Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2002-2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired. Overall, the Wild has qualified for the Playoffs 13 times in its history.

    Wild vs Islanders

by Shere on 2014-01-06Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

We had seats in the upper bowl but completely enjoyed the game, other than the fact that the Wild lost :-(

    Best seats I've ever had!

by Rocker1972 on 2014-01-03Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

I love hockey and our seat were great, 3 rows from the glass. We went to an NFL, NBA Ann NHL game on our trip. The price of our seats were about the same for each event, but this game had by far the best seats.

Great arena, great atmosphere and great game. Loud foul mouthed fan ruined the 1st two periods for us but once he was talked to he settled down.

Xcel Centre - great place to watch a hockey game

by Bobbyo4 on 2013-10-13Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

The Xcel Centre offers a state of art venue to watch a pro game. Much nicer than the small AHL sized arena in Winnipeg. The Xcel Centre has wide concourses and a greater variety of food options than other rinks. I would definitely go again.

    Wild game

by Nancytags on 2013-10-08Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

Attended the Wild vs Ducks game on Oct. 5. Venue was awesome! We had club seats at the chair rail so really accessible to washrooms and food. Good view of the ice. The only complaint I have would be the cold air that was blowing down on us.

    Teriffic staff

by DMill on 2013-03-29Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

I came from outside Winnipeg MB Canada to Minniapolis Minnisota for a number of reasons. One of the main ones was to see the Minnesota Wild play the Pheonex Coyotes. My son became ill and unfortunately threw up on 2 ocassions. 1 while we were in our seats and a second as we were trying to exit the building at the end of the seond period. Staff were very curtious, concerned for my son and helpful to us all. I can't thank them enough for making a very disappointing and embarressing situation for my sons and I into one that at least left us feeling greatfull for the help, kindness and concern of the excellent staff.

Great Night Out For A Family

by Anonymous on 2013-03-17Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

Though it was pricey (to be expected at an event), the atmosphere was great and staff were super friendly. I love the small size of the arena and find it is quite clean compared to other arenas. One of my fave places to watch an NHL game.

A nothing game for the Wild!

by oldwill on 2012-04-09Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

...and they treated it just like that. A full house of dedicated fans deserved a better effort than that before their boys hit the golf course.

I'm not sure my review would be as good had the Jets not won, but since they did, we has a fabulous time!!

Was disappointed that the vocalist missed a line of the O Canada anthem which caused the Jets fans to boo at the end of the song and into the start of the American anthem, otherwise it was great. Had a good time and the Wild fans were gracious host fans.

    Awesome to see the Jets

by charlag on 2012-02-18Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

Went to watch the Jets because it's almost impossible to get tickets in Winnipeg. It seems like we weren't the only ones because there were a few thousand Jets fans. The venue is beautiful and friendly staff and wild fans lol made some new friends

1st NHL game for my kids

by Manitobacanuck on 2012-02-15Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul

Our view was pretty close to spectacular - the camera guy's platform would have been in our way if we had been one seat over. We were able to go down to the glass for the pre-game skate. My son was thrilled to have the Canucks tap his hands as they got on the ice. Refillable popcorn for $8.50 a pail is a great deal if you're going with a bunch. We were pleasantly surprised that our transit bus was free because we were going to the game.
