They were amazing, but the place wasn't that good...
A great concert all round. They played long and hard. Both incredibly talented musicians with a passion for their music. Great sense of humour as well! I love that she loved our skies here in Saskatchewan!
So i have been waiting many years to finally see Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings and it was well worth the wait. They are a soulful duo and it was one of the most real and beautiful shows i have ever been to. Rest assured this won't be the last time i see them and i beyond recommend going as you'll leave feeling amazed and with a used tissue in your pocket...in a good way:)
I've been trying to think of a concert that I have ever enjoyed more and I can't come up with one.
They nailed it on this show, this was 10 out of 10. If you like their music you are going to love them live! Amazing The only downside was no A/C in the Garrick Centre, it was roasting hot in the theatre, and I don't mean a little too warm, saying it was uncomfortable would be an understatment.
My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed Gillian and Dave. They are incredible musicians and have wonderful musical rapport. Stellar!
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings commenced the evening of their own style of music with a haunting new song That's the Way It Goes off their latest CD. From there on in it just got better and better. New and old, every song was great! The crowd joined in on most of their well-known favourites; Miss Ohio, I'll Fly Away, Annabelle, Red Clay Halo, and even one of David's songs, Ruby, off his new CD. Amazing night. Truly the best concert I have ever been to. Here are two extremely talented musicians; so in tune with each other. There is nothing put on or 'music biz' about them. They aren't beautiful; just sincere genuine artists making the most beautiful original music I have heard in a long time. On the downside, it was a standing general admission venue. I would have loved to have seen them in an old theatre like Massey instead. Also, I think the name of the event should have been: An Evening with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
I'd love to review this concert but the fact is, I arrived at the Phoenix around 7:30, handed in my ticket and plunged into the darkness and the crowd, had a mini- anxiety attack, and promptly left. I did not see or hear the concert. I will never again go to anything at the Phoenix, which is a horrible venue, dirty, dank, dark and not very hospitable, especially if a person is not tall. If only I had been aware of this before handing in my ticket, because I would have offered it to someone outside hoping to get in, free of charge. This in no way diminishes my appreciation of Gillian Welch and her music, but I will hope for her to appear at Massey Hall or somewhere where a person has a seat. And note to self: avoid the Phoenix like the plague.
I have been a fan of gillian welch for a while now but even more of a fan of Dave Rawlings. Watching dave play was amazing. Both Gillian and dave complement each other so well and i would recommend this show to anyone.
