continue for a few more seasons. I was upset that I didn't have souvenirs like t-shirts.

  • Expected better

by CM on 2022-09-15Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 2 out of 5

Unfortunately the day was not Ian’s best. Seemed like he was reaching at times with glimpses of vocal strength that packed a punch. The band was great! Good reminiscing about the past but would have had a better sound experience in the living room. Maybe it was where we were seated in the concert hall (balc).

  • Very disappointing concert

by Laurence on 2022-09-15Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 2 out of 5

Good opening act, at least one band out of the 2 was happy to be there. As to Echo, that is Ian the singer, it’s time to retire. Nobody wants to pay 66$ To watch a tired singer deliver 16 songs seated on a bar stool. It was pretty obvious that he’d rather be home sipping his hot milk with honey!

  • Same as always

    by Mikey K on 2022-09-15Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 4 out of 5

Mac was a heavy load, Will was graceful. I go every time and most likely will next time again!

  • Echo and the Bunnymen...in the 'Peg'

by Ardasnailz on 2017-08-11Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Like this group from my youth...not one of my overall favourite groups but when I found them coming to Winnipeg... I knew I wanted to go. In short...great night... forgot how much I liked them.... songs were great and the atmosphere built as the night went on... only downside...couldn't understand the scouse git...!!!... still a great night though.

  • Echo & the Bunnymen still and forever ROCK!!!!!

by LuluMoose on 2017-08-11Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Ian McCulloch still has his voice and badass attitude and it made for a fantastic show. Saw them 35 years ago and finally again!! Only difference is more great musical material and we are all a bit older! I recaptured my youth and my angst! Danced and sang along for the whole show!

  • Echo and the Bunnymen were brief

by Canuckruck on 2017-08-08Union Hall - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

This was a really great show musically but very very short under an hour.......only one song encore, and didn't finish the printed set list. If this is a bucket list must do....go see them. If you've crossed that off if your list you might consider passing on this tour

  • Brilliant

    by vagrant385 on 2017-08-08Union Hall - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

What can I say. E&B passed me unnoticed in the 80's I don't know why that was. In the U.K. They seemed to have been just quietly getting on with making amazing tunes and the UK being some dominated by the charts they were missed. I got into them some 8 years ago and thank god. The performance was outstanding. Ian's vocals were so strong and distinctive. While Will played some amazing guitar whilst pulling off the relaxed dad look. I can't wait to see them again.

  • Bring on the Dancing Horses!

by CJbass on 2017-08-08Union Hall - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was awful. Worst place I've ever seen a live show. But Echo and the Bunnymen made it all disappear with the first song. Ian was ever the New Wave frontman, with his brooding manner, eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. A rare smile showed adorable dimples, usually accompanied by the laughter of the crowd as we enjoyed a well-placed snippet of humour. We were even encouraged to sing along with a few of our faves, including the namesake to this review. Glad I had the chance to see them, even if it was 30 later than I first wanted! Any Echo fan will thoroughly enjoy the show.

  • Bunnymen are Legendary

by landzip on 2016-10-03The Phoenix - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show, as usual. Mac's voice was strong and powerful. Sound was great. They are true legends in early Alt Rock. Their latest tunes aren't bad either, although they only played classics at this show. Only complaint was that they didn't get to their second encore and play Ocean Rain. I heard it was due to The Phoenix' curfew. They have to fix this.

  • by nufichick on 2014-08-20The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

it was an amazing show. our second time seeing them and we will continue to go .... 5 stars for sure.

  • Echo and the Bunnymen

by KiloFoeHammer2014 on 2014-08-16The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

We went knowing only three songs. They played only 2 but from what little we know the band played amazing songs from the beginning to the end. They made up to the bad experience my brother and I had at the New Order concert. We would love to see them again and hope the band keeps coming back every year. What an experience; fans forever. Thank you Echo boys

  • The Bunnymen were Great!

by AcidJazz on 2014-08-16The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Great Show! The sound at the Danforth was fantastic. It's becoming one of my Fav venues in the city. But they need to do something about the heat! It was unbearably hot on the floor. Very uncomfortable.
