About

Maxwell is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Composing music since he was just 17, the Brooklyn native’s discography is a sprawling testament to his musical prowess. At 23, his debut record, 1996’s Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and eventually hit double platinum status. Since then, Maxwell has been credited — along with Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu — with ushering in the neo-soul movement and its sensibilities into mainstream popular music during the late 1990s. Over the course of his career, Maxwell has won three Grammy Awards, six Soul Train Music Awards and two NAACP Image Awards, in addition to having multiple Billboard Hot 100 and 200 charting tracks. He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Congressional Black Caucus in 2019 for "his innovative contributions to the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and producer."

  • Maxwell concert was beautiful

    by Fan1010 on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

This concert was one of the better one's I've gone to all year! Chrisette Michelle seemed to be a bit timid & didn't move at all throughout her set... let's just say, she was not good :( Her songs may have been sung well but her lack of movement around the large stage, took away some of her performance. Common - hands down a gr8 hip-hop performer. He had the crowd pumped & bounded around the stage engaging the entire audience. His DJ was crazy good! Definitely knows how to get the crowd going!! But the main performer that every1 came to see - MAXWELL- he definitely knows how to build a performance that left the concert-goers (most female) wanting more. He did say he had a sore throat - and you did hear a couple of times that it went out - but definitely did not put a damper on his entire performance!! U actually didn't notice it & when he opened his mouth to hit those high notes, to make all the ladies swoon - u forgot about him saying he had a sore throat. Definitely he sund all the classics: Fortuate, A Womans work - and he had every1 singing along with every note :) :) Always the ladies pleaser he ensured to grab hands & touch faces. The concert was FABULOUS!!!!

  • Maxwell was breathtaking

Maxwell was by far the best concert ever. The soul, the passion, his being was incredible. I left feeling so fulfilled. I adore Maxwell.

  • UN-Fortunate

by Karus on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Maxwell apologized many times during the concert for the hoarseness in his voice. He wasn't feeling well and it showed through in his performance. Yes, I admire his determination to go through with the concert - but I wasn't engaged because he delivered a spotty performance that night. There were several moments my boyfriend and I couldn't even make out what he was singing because his band overwhelmed his voice. We also noticed that he faded in and out of many of the more challenging runs in his songs. And so, I may very well buy another pair of tickets to watch him when he's back in town, in better condition, and at a smaller venue. On another note, Chrisette Michele and Common were OFF-the-hook!

  • He was amazing

by Timarie on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I'm trying to figure out if there is another city I can get to just to see the show again. Anytime he comes back I'm there.

  • AMAZING!!!

by DoubleJJ on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutly unbelievable...best concert ever! The entire crowd was into it, Common was spectacular as well and got the crowd excited! Great time! He is truly a performer! Looking forward to seeing him again.

  • Should have rescheduled

by cutclose on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

I've seen Maxwell in concert so I know how great he can be. I saw him last year at Massey Hall and it was amazing. This year I was disappointed that he performed at a venue like the ACC. The sound doesn't travel well in that arena. In additional to that, his voice was not up to par and I honestly think he should have rescheduled if he was losing his voice. I walked away from that concert underwhelmed.

  • Maxwell did an amazing job!

by Dimplez on 2009-09-28Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The opening acts got the crowd excited and when Maxwell came on stage, he tore it up. Amazing voice and even though his voice was horse, he still finished the concert and he was having way too much fun that he didnt want to leave. The crowd was loving him and he was loving Toronto! Great performer and he definitely knows how to put on a show! Amazing! :)

  • Maxwell came with it!

by ShadyDoc on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing...one of the best concerts i've ever been to! Even with a slightly hoarse voice, Maxwell put on an unbelievable show...and sang a lot of the old joints, for the true fans!

  • The Summer's night was 100 degrees plus!!!!

by fashionprivilege on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I loved Mawell's concert.!!!! This was my first time at a Maxwell concert. my cousin and her best friend had gone once before I loved it at Massey Hall. I missed the opening act...Common was ok, usual I would be very excited to see him but it was all about Maxwell this time. As soon a Maxwell entered the stage the crowd did not stop screaming until the moment he left. Even with a slightly horse voice, he was AMAZING. He put on a great show, go comfy with the crowd and was very humbled by the reception he rececived in Toronto, that made me appreciate him even more. He was none stop and I was standing for the complete 2 hours and bit. Any Maxwell fan would love this live performance and it def. is a must see.....Would do it again in a second.

