About

Finding the box in which to place singer-songwriter Neko Case has proven perplexing for the Grammy Awards poobahs, and just about everyone else. She released her acclaimed seventh solo album in 2013 -- titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You -- and promptly earned a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Her preceding set, 2009's Middle Cyclone, earned the Alexandria, Va., native a nomination in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. With her tendency to write folk-based songs with a bit of a loping beat, she's often refereed to as an Americana or alt-country artist, but her sound fits just as comfortably in the indie-rock singer-songwriter category. Further complicating matters is Case's longtime status as a member of Canadian indie supergroup The New Pornographers, with whom she's been known to belt out power-pop tunes.

Whatever you call her style, Case is a hit with fans and critics alike thanks to her poignant songwriting and her distinctive, smoky voice, which shines in concert. It's a combination that has fans flocking to buy tickets to see her on tour, where she's put the focus on the music while eschewing trappings like costume changes and fancy set designs.

Neko at the Orpheum - meh.

by JerriBlank on 2013-09-24Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I've seen Neko Case a couple of times, so was psyched about seeing her again after seven years. Turns out this was the last show of the tour, and it showed. It felt like they raced through their set, and were looking forward to the break. She played for exactly one hour before heading off and the obligatory encores (I happened to glance at my watch and noticed it was exactly one hour -- made me think there was a clock on stage by the guitar pedals or something.) The crowd called out a couple requests which were soundly ignored -- seems like if you're done with the tour and landing in a friendly town like Vancouver, maybe you could deviate from the setlist for one night? Bottom line: bare minimum effort from the band, no joy or highlights in the performance. Completely forgettable

    Great voice crap sound!!

    by God7father on 2013-09-24Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Neko's voice is a wonderful instrument and I was looking forward to hearing it in all it's strength and raw emotion. Unfortunately, her voice was lost in a wash of reverb! She sounded like she was singing in a an echo chamber. Even when talking it was hard to make out what she was saying. Not sure if it was the venue or the soundman but really diminished the enjoyment of the night.

    Neko, a case of dissapointment

by Anonymous on 2011-12-30Bronson Centre - Ottawa

A big practice session before an audience that paid for a show. Constantly and annoyingly tuning instruments and blabbing inside jokes nobody understood. The band members looked blasés as if they we thinking, is she going to shut up and start playing (or tuning that guitar). Never again!

    Felt more like a rehearsal

by Binkyrem on 2011-12-10Bronson Centre - Ottawa

Soooo disappointing. Next time Neko Case wants to rehearse and use her audience as guinea pigs, I'll stay home. There's a fine line between casual and sloppy. Too bad. We deserve better.

Neko Case - poor stage presence (Ottawa)

by dinerboy on 2011-12-09Bronson Centre - Ottawa

OMG I have never seen a musician so flustered and jittery on stage. Too much substance use? She gestured wildly to the side-stage mgr every second song in first hour (sound problems), and stomped off stage on 4 occasions to give someone some attitude. She publicly dissed 2 of the four male musicians on the stage (who generally refused to look at her the rest of the set, and neglected to introduce the band. !! It was the female vocalist who took over as the stage presence, and it was she who finally introduced the band - at the end of the last encore as everyone was about to head off stage. (Yikes - ain't playing with her no more)

    This Tornado Loves Neko

by kwathi on 2009-07-23Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

The Vogue was incredibly hot that night just like Neko's set. She had a lovely backdrop topped by an owl with glowing eyes. The backdrop showed video projections that accompanied her excellent songs. Neko was stirring as always. Her backup singer from Georgia was hilarious, engaging Neko in funny banter between songs. The highlight was This Tornado Loves You with a great little video of a hand-drawn tornado emitting small red hearts.

    Neko's latest coming out party.

by hHip on 2009-07-19Massey Hall - Toronto

In spite of her immense talent and fairly commanding stage presence, Miss Case confessed to being a bit nervous up on the stage of great old Massey Hall, and it lent the show an unexpected intimacy. Maybe it's because the stately old hall has seen more than its share of musical legends, but Neko seemed to respectfully and knowingly ease into an amazing set of music before really opening up, and it drew the audience in even closer. When Neko fully unleashed her incredible voice on the rapt throng, she filled every space right up to the rafters, and it seemed that she could sing until the roof blew off the joint.

