About

Finding the box in which to place singer-songwriter Neko Case has proven perplexing for the Grammy Awards poobahs, and just about everyone else. She released her acclaimed seventh solo album in 2013 -- titled The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You -- and promptly earned a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category. Her preceding set, 2009's Middle Cyclone, earned the Alexandria, Va., native a nomination in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. With her tendency to write folk-based songs with a bit of a loping beat, she's often refereed to as an Americana or alt-country artist, but her sound fits just as comfortably in the indie-rock singer-songwriter category. Further complicating matters is Case's longtime status as a member of Canadian indie supergroup The New Pornographers, with whom she's been known to belt out power-pop tunes.

Whatever you call her style, Case is a hit with fans and critics alike thanks to her poignant songwriting and her distinctive, smoky voice, which shines in concert. It's a combination that has fans flocking to buy tickets to see her on tour, where she's put the focus on the music while eschewing trappings like costume changes and fancy set designs.

    Neko captured me...

by pocrnin on 2009-07-15Massey Hall - Toronto

This was my very first Neko concert. After the yawner of an opening act (don't remember his name), Neko came in as a shy, yet intriguing artist with a most incredible voice. She impressed me to no end, and her backup vocalist was as amazing. Their friendly chatter in between songs was also very entertaining. I laughed and was left mezmerized by the sheer talent of all of the musicians on stage. I will definitely make a point of attending another concert.

Wish I could have heard Neko at her concert

by lifesgood on 2009-07-15Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

While I am a fan of Neko Case, her lyrics and her voice, I was very disappointed in the concert at the Vogue theatre because her band was overpowering. Neither my daughter nor I could make out her lyrics and often could barely hear her voice.

    Neko shines

by pconroy on 2009-07-14Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

My first time at the Vogue Theatre - an old movie theatre turned music venue on the Granville Street party strip. Support tonight came in the form of ex-Grandaddy lead singer, Jason Lytle. Although his debut solo album is a worthy listen, sadly this didn't translate well live. There was little connection with the audience and, even for me, things were a tad too despressing - as one guy in the toilets commented: "this guy needs to be put on suicide watch". So, the lovely Neko Case ... *amazing* as always. Not as good as the Malkin Bowl concert in August last year but on par with the first time I saw Ms Case a few years back. Another similarity to me first Neko concert: the heat! Tonight was nowhere near as hot as the 38'C+ gig-in-a-tin-shed sweathathon but, for Vancouver, 30'c outside and lack of air-con sure made us glad to have a cold beer or two (even if my mate did accidentally knock my beer over!). Touring her latest album, Middle Cyclone, Neko naturally played a majority of songs from the new album but also offered up a few old gems and a couple of covers. Missing from the set list were such classics as Hold On and John Saw That Number. A real shame that these two songs weren't played because previous experience highlighted how wonderful they are live. Neko's voice was superb as was Kelly's. The rest of the band sounded good, but it was all about two two women. The stage banter was good (Kelly noticing the gum she left on the side of the stage at soundcheck, Neko get steamy for 'Captain Caveman' in the audience) but lacking the humour and silliness from previous gigs (blame the heat for that!)

Neko Case Is Alright For Fighting!

by nathanz on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

She's got a voice that just can't be fully appreciated till you hear her live. Her songs are so heartbreakingly beautiful. Her band plays just as well, and their onstage banter is so cheesy and hilarious. I'd fight for tickets to shows like this!

not the man you thought I was

by chis on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

ms. case is a unique and gifted song-writer. her voice seems capable of anything, but personally i am most impressed by her writing skills. each song is individual, exploring its own trajectory and emotion. her live performance was flawless and intimate. near exact to the studio album - certainly vocally - perhaps more so than other performers because of the unique quality of each song. the band was both tight and vivifying; almost wished for a bit more exploration on their part in at least a few renditions. the venue was crammed, undergoing a heat wave, and somewhat ant-infested (my friend and i were sitting on the floor) but i was entranced by neko's songs (even as i know them well), the band's integrity and deliverance, and neko's crystal clear voice - beseeching, plaintive, puzzled, contrite.

