The multimedia project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums. By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ssoundscapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from electro to hip hop, from techno to synthpop.
In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert, Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.
Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. Bringing together music and perfomance art, their 3-D concerts are a true "Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.” The concert series at the MoMA was - among others - followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London, Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo, the Opera House in Sydney, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The crowd were mostly like me, 40-50 something white guys, there was a hum of anticipation in the lobby and it built in the theatre waiting for the show. No opening act, lights down and sound creeping up. They played all my old faves, 'neon lights' 'the model' Trans Europe Express' man machine etc, I think they played that whole album, and a few I didn't know, some of the extended plays were fun, I liked the looping back to 'tour de France' , The 3D was so -so from my balcony seat, but the sound was great. And the sound is what it was about !
Good performance, great show and interesting. Unpleasant moment: security have not reacted fast enough as one person from the crowd jumped on the stage and grabbed Kraftwerk leader and removed his headphones. Stupid act. Another annoying thing: people were moving back and forth thru rows because beer was served thru entire show. I love beer but also love unspoiled performance. On stadium? Who cares? Want more beer than a gallon? Do not buy sitting space. Stand in the back, do not bother others...
The show was amazing... in 3D.Kraftwerk a band that was way ahead of it's time.
I am so glad I was able to see Kraftwerk again. The first time was in 1983 when technology was very much a sci-fi future thing. Time has flown by and it is clear that Kraftwerk were revolutionary in their music back in the 80's but their music more than stands the test of time. The visuals in 3D were fantastic especially the computer code swirling around in "Computer world". Can't say enough good things.
Kraftwerk programmed their home computer and beamed the concert experience into the future.
This was an amazing event!! Kraftwerk still manages to totally mesmerize an entire crowd. I saw them at Convocation Hall (U of T) in the early 80's, and I'm glad they have not tried to "update" their music in any way. The acoustics and sound equipment were exceptional, and the incredible 3D effects just took this band to yet a higher level, which I would not have though possible. I feel sorry for the folks outside that could not find tickets to this sold out event.
