James delivered again - a solid performance, top flight entertainment with new songs and old. The band was in fine form; Tim dancing his heart out, Saul prowling the stage like a hungry tiger, Jim trying not to get carried away with the music, Larry beaming celestial joy during his solo pieces. Andy's trumpet carrying the band away and Dave as anchor. Mark, your keyboards are amazing and sometimes lost in the overall outburst of the music; that's a shame as they are a subtle element in some songs that gets overridden, unfortunately. The crowd was constrained by the venue - blue plush seats, very old Toronto. (My mother, now 90, used to come to this theatre - just saying) The evergy was not untrammeled, needless to say, but we did our best, and judging by the sound level, the cheers and hoots; Toronto, we did ourselves proud and gave back to the band as good as they gave us. A night of enthusiasm and keen pleasure - Oh, yes, Toronto, don't lket anyone tell you that you can't rock out! All you need is the right Svengali, and that is James.
Okay, I confess -- I didn't stay for James. I came to see Ed Harcourt, and he was utterly brilliant. Unappreciated, yes, but brilliant. This is a man with multiple albums of Grade A material, fine pop chops and clever-as-all-get-out lyrics singing his heart out, and half the audience was in the lobby getting plastered waiting for James to come on. Harcourt also did a totally entertaining job of simultaneously singing passionately, switching between guitar and keyboard leads, triggering loops and managing sound effects. And the man couldn't even get himself a spotlight when he asked for it! I would have stayed for the band most people came to see, but it would have been like Kraft Dinner after a trip to Morton's for sirloin. Nothing wrong with macaroni, but Ed Harcourt is the real musical meal.
Great show. First off Tim Booth walked down from the where we were sitting and sang "Sit Down" all the while slowly walking up to the stage and greeting fans. He hugged, he danced, and he was so nice. They played some songs of their new album, but played all the hits from their previous albums. When their big hit "Laid"was played he invited about 30 people up to stage to dance. He sang so perfectly. Great stage presence and such a moving performance.
James was better than ever!!! Not the middle-aged singer trying to relive his glory days like so many of the other concerts by eighties and nineties stars. Old favourites and quality new stuff as well.
This James concert "it inspires". Unbelievable stage presence, interaction with the crowd, light show, sound was fantastic. Great choice of songs as well. They played mostly older songs. Can't wait for them to be back in Toronto.
James is by far my favourite band to see live. They put on an excellent show. They engage the audience, they want you to let loose, to actually feel the music. It's an amazing expereince. All of the band members are incredibly talented. I didn't want it to end. Until next time, Thank you James :)
Wow. What a show. These guys are like fine wine, getting better with age. I've seen them 5 times over the years, and this show was amongst the best. They played many of their hits, but they have so many of them that they can't possibly play them all.
James concert is always amazing! He looks into our eyes he can see our soul ....
Welcome back to Toronto, James! A brilliant performance on the stage (and off) at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Thursday night left the crowd cheering, chanting, and always wanting more. While some favourites were left out, a rousing rendition of Laid had the audience on the stage and dancing up a storm. Tim Booth was on fire and sang his heart out. Admitedly, I thought this might be a cash grab for an ageing rock band, but they put on a phenomenal show and were worth every penny. i'd see them again in a heartbeat. Come back soon, James!
