    Magical Experience

by harlene on 2023-09-05UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

Janelle and all the openers were absolutely amazing and beautiful and radiated magical energy to us all through their passionate performances and presence. Just wish that the stage equipment/speakers etc. were not blocking my view of the screen.

Great performance, not such great venue

by Dee on 2023-09-04UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

Janelle Monàe was incredible, always puts on an amazing performance. Great vocals, beautifu staging, awesome openers. The venue though is not the best, the sound was poor and kept echoing around the stadium.

    Great singer.

Great singer. Wish she could be more subtle in costumes and in lyrics.

She was amazing but why Doug Mitchel Thunderbird Stadium?

by NG on 2023-09-04UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

I am not sure why an amazing artist like Janelle was at UBC? She deserved a better venue. The venue was terrible but she made the best of it and rock the house. Her artists were also amazing! No artist should use Doug Mitchel Thunderbird! The echo and acoustic was not great, we are lucky she and her artist were able to rock it the best they can in a bad venue!

Great show from start to finish. Janelle is always great.

    by Ben on 2023-09-04

This was my fourth time seeing Janelle in concert since 2008. She's getting better all the time. She played the best of her new stuff, and some bangers from her older albums. The support acts were all really fun, and the vibe of the whole evening was joyful and positive. The staff in the venue were all really friendly. Janelle finished with Tightrope, which is an unbeatable closing number. Great night all round.

    PHENOMENAL

    by Steph M on 2023-09-03

Janelle Monae is absolutely phenomenal live. She sounds exactly the same as on her albums. I saw her previously when she toured in 2018 in Toronto and this set was just as great as last time. 10/10. I can't wait to see her again in the future!

    This gig had it all

    by TKay on 2023-09-03

Had never seen Janelle Monae live before and she put on a fabulously entertaining show - from vocals, to costumes, to dancing, this gig had it all. Also my first time at the Doug Mitchell UBC venue and it was a good size with good viewpoints from the seats making the concert more intimate feeling than larger venues - crowd was friendly, diverse, and really into the performance- almost everyone stood up and danced throughout. The venue staff were also very friendly and helpful- good washrooms and drink concession service. Highly enjoyable concert.

    Fabulous artist. Lackluster show.

    by Monkeyboyk on 2023-09-03

Janelle Monae is a fabulous, multi-genre artist but I get the sense this show was not indicative of her full capabilities as a live artist. Positives: - Her voice was solid, clear and strong throughout. - Her backup dancers (and singers? Couldn't really tell if they had headsets...). - The background screen was clear and you could even see Janelle's magnetic smile at some points! - The band was tight and the songs were perfectly played. Volume was good enough. - The set list was pulled from across all of her albums. Negatives: (and I feel bad noting these as I adore and respect JM). I also note that the crowd was substantially smaller than I expected - I blame an apparent lack of promotion and perhaps minimal airplay for her latest album. I'm sure it was a let down for her. - The venue was a bit weird for her show. Also, at some point since we purchased tickets, the stage was moved up, changing our view quite a bit; we heard others complaining likewise. - Monae's crowd work was minimal. It seemed like an add on. Even the obligatory encore just blended into the end of the show. - The show was WAY off schedule and the transitions were clumsy. The 8:00 start was late, with a viral hip hop duo who seemed to be doing their first show, a long break and then Jidenna for 20-30 mins. After another dead spot, Monae hit the stage at 10:15 and did about an hour. - For someone with several albums, I'd have expected a longer set list. I hope that other venues give her a better chance to show her talents.

Add this to your concert bucket list ASAP

    by Kelsey57822 on 2018-07-19REBEL - Toronto

I've seen Janelle a few times over the years and she just keeps getting better!! She has that mystical, once-in-a-lifetime talent that we've seen in few artists like MJ and Prince, no exaggeration. She is one of the most incredible performers I have ever had the pleasure of seeing live. She sounds better than her albums, all while dancing her butt off! Incredible! She also has a brilliant way of interacting with the audience and making them feel like they are not simply watching a show, but are actively part of an amazing experience. If you have the opportunity to see this PHENOMENAL WOMAN live, DO IT. Easily one of the best nights of my life. **Sidenote but very important- please check out Wondaland's very own St.Beauty who open for Janelle. They are ethereal and have the most amazing EP out. They really enhanced the night.

    I LIKE THAT!!!!

by Sulty on 2018-07-14The Pageant - St Louis

Had an amazing time. Made it out to st louis to see it plus my family because I was in Atlanta when she comes for her Toronto show. Loved the venue. Just wish there was more room to jam because I feel like PINK was going to be a slumber party style dance party. But couldn't. Haha these were the issues. So obviously... Great show and I'm now a huge fan of St. BEAUTY so thanks for the soft intro.

Janelle and the audience kicked it.

It is like Prince, James Brown and Janet Jackson had a love child and spit her out on stage to Shine. Janelle was so Energetic, Talented and sounded amazing.

I loved the concert and Janelle’s performance. My seats though were too far, and there was very little room.
