About

The multimedia project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.  They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.  By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ssoundscapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations.  With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century.  Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from electro to hip hop, from techno to synthpop.

In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert,  Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. Bringing together music and perfomance art, their 3-D concerts are a true  "Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.”  The concert series at the MoMA was - among others - followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London, Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo, the Opera House in Sydney, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

by Rhythum67 on 2015-09-19Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The imagination of these ole timers are amazing! They are young at heart, but know how to move and perform a 3 D light show like no other.I'm so glad I went and was amazed at how many different ages of people were there.I read about it in the Edmonton journal. These boys are the founders of techno. They need to be heard more.

    Blew my mind

This was a show by the electronic fan's Superbowl winner. They were direct, interesting, classic and cutting edge. The lights and backdrop were excellent and it was 3D.

An amazing once in a lifetime experience!!!

by clhphoto on 2014-07-06Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I first heard the German group, Kraftwerk back in the mid-1970s, via their AM radio hit, "Autobahn". Their pioneering use of electronic instruments and 'motorik-rhythms' set the course for other artists to follow, including David Bowie, Devo, Gary Numan, Ultravox, Depeche Mode, and many other artists in diverse genres of music. It was a once in a lifetime chance to experience them live in concert, which was enhanced by the dazzling sound and visuals. My only disappointment was that, there was NO available merchandise (T-Shirts, CDs, LPs) to purchase after the show.

    Kraftwerk Delivers

by Vlad2 on 2014-07-06Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

There is something in Kraftwerk that is eternal. How, otherwise, to explain that their music appeals to their contemporaries, as well as to the bunch of people who never heard of them, yet they came to the 3D concert, since somehow they got the ticket. Kraftwerk, in English 'the Power Plant', has a strong artistic concept that they are keeping strong for decades. Their source is coming from the minimalistic electronica music from 60s, ever lasting German expressiveness by reduction of forms, so nicely represented by Bauhaus, and the performance as art, which was recently so epitomized by Marina Abramovich. The 3D concert series was developed at the time when the 3D TV entered our home, and it is a natural continuation of the Kraftwerk's comment on the social structure dictated by the technology that infiltrates our lives. Concert has a strong delivery, legendary precision, rhythm of electronic persuasions and bass that positively resonates within you, somewhere around your hart, old songs that are coherent, and 2 hours of pure synthetic energy as crated by four German demiurgs of electronic music. Great work, I would like to meet them again.

Pionneers of electro music with 3D background

by Pibo on 2014-04-02Métropolis - Montreal

Great venue... Metropolis was packed! Brought me back to my teen years when I just started going night clubbing. The crowd in general was over forty and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The young puppies of today would not believe that this electro music existed in the mid ' 70s. And the 3D screen was a plus; added another dimension to the quatuor... Really happy I was there.

    the werks

by jimmijass on 2014-04-01Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The crowd were mostly like me, 40-50 something white guys, there was a hum of anticipation in the lobby and it built in the theatre waiting for the show. No opening act, lights down and sound creeping up. They played all my old faves, 'neon lights' 'the model' Trans Europe Express' man machine etc, I think they played that whole album, and a few I didn't know, some of the extended plays were fun, I liked the looping back to 'tour de France' , The 3D was so -so from my balcony seat, but the sound was great. And the sound is what it was about !

    Great experience

by Stapio on 2014-04-01Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Good performance, great show and interesting. Unpleasant moment: security have not reacted fast enough as one person from the crowd jumped on the stage and grabbed Kraftwerk leader and removed his headphones. Stupid act. Another annoying thing: people were moving back and forth thru rows because beer was served thru entire show. I love beer but also love unspoiled performance. On stadium? Who cares? Want more beer than a gallon? Do not buy sitting space. Stand in the back, do not bother others...

    amazing show!!!

by TaxMaam on 2014-04-01Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I am so glad I was able to see Kraftwerk again. The first time was in 1983 when technology was very much a sci-fi future thing. Time has flown by and it is clear that Kraftwerk were revolutionary in their music back in the 80's but their music more than stands the test of time. The visuals in 3D were fantastic especially the computer code swirling around in "Computer world". Can't say enough good things.

    Kraftwerk 3D

by AnnieMac on 2014-03-29Sony Centre for the Performing Arts - Toronto

This was an amazing event!! Kraftwerk still manages to totally mesmerize an entire crowd. I saw them at Convocation Hall (U of T) in the early 80's, and I'm glad they have not tried to "update" their music in any way. The acoustics and sound equipment were exceptional, and the incredible 3D effects just took this band to yet a higher level, which I would not have though possible. I feel sorry for the folks outside that could not find tickets to this sold out event.