Great Show, but something was missing...

by Jhezika on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

First off, I love Neko Case with all my heart. She has quickly risen to being my favorite singer/songwriter, and her albums are never off my ipod. I had high hopes for this concert, but I left feeling a little let down. She and her band both sounded amazing, spot on, and musically tight, but the venue (The Vogue) was overpacked and overheated which drew my attention away from what was going on on stage. I would definitely see her again, but I would love it to be somewhere with airconditioning (or at least some airflow)! I think she would be be suited for an outdoor show somewhere.

    Neko!

by meandmariah on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Neko Case put on an amazing show as per usual. She is professional in every way. Her voice is crystal clear and full of passion. Unfortunately after paying 50$ for a ticket, the opening band was horrible. 5 min wait at least between each song. The lead singer never mentioned what the name of the band was called, nor did he introduce the backup band, which in all honesty seemed to be far more talented than he. He kept making excuses for his lack of organization...."jet lag".....come on. If you're in a band and make your living from going on tour, I don't want to hear about it. suck it up. But enough naggling....I was there for Neko....and she never ceases to amaze!

    Neko Case, amazing live!

by BarnOwl on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Neko Case sounded just as good or even better than on her album. She had great banter with her back up vocalist which made the show just that much better. It really was an amazing show!

    Neko is a true professional

    by WRDiva1 on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

On a rare "scorcher" day in Vancouver, Neko appeared on a stage that must have been 20 degrees hotter than the theatre (which was horribly hot) to deliver a concert that sizzled (sorry for the pun). She was obviously way overheated in her black tshirt and jeans, but handled it with aplomb. Her voice was in fine form and her relaxed approach to the concert put everyone at ease. She covered many of the songs from her newest cd, and the stories she conveyed with each gave us an insight into Neko the person. Her voice gets better every year, and the same can be said for her song writing. Fantastic! The Vogue Theatre, though not the best place to be on a hot evening, is a great venue with good sound for such a old room. I am personally glad to see it being used more often, as it seems to attract a diverse and interesting crowd.

Neko has such a great voice!

Neko and her band was spot on. It's great to see such a talented song writer and singer at such a laid back venue. We had a lot of fun

    An ass-kickedly great show

by nekofan on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Neko and her band put on a fantastic show. Every song is tight, the musicianship is excellent, the banter is funny. Neko Case's rise to stardom was inevitable given the integrity and strength of her song-writing and musicianship. Still, this could be one of the last smaller-venue tours she puts on and I'm so glad I was there.

    neko case @ the vogue

    by 3amRevelations on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

With various instruments, ranging from lap steel to upright bass to a banjo to a hand-cranked music box, everything was in front of a giant projection screen, flanked by two tall trees painted on either side and being held up by a giant owl. Seriously, on the screen were two wings holding on to it, and above a giant cutout of an owl head. With eyes that, during the show, lit up (and may or may not have peered into your very soul). When Case finally did come out, she kicked off with Maybe Sparrow and People Got A Lotta Nerve, setting the tone for the whole show. Songs were mostly from her latest two albums, but she had no problem going further into her backlog to play some older hits. The projection screen mostly showed random images that were related, literally or symbolically, to the songs at hand -- with the exception of People Got A Lotta Nerve, which ran the video for the song. She played for about an hour and a half, in total, and every time I see her (twice solo, twice with the New Pornographers, I think the count is at) I am constantly amazed by her incredible voice. And, of course, her backing band did a great job as well. Case was also her usual self, joking around with band mates and the crowd between songs (see: entry title). She is one of those performers that, while on stage, you can just tell she is thrilled to be up there, and that kind of energy translates into a superb live show.

    Neco case at the Vogue

by HoratioQSanchez on 2009-07-13Vogue Theatre - Vancouver

Outstanding show. I've seen her once before and still can't believe how amazing her voice is. The only downfall was the rediculous heat in the theatre.
