The grand British musical tradition of trip hop, popularized in the ‘90s by acts like Portishead and Tricky, is alive and well in 2013 with the success of trip hop trio London Grammar. Just a few months after being featured on Disclosure’s No. 1 album Settle, London Grammar released their debut full length If You Wait in September 2013 to critical acclaim and a No. 2 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Drawing comparisons to Florence Welch for her throaty, brooding vocals, singer Hanna Reid is a commanding presence on the album, delivering her emotionally affecting lyrics over the trip hop beats and dreamy guitarscapes of bandmates Dot Major and Dan Rothman. The album’s four singles include UK Top 40 hits “Strong” and “Wasting My Young Years,” a breakup song featuring Reid’s signature plaintive vocals. Earlier in the year, the band released their debut EP Metal & Dust, which featured the hit single “Hey Now.” On the road in 2013, the band has been wowing ticket buyers with their intimate arrangements and emotionally-charged live concerts, building anticipation for their first US tour in 2014.

Simply awesome! Second time was just as good as the first.
The show was absolutely amazing ! Her voice was amazing :-)
Amazing! what a great live show. All the songs translated even better than I could've imagined live.
Pros: Hannah. Very unique "Wall of Light" lightshow. Polished performance, sounds exactly like on their albums. (Contrary to what a different reviewer posted after LG's first album, their YouTube videos *do* do them justice, and more. In particular, no live performance of "Big Picture" could come close to their video for the song.) Cons: Seemed to be a lot of pre-recorded/pre-sequenced backing tracks (not just loops created live), esp. on the beats and bass (-1 star). Other bands hire additional musician(s) on tour to cover such parts. Also, the show ended at 10:30, after only 13 songs (-1 star)! Never seen a headliner stop before 11 pm before, in any venue. Both NYC and Paris got 14 songs.
Super talented 3 piece who don't need the flashy set. The music spoke for itself and echoed in my ears for hours!
This band is excellent live! Hannah Reid's voice is like no other. Sultry and beautiful. London Grammar will give you shivers and shake you to the core. They are young and so talented. I cannot wait to see how this band matures and grows! Talent + original sound = Quite the winning combo! The Sound Academy is not a great venue for this kind of moody, intimate band. The venue is so large, it's hard to see and get close. I am quite sorry that the show originally set for the Danforth Music Hall was cancelled and rescheduled for the Sound Academy.
They sounded amazing. Exactly like their album. Crisp. Hannah's voice is ridiculous. I would say this type of music warrants a place like Massey Hall Toronto wise. Sound Academy was packed and somewhat annoying. Otherwise all good.
They were simply amazing at the Sound Academy in Toronto 2 days ago! Her voice does not disappoint. The opening act, Before the Ribbon Breaks was surprisingly really good. After seeing some stuff on youtube I wasn't too impressed, but they are a completely different group live. Their youtube videos do not do them justice! Had such a great vibe from this show, can't wait till London Grammar is back in Toronto!!
The main performer did not disappoint, but I didn't really get the performance of the opening act.
Disappointing that the aptly named Vancouver Sleep Clinic didn't make it to the show. I didn't feel the support band (whose name I didn't catch) was ready to play the Commodore. Hannah Reid of London Grammar is the real thing when it comes to her voice. The band leaves a lot to be desired in terms of stage presence though their lack of polish is charming in its own way. Although the sparse arrangements were very effective for the most part, there were times when a 4th member of the band (bass/keys/vocals) would have been a welcome way to fill out the sound.
