    Average Beck

    by G. P. on 2022-10-26Meridian Hall - Toronto

I have seen Jeff Beck numerous times and it has always been magical. He is a superb guitarist and is truly in a class of his own. He always has a great band and has given me numerous musical evenings that I have treasured. Unfortunately this performance was not one of those. It was average to mediocre Beck to the point where you had to wonder if his heart was really in it. He didn’t even introduce his fellow musicians. However, the worst part of the show was the appearance of talentless wannabe Johnny Depp. I was embarrassed for Beck that he was reduced to a sideman for this hack. The 30 odd minutes Depp was on stage were one of the worst musical experiences of my life. Depp can’t sing and he can barely play guitar. I was especially annoyed as I had specifically tried to check before purchasing the tickets that Depp would not be appearing, All in all, an evening to forget. I doubt I will go to see Beck again as it just seems he is only in it for the money and not the music!

    Jeff Beck...confusing show?

    by C. B. on 2022-10-25

Really perplexed by Jeff Beck's show at Meridian Hall on October 17, 2022. What was Jeff Beck thinking going on tour with Johnny Depp? The show overall had a lack of energy. He barely said anything, and if he did, it was inaudible. Nothing like the Beck show I saw at Massey Hall 11 years ago. That show was high energy, he was having fun playing and chatting with the audience and all the songs were extended guitar solo tour de forces. This show had none of that. And strangely, he did edited short versions of some songs almost like he couldn't be bothered to finish them or put in the energy they required. Little Wing barely started before he abruptly ended it. It just felt like his heart wasn't in it. It's unfortunate because his backing band was phenomenal and packed a virtuosic punch. There were many moments of Beck's subtle genius but when Johnny Depp came on stage, the show veered in a weird direction and became a second rate parody. Johnny Depp was 'acting' like a rockstar yet there was a real one on stage. Depp's dated stereotypical rock excess outfit and drunken pirate swagger were funny more than anything. His constant noodling up and down the fretboard and adjusting of tone knobs on his turned down guitar, pretending he was actually playing, was ridiculous, when right beside him was the best guitarist in the world. And his voice was amateur hour at best. Though Depp added some much needed energy, in my opinion, he took a lot away from Beck. Hard to focus on the main attraction when every time Depp was onstage, a horde of varying age women would run to the stage screaming their devotion while throwing their clothes at him. Very odd! And Beck just didn't seem to have it tonight. Maybe it's simply because he's 78, but something was off. I don't get it. I also noticed that when the show was over, he just walked off stage and all the other band members were pointing at him to the crowd kind of like saying, he's the guy, not Johnny Depp.

    good/bad

by airsculptor on 2022-10-23Meridian Hall - Toronto

Jeff Beck was amazing, johnny Depp wasn't my kind of music and he took away from the show. I feel ripped off that Johnny Depp was there as thats another hour or so of Jeff Beck songs I could've heard instead of a poor David bowie imitation.

Beck, with Unexpected Depp Part 2

    by Dadinkley on 2022-10-21

I cannot believe all the over the top reviews...! These people must be writing just to write something. It is very clear that if you truly believe that it was great, you have never been to a Jeff Beck show before, or quite frankly, any rock show... wow...

    Jeff Beck

by LouiseTimothy on 2022-10-21Meridian Hall - Toronto

Jeff Beck was amazing. However he really didn’t need Johnny Depp there but he’s his dear friend. The band was amazing as well with 2 female players, one, the drummer was amazing considering she broke her foot in May and is still recovering. Secondly the bassist can play against and above any of the male bass players in her field. Lastly the keyboard player was top in his field backing up on vocals as well to support Johnny Depps lack of vocal skills that night but kudos Johnny for your take on some old classics and just wanting to have fun. Lastly I want to thank all the staff at Meridian Hall in making our experience a memorable one as I’m in a wheelchair and they seated us in a box of our own so comfortably. Thank you once again, Louise and Timothy🌸

Great show till Johnny Depp came onstage.

by Bill on 2022-10-20Meridian Hall - Toronto

In August I bought tickets for this show thinking it was just Jeff Beck. I’m 72 and a lifelong fan. I saw him 50 years ago at Massey Hall. The first half of this show showcased both Beck's talent and his outstanding bass player, drummer and keyboard player. Then, Johnny Dep comes out shows immediately a total lack of any imaginable musical talent. I overheard people saying it sounded like Bela Logosi trying to sing. The warm up act ( who turned out was recruited by Dep ) could barely play the guitar or harmonica. What happened here! Either Johnny paid Jeff to let him be involved with this tour or Jeff doesn’t care that true music lovers paid money to come see him and then be forced to listen to a musical sham like Johnny Dep.
