About

Green Day redefined punk rock in a post-grunge world. Rising from the Bay Area punk scene in 1987, the band released several EPs before coalescing into their long-standing lineup of vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool. The trio shared the independent album Kerplunk in 1991 before releasing their major label debut Dookie in 1994. Behind singles like “Longview,” “Basket Case” and “When I Come Around,” which each topped the Alternative Airplay chart, Dookie reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Dookie earned Green Day three Grammy nominations, including a win for Best Alternative Music Performance, and the album continues to stand as the band’s best-selling release with over 20 million copies sold worldwide. Green Day followed with 1995’s Insomniac and 1997’s Nimrod, with the latter boasting the band’s biggest creative shift with the rare acoustic single, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” After 2000’s Warning, Green Day spent the next few years developing their first of several ambitious projects, the 2004 punk rock opera American Idiot. The album became Green Day’s first to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and it logged two Top 10 singles with “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” American Idiot garnered seven Grammy nominations and won two, including Best Rock Album. The band won the Best Rock Album Grammy again with 2009’s concept album 21st Century Breakdown. A stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway in 2010 and won two Tony Awards and a Grammy for the cast recording. Furthermore, Green Day were first-ballot inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

  • Amazing!!!!!!!

by Roadrage on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to many concerts in my life and I have to say I was not expecting much from this concert as I bought the tickets so that my 12 year old son could see them(He thinks they are great!) What a great surprise!! There was 5 of us that went together. They were amazing!! They sound just as good live as they do on their CD and they put on a great show. I even enjoyed the opening band The Bravery!! It was especially nice that I could afford to take my whole family as the tickets were very reasonable and I had great seats. Bravo Green Day you have 4 new fans that will return to see another concert!!

  • Better than 2005!!!

    by nodoubter23 on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Green Day were amazing. They're getting older but they're still rocking like they're 20 Years Old. Billie Joe is the ultimate performer. Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt were excellent at supporting the songs and energy level. Freaking awesome live show.

  • Unreal! Green Day is wicked live!

  • On my top 5 list

    by 68Bollinger on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I have enjoyed Green day's music for many years, but had never attended a live performance. The show at the MTS Center blew me away. It was to be a gift to my daughters. My oldest girl, aged 15, is a huge fan. This was both of the girls first concert, and I must say ' The bar has been set mighty high for the next live perfomance the girls see' !. I am a classic rock guy, and have seen many concerts over the years and have many great memories. The showman ship that Billie Joe displayed, and his ability to charge up a room of 7,000 people into getting onto their feet with arms in the air, was a treat for the senses. The pyro, lights, and effects were simply the icing on the cake. Thank you Green day....... I now have 'best Dad in the world' status with my girls!!! And I personally have a whole new appreciation for the band! This concert is definately on my top 5 list.

  • What a great show!

    by dc013 on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Ok, so in the beginning I was on the outside of the pit on the floor. I have a major issue with my sciatica right now and while standing there listening, I couldn't help myself. I got right in there, had a riot. The boys were awesome once again, lived up to everything I had hoped for!

  • Crowd Pleaser

by JEIH on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

I thought that the Green Day concert was great! Played some new and some old. The pyrotechniques were awesome. Most bands do not do this anymore or if they do, it wasn't to the extent that Green Day did. Though I did not expect so many youngsters there. Thank you Green Day for bringing your bunny! I felt that getting the crowd involved with singalongs was great and having fans come up on stage to sing or play along with their songs. That was a plus to see them interact so much with their fans and the crowd. Thank you for coming to Winnipeg.

  • Green Day was amazing

  • Green Day Rocks!!!!

by Azalea on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I can honestly say this was one of the best concerts that I have attended, Green Day definitely does not need a recording studio to sound Great. The pyrotechnics and huge screen were awesome...and the audience interaction only added more fuel to the already firey atmosphere. I would go see Green Day again.....it made my summer : )

  • Finally a band that really tries to perform

by ManiSNOWbaProud on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

What a show! They sounded great, the pyro was fantastic and they really tried to please and entertain the crowd. Finally a band that understands that we paid good money to see them and they seemed sincerely appreciative of it. They really tried to put on the best performance they could. They were passionate about the show. It made it worth twice the amount of admission!

  • Green Day Saves Winnipeg!!

by WinnipegIdiot on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

From the moment Green Day hit the stage, I was on my feet. For the next two hours, they kicked butt. I don't think there was a weak moment during the concert. Green Day is a band that doesn't need an elaborate light show or choreographed dancers to entertain a crowd. They just deliver in-your-face punk. Billie Joe Armstrong is a showman. The pyrotechnics were an added bonus. Great concert!

  • Night of Green

by Heffe on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Wicked show - Definitely impressed by the number of songs they played and they played them well Not so keen on the "Hollywooding" of punk though, bringing the little kids up on stage I'm sure was fun for the kids but seemed a little out of sorts for a punk band and with six guys in the band, it didn't feel as raw as the early days.

  • Green Day rocked my world!

    by Mozgurl28 on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I thought this concert was amazing! The whole experience was great. I loved the background, the lighting, the fire, and how interactive BJ was with the audience. This has got to be one of my favorite shows to date!

  • No Billy Bum!

by Queen on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

Band was energetic and played a tight set, but treated their fans like dancing monkeys. (Asking the crowd to make sex noises?!) Last thing I wanted to see was Billy's bare bottom. Gross. Enough to make me put away the C.D. due to bad memories...

  • Green Day Rocked!!

by Jacmac on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This was my son's first concert so I was hoping it would be entertaining to keep his attention and Green Day delivered. There was no stop action to watch. The light show was awesome and I was really impressed with how much he interacted with the audience. I would definitely go see them again and would reccommend them to anyone. Great job!!!!!!!!

  • Green Day was a force!

by Gerber on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Green Day really mesh together as a solid group and put on a performance like no other. Between water guns, and toilet paper guns, and inviting fans on stage to sing/play Billy Joe's guitar, the energy in the crowd was unreal. Worth the money to go!

  • Green Day!!!

by AdelineInspired on 2009-07-10MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Let me start out this post with saying Green Day is the greatest band in my opinion. But they’re show could have been better. Reason #1 It was Essentially the same show it was five years ago. They should have played more than 7 songs off of their new album rather than relying heavily on past hits and favorites. Warning and Nimrod were neglected, both albums are fantastic and should have had maybe one or two more songs if they were relying on older albums rather than promoting the new one... Reason # 2 and this is the main reason. It was ridiculously predictable, if you own Bullet in a Bible or seen them the last time they were here that was last nights show, , there was minor differences, but Essentially it was the same as that DVD and the 2005 show. Overall though I had a great time Green Day put on a great live show as usual(aside from the two points) One other thing that was dumb(Not Green Day’s fault in anyway) A girl in front of me had long hair not tied up, when your on floor pushed up against the rails please PLEASE be kind and tie your hair up, rather then having it sticking to every sweaty person that has the pain of getting stuck behind you… Oh and YOUR ON FLOOR THERE IS GOING TO BE PEOPLE PUSHING YOU! Although the Bravery has ...a good set, I don't really think they belonged on this tour, it put me at ease rather than pump me up for Green Day. Aren't Openers Supposed to Fire Up The Crowd?

  • Greenday was amazing

as a musician Green Day showed me why I love playing live :) the energy is amazing and how they put that on almost every second night amazes me! the sound, the venue and staff at the MTS Centre also needs applause :)
