JUDY COLLINS IN CONCERT:

Legendary singer-songwriter Judy Collins has lent her iconic voice to an impressive range of genres over her five decade career, from her beloved folk work to acclaimed forays into rock and show tunes. Whether she's taking fans down memory lane with nostalgic performances of "Both Sides, Now" or breaking hearts with "Send in the Clowns," Collins never fails to imbue her material with the wistful romance that makes her performances so moving. Back on the road with a diverse collection of classic material, she is set to stun on her upcoming tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Seattle, Collins grew up studying classical piano under the rigorous tutelage of acclaimed pianist Antonia Brico. After being exposed to folk music in her teens by her radio DJ father, she made a shift towards lyric-based guitar music. Immersing herself in Greenwich Village's folk scene, Collins worked as a street performer and played small clubs before eventually attracting the attention of Elektra Records and releasing her 1961 debut A Maid of Constant Sorrow. While her early albums offered a straightforward folk sound, she branched out on 1966's In My Life, recording songs by artists as diverse as Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel and incorporating lush orchestration -- a bold move for a folk artist at the time.  The stylistic shift proved a success, earning her a Grammy in 1968 for "Both Sides, Now" and setting the tone for much of her later work. Collins continues to be a consummate performer, stunning fans around the world with her continued grace and charm in concert.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"For those of us who remember Judy in the 70's, this was like stepping back in time. Her voice is as beautiful as it was then. Her persona is warm and engaging. What a treat."

"Judy Collins is an amazing talent; and her voice sounds as clear and crisp as it did 50 years ago.
Loved her storytelling and anecdotes too!"

"Cannot believe what a marvelous voice at age 74. A truly spectacular performance by a vital artist!"

Judy Collins voice has improved like fine wine ! Anyone who can sing Danny Boy unaccompanied as Ms Collins did, & get the applause she did, has a fine voice . There was a certain nostalgia to the show , whose audience was mostly aging baby boomers. But a fine performance was put on by Judy Collins , a most memorable concert ! I think a lot of the audience would have liked to hear more of Judy"s oldies , I for one would have liked to hear "Someday Soon "

Enjoyed the show although it was a bit long and tedious at times. She missed several of her big hits in order to provide some historical numbers and promote songs on her new album. Her voice is showing her age but she is still part of music history.

I had never seen Judy Collins before Saturday. I have enjoyed her music for many years and was not disappointed. She still sounds amazing at 70+. The only downfall was she didn't sing 'Both Sides Now' or 'Someday Soon', she probably is tired of singing them all the time. Will definitely see her again, when she returns.

  • Great show!

Really enjoyed the concert. Lots of old songs, some sing-a-long, Collins is funny, quick and charming. Her dialogue during the show very interesting. If I hadn't already read the book, I would have gone right out to get it.

  • Judying e Collins was an exquisite evening.

An exquisite evening of eclectic 60-ish folk music laced with cutting-edge reminiscences and contemporary leftish politics --- just what one would expect from a trouper like Judy Collins. Her voice is still a wonderful and astonishing instrument.

I loved this concert! Judy Collins is as great as ever. I was concerned her voice may not be as free and flexible as it was years ago, but I was really impressed with her range and tone. She was warm and funny and made everyone feel very special. She noted it was unbelievable she hadn't been here before and I concur - so let's please have her back again soon, to sing all of the songs she didn't have time to perform!

  • Judy Collins was fantastic!!!

Sang some older hits as well as some new material. Her voice is still incredibly rich. And it is great how she banters with the audience. She is still living the good life and sharing it with us.

Not just a trip down memory lane for ageing hippies, Judy Collins still has the amazing voice and warm, strong stage presence of her youth. Even better, she is singing songs about things that matter - love and loss, war and peace. She's funny, passionate, self-mocking, and right on politically. Musically brilliant. Don't miss her show!

  • Judy Collins

There are few words I could use to express the beauty of Judy Collin's incredible clear bell like voice. She is surreal and her music lifts you to another sphere. Thank you so much for bringing her to the Arden. It was such a privilege to be able to see Judy right here in St Albert and be so close to this amazing and dynamic star. It was sad that the concert wasn't sold out and many Edmontonians had no idea she was singing here, but would have come to see her. We were just sooooo lucky to have her. One of the very best concerts I've ever attended. I was in tears -- tears of joy. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Louisa52

  • Judy really delivered

by Daven on 2010-11-02Arden Theatre - St AlbertRating: 4 out of 5

She sang non-stop for at least 1.5 hours. Captivating. Her voice was not always perfect but as powerful as ever.
