About

Maxwell is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Composing music since he was just 17, the Brooklyn native’s discography is a sprawling testament to his musical prowess. At 23, his debut record, 1996’s Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and eventually hit double platinum status. Since then, Maxwell has been credited — along with Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu — with ushering in the neo-soul movement and its sensibilities into mainstream popular music during the late 1990s. Over the course of his career, Maxwell has won three Grammy Awards, six Soul Train Music Awards and two NAACP Image Awards, in addition to having multiple Billboard Hot 100 and 200 charting tracks. He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Congressional Black Caucus in 2019 for "his innovative contributions to the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and producer."

  • Maxwell:Soulful and seductive!!!

    by Coco25 on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was amazing considering the fact that his voice was hoarse. He clearly put much effort in this concert and for that he deserves an applause. If the circumstances where different I would give him 5 stars because I know he is capable of so much more. However, Maxwell is still extremely talented, nice to look and can make any women’s heart melt. I would love to see him again when his vocal cords are at his best.

  • Maxwell Concert was amazing...

    by ST23 on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

It started off with a sultry performance of 3 numbers by Chrisette Michelle. She got the crowd warmed up for what was in store. Common followed that with a performance of hits and a hip hop medley that rocked the crowd. Maxwell was amazing that was evident by the number of under garments that were thrown on stage.

ALL three artists - Chrisette Michelle, Common and Maxwell - we AMAZING! Although Chrisette's set was a litlle short - a small taste of that strong and beautiful voice would make you want to go see her!! Common - WOW - a TRUE ARTIST overlooked. He can freestyle to any beat and make it his own. And, well, Mr. Maxwell.....SEXY! SEXY! SEXY! (Well, so is Common;) )....Maxwell eludes the same sexiness in his maners as in his voice....give me chills! Great Show!

  • Maxwell didn't disappoint

    by renee20 on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Maxwell 3 of the 4 times he has been in Toronto - I heard about the 4th show too late. Despite being ill, he pulled off another masterpiece. He embraces the audience and loves the stage. Looking forward to his next album and his next visit to the T-Dot!

  • Maxwell is amazing live

by KareninToronto on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I last saw Maxwell about 10 years ago at the Hummingbird Centre and his show was amazing then, and it's just as good today. It's less intimate having it at the ACC, but more visual effects and all that, if you like that sort of thing. He sang only a few songs from his new album, which was surprising. The focus was more on the older songs we all know and love. He only sang for 1.5 hours, which is a solid amount of time, but I would've appreciated even just 10 minutes more, in the encore for example (he only sang one song in the encore)

  • The Concert of the Year!!

by Taye on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell MUST come back next year again. That was the best concert. Thorougly enjoyable and well worth the money!! I love the audience interaction with Maxwell and the vibe was just nice! I'll definitely be going again.

  • Maxwell is a true showman

by BonitaAmplebum on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Chirsette Michelle was a great opening act; if you are a fan you won't be disappointed, she is an amazing talent. Common was the following act and he certainly continued the crowds enthusiasm. For anyone who loves oldschool hip hop you will appreciate Commons homage to the genre. And last but not least Maxwell, if ever there was a performer it is Maxwell. He genuinely performed like he wanted to be there and his performance reflected that. Although he had a sore throat he kept going, it gave his audience the opportunity to join him during parts of the songs. Don't miss this show, it's in its early stages but i know it will get better and better.

  • BLACKsummer'snight

by reeshlightning on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell's BLACKsummers'night was the most incredible concert I have ever been too. Not only is he great talent , but he knows how to entertain and captivate his audiences. All to the point where one grown woman ran up and on stage to grab him, and had to be escorted off by security. Even when he started losing his voice, Maxwell kept belting out the hits and even came back out for an encore song when the stadium cheered him back on.

  • definetly sexy and talented

    by 2cute on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I will always believe his srongest fan base is here in Toronto hence the SOLD OUT SHOW. Show was great and this is only the begining of an amazing tour.

  • Welcome back Maxwell!

by MarquisMark on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

It's been an 8 year hiatus since Maxwell released an album of new material. He graced Toronto last October at Massey Hall, but last night's concert was his first stop in support of the Billboard-topping Black Summer's Night cd. His soulful, emotion-laden renditions of "This Woman's Work" and "Fortunate" had the crowd on their feet. New material such as "Fistful of Tears" and "Bad Habits" were well-received by a crowd that hung on his every note and hip gyration. Pretty Wings and Ascension were of course the showstoppers, with a sold out Toronto audience singing every word by heart. There were some technical glitches that detracted from an otherwise brilliant performance - at some points the musicians seemed to drown out out Maxwell's vocals. Maxwell was also apologetic about his voice becoming a little hoarse halfway through the show. Admittedly, this was Maxwell's first attempt at an arena-sized venue. In my opinion, his soulful, stirring vocals are more suited to a smaller, more intimate stage, but he was fantastic all the same.

  • Maxwell Magic!

by Raintree on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Just went to the Maxwell concert last night at the ACC. I'm still on a "high" from his performance. I've never seen him live in a concert before but I can tell you, it was an evening I will never forget. Even though he had a problem with his voice, he still sounded amazing and his band and stage set-up were top notch. I must say that the females were loosing their mind from the moment he entered the stage! Can't wait for him to return to Toronto again- will definitely be buying another ticket.

  • Maxwell was a sexy show!

by fashionbabe on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Maxwell was a good show but it could've been a great show if his voice was not hoarse. He did give it 110% despite his voice giving out. I would love to see Maxwell again with his voice at its best so that we can really hear how great he can be especially on classics like "This Woman's Work."

  • Maxwell, the best concert so far

by Nathy on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

His concert was so deep, amazing in every way. The music he sings is one of a kind. No singer will ever be able to sing love songs like he does . I would definitely go see him again and again and again..........

  • CONCERT OF THE CENTURY!!!!!!! WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

by missharmonie on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell is a stellar musican! Even with a hoarse voice his singing was incredible. And I so appreciated the way he engaged the crowd. That alongside his genuine humility is what made the concert so unforgettable. He sang old and new his hits and did not miss one note or beat. Maxwell definitely proved that he is here to stay. His songs are honest and thought provocating, and the realness in his lyrics are what makes him great because he says things through his songs that men feel but usually won't say outloud to their girfriends. I bought floor seats and it was worth every penny! I even got to run my fingers through his hair! Bottom line, Maxwell concerts are not to be missed!!! 10 stars all the way!!!! Can't wait for the next Toronto show and I'll be buying front row again!!!

  • Maxwell is amazing

    by Marsha008 on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Maxwell was amazing. He had so much engery and worked so hard at ensuring the concert goers had the best time possible. His voice was horse but he didnt give up. When he sang Woman's Worth and was struggling through it because of his voice I thought he would just stop but instead he did his best and finished the song beautifully. I will be paying top dollar everytime Maxwell comes to Toronto. It was a great night for music in Toronto and I still feel so blessed to be one of a a few thousand that got to witness true performers passionate about their craft. Just to add...Common and Maxwell are two very fine men.

  • Maxwell's show was amazing!

by Breannejm on 2009-09-26Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Chrisette Michele and Common's performances were the perfect segue to Maxwell's performance. The band was amazing and he really interacted with the crowd. He appeared to be a little under the weather but he didn't let that stop him from performing all of my favourites! I wish him all the best on the rest of the tour and hope he visits Toronto again soon.
