Hannah Georgas sets the mood for Mother Mother
by Chris89w on 2012-12-21Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5Mother Mother's stage matched the energy of their songs from the minute the lights went down. Fog machines allowed lights to beam across the entire stage and room from behind Jasmin and Molly's keyboards surrounding them in aura. Additional light beams climbed the walls of the Orpheum behind them and slowly descended over the crowd accompanying the blast of harmonious, keyboard infused guitar riffs.
Songs transitioned flawlessly, transferring the energy from classics "Body of Years" and "The Stand" to new material such as "Bit by Bit" as if they were off the same album. Their setlist hit it home, to which the last performance of this tour took place, with hits "The Sticks", "O My Heart", "Simply Simple", "Let's Fall in Love", and the fan favourite: "Wrecking Ball" tying up the encore.
Ryan's verbal interludes spoke philosophically of enjoying life with what we have available to us and making the best of each situation; a message probably overlooked by the many younger fans in the crowd. Something understood by everyone was his discussion about bullying which ended with the dedication of "Little Pistol" to Amanda Todd.
Hannah Georgas, also rising in Vancouver's music scene surprised listeners with songs off her new self titled album. I thoroughly enjoyed the live arrangements of her songs but was disappointed with the overpowering bass that out levelled her bold, driving lyrics. Joining Mother Mother back on stage for an encore performance of "Love it Dissipates" was a treat.