  • Maxwell was amazing ... and very sexy!

by daynaG on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell is the definition of sexy between his look, his style AND his music! He has a very distinctive sound and his voice can carry itself across an entire stadium! He sang some classics like Dance Wit Me and Get To Know Ya! Love his new album as well ... Pretty Wings live was amazing, as was Stop the World. I've seen him in concert 4 times now and i'll keep seeing him EVERY TIME he comes back to Toronto!! I have to say though, not a huge fan of the ACC as a venue for his type of sound. I prefer a more inimate setting like Massey Hall or Roy Thomson Hall.

  • Maxwell was beyond amazing

  • Maxwell was Amazing!!!!

by Tashani on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Sexy, soulful and sultry - What more could you want from him! His personality really came out in his performance too! He thanked not only us,-his adoring fans- but his talented backup band. They were a truly talented group. Even with a hoarse voice, he came out and gave us his all. And we gave back - filling in when his voice failed. We didn't care - to us, he was still Maxwell and we love him! That's right - I think it's safe to say that T dot loves Maxwell! I can't wait till he comes again!

  • Maxwell Common Performance

by Simplesam on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Maxwell was good but has a his voice go once or twice during his performance. It was not too bad - but definitely noticeable in one of his tracks. He was great in that he sang a fair amount of new and old tracks and sent great vibes throughout the ACC. Considering he is not as performance is more music oriented rather than performance oriented (like an Usher) he did a great job. I missed the first opening act Chrisette Michelle but was very excited to see Common in a stadium setting. He was great but looked somewhat awkward seeing people in seats rather than a general admission environment. He was great but did not sing any of his older stuff, just his more widely known (newer) tracks to appeal to an audience that may not be so familiar with him.

  • Still SMILING from Ear to Ear... SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!

by Carlette on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell's performance at the ACC was UNFORGETABLE and I enjoyed EachHourEachSecondEachMinute. I have been LONGING to see Maxwell in concert ever since I missed his show at Massey Hall last year, so I was OVERJOYED when I heard that TORONTO would be the first stop for his BLACKsummers'night Tour. Rehearsing for 2 weeks, 14 hours a day can put a strain on one's voice, but I'm happy that instead of cancelling the show (which would have BROKEN my heart), Maxwell pulled through and gave his best effort for the fans. At times the band (which was amazing) over powered his vocals and it was difficult to listen to him struggle with his voice and watch him fidget with his earpiece, but these were only small kinks that will be worked out. The performance in the end was still SEXY and I could not keep my eyes off of him. Hopefully he will make it back to Toronto on the next tour and KILL IT for us. I was a little disappointed that he did not sing "Whenever, Whereever, Whatever", but I did LOVE every other song that he did sing. My favourites were BAD HABITS, STOP THE WORLD, COLD, PRETTY WINGS, TILL THE COPS COME KNOCKIN', and of course THIS WOMAN'S WORK. Maxwell is a BEAUTIFUL and talented artist with a BEAUTIFUL essence and I wish the concert never had to end. Toronto had a lot of LOVE to show Maxwell and he truly seemed grateful.

  • Great show overall

    by Leo99 on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Considering he had a sore throat it was a great performance, Common was a good way to get the fans hyped up for Maxwell Would definately see common when he comes to tow again.

  • Maxwell was da bomb!

    by Jenny5 on 2009-09-27Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

OMG! Common and Maxwell tore down the house. Common took it back old skool and had the crowd going. Maxwell- even with his sore throat, he managed to swoon even the men! It was so beautiful. It was as if he was singing to you one on one.

  • Simply Beautiful

    by Crissy25 on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

This artist has always been one of my favorites of all time, true to his style he never disapoints with any of his performances and this event was no exception. It was clear that he didn't have the best of voice that night, but like the performer that he is it never stopped him from singing his heart out and entertaining his fans. Can't wait until the next album drops. Keep it up MAXWELL.

  • He tore it up even while being hoarse!!!

by Allannah on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I LOVE MAXWELL!!!!!!!!!! The show was amazing!!! The opening was a slow groove and you could just feel the energy in the place....we were all DYING to see Maxwell sing his way into our hearts. The show was a great balance between all of his albums...he got hearts racing with "Stop the World" and "Till the Cops Come Knockin'". Unfortunately he was very hoarse...but let me tell you....he sang "This Woman's Work" like nobody's business!! He must have felt like crap with his voice messed up but never let it on...he put on a fantastic show. This is a man who loves his fans equally as much as they love him...so gracious and humble. Never leave us for that long again Maxwell....Toronto definitely loves them some Maxwell!!!

What can I say? Maxwell....his concert was truly amazing! I first saw him perform in Toronto in 2001 & once again i went back to Toronto to see him again. Maxwell is an amazing artist & his 7 yr hiatus was WELL worth the wait. I would see him again & again.
