About
Mexico City garage-punk outfit Los Blenders have been building momentum since 2015 through prolific recording, U.S. touring, high-profile festival dates, and critical acclaim (Remezcla called them "the next great Mexican garage band" in 2017).
Originally formed in 2011, Los Blenders comprises Alejandro Archundia on vocals and guitar, Osmar Espinosa Cigarroa on bass and backing vocals, José Manuel Martínez on the drums, and Patricio González on guitar. Their first EP, Oye, came out in 2011. Los Blenders released their debut LP, Chavos Bien, in 2015. Chavos Bien landed the band on KEXP-FM's list of top 10 best alternative albums in Spanish. The band also memorably collaborated with will.i.am for Corona's "Discover Your Music" campaign.
Los Blenders have been steadily releasing albums since their 2015 debut. In 2018, they put out their sophomore album, Ha Sido, which reached almost 4 million streams and brought the band to major festivals such as Coachella that same year.
In 2020, Los Blenders released their Mazunte 2016 LP, which their label Devil In The Woods called "a more elaborate and mature composition."
"I think that this one has more of a whole-album vibe," Archundia told American Songwriter of Mazunte. "It goes from beginning to the end. The last album, I think, was more like a collage. It had different ideas, like we wanted to do a really '80s rock and roll song and we did it; we wanted to do a punk song and we did it; we wanted to do a ballad and we did it. So it was just more of a collage idea, and this is more of a complete album."
Archundia added: "I think the whole idea of the new record is a whole day -- when the sun comes out to the night and then the morning again. The end of the album is more of a post-punk sound but with a Mexican influence. There is this band called Rock en tu Idioma, from the '80s. They are huge in Latin America -- the biggest rock bands in Latin America came out in that era. There is Soda Stereo, Caifanes, and some other bands from Spain. All the bands from La Movida Madrileña. We have a lot of that in the end of the record. There are three of four songs that have that vibe that we haven't tried before and it's a little bit darker. Our songs are usually really poppy and happy, and these ones are a bit more grim and dark."
In 2021, Los Blenders released a live version, Mazunte 3016 (En Vivo).