    Neko Case - Amazing

by Deckman on 2009-07-16Massey Hall - Toronto

Amazing! This girl can belt them out. I was worried that her voice would lose something in a live venue but my worries were put to rest July 14th at Massey Hall. I'm almost embarrassed to admit her voice gave me goosebumps. Little black dress, fire engine red heels, and shocking red mane mixed with that wit made for a very entertaining evening. We missed out on her earlier appearance in T.O. in the spring and feel very fortunate to catch her next time around. If this kind of music is your thing - don't miss Neko Case.

    A Wonderful Concert

by Chuffer on 2009-07-16Massey Hall - Toronto

Neko Case and her bandmates were clearly having fun and enjoying themselves on stage, and this translated into an energetic set that covered most of the songs off Middle Cyclone, as well as several from Fox Confessor and other albums. The opening act wasn't spectacular, but all was forgotten as soon as Neko took the stage and uncaged her beautiful voice. A great experience!

    great show at massey hall

by billbo on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

I'm not very objective when it comes to neko case. Since the first time I saw her at a Blue rodeo picnic, I became hooked on her live music and recordings. Although she doesn't play many of her earlier music, she has plenty of songs to draw from, which she did last night at Massey Hall. It was good to see her and her band play so well at this larger venue. i actually thought the show was better than her recent concert at Trinity-St. Paul's. I found the crowd to be a bit quiet, and thought there were moments of tension, which were eased with Neko's stage banter with bandmate Kelly Hogan, and by song after song, which revealed what a great singer and songwriter she is. Favorite songs--- Vengeance is Sleeping, Prison girls, I'm an animal.

    I consider myself fortunate

    by Kaudio5440 on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

I consider myself fortunate to have attended Neko Case's first performance at Massey Hall -- sure to be one of many in the future of a woman with such a compelling talent to fuel a long and prosperous career. Her voice is a gift and her songs are beautiful, interesting and emotionally involving. Loved each and every song.

Neko Case - Double encour at Massey Hall

    by Triciacbrf3 on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

Do you really need to read a review about Neko Case? She always delivers, entertains and makes a two hr concert seem like 10 mins. Yes its weird sitting and not standing in a bar, but you can take your beer to the seats now at Massey Hall if you use a lid!!!! Thanks Kelly Hogan and Neko, your angelic voices and layered guitars (very talented partrially Canadian support band also!) rocked our Tuesday night. Wishing it would never end.....and I am sure every boy in the audience was wishing he could pat Neko's derriere following two fab encours just like Kelly! BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

    good show

by hestia on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

I've seen Neko live a few times and this was great, but not her best night -- she seemed nervous and a little out of sync with her band. But it's allways a treat to hear her powerful voice. I will always catch her shows whenever I can!

Man, those seats are weird!... but comfortable.

by JohnnyBigbags on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

Excellent harmonies between Neko and Kelly Hogan, especially with the acoustics in Massey Hall. Neko seemed a little nervous, which is nice. Instrumentation was drums, upright and electric bass, two guitar players, one of which mostly played pedal steel and occasionally banjo, Neko on tenor electric and acoustic guitars and Kelly on backing vocals and quirky stage banter. It was a pretty casual affair that ended with two rounds of encores and a standing ovation. Sound was excellent, band sounded great, vocals superb... the show was great.

    LOSE THE SIDEKICK.

by SydneyBridge on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

Neko Case was amazing at Massey Hall. She sounded fantastic and the band was on point all night. She also played a great mix of new and old. This show falls short of a perfect concert going experience due to her annoying back up singer who felt the need to fill every nano-second of silence with her inane comments, useless chatter and unnecessary observations. She would not shut the hell up. Every song they played would try to invite you into their world and every time they finished playing a song their stupid loud mouthed chatty Cathy back-up singer would pipe in to keep the attention on her and yank you right back out. It would be like Watching Letterman and having Paul Shaffer deliver 90% of the jokes. I thought it might have just been me but when I overheard a complete stranger complaining about the same thing on the way out of the venue I knew I wasn't alone.

Neko Case, an absolute gem as usual

by redheadweaver on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

Neko Case is spectacular live and always spot on. The vocals together with the remarkable Kelly Hogan are fantastic and an exact replica of the album. Great pedal steel and double base as well! She played songs from all her hit albums and picked the best ones! Brilliant songs from Blacklisted, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and Middle Cyclone. I am such a huge fan and my appreciation is heightened after that wonderful display last night!

What a show... Neko Case and her band never fail to deliver. Inspiring, exciting, country-rock-spy music that will blow you away and send chills down your spine.
