Opera Atelier is North America’s premier period opera/ballet company, producing the opera, ballet and drama of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. While drawing upon the aesthetics and ideals of the period, Opera Atelier goes beyond “reconstruction” and infuses each production with an inventive theatricality that resonates with modern audiences. Led by founding artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg since 1985, Opera Atelier has garnered acclaim for its performances at home as well as in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Opera Atelier puts on magnificent productions and this is one of their best but the experience was ruined for me at Tuesday's night's show when an operatic male voice from backstage yelled 'shut up' at an elderly patron in the front row who was suffering a brief but serious coughing fit during the soprano duet in Act 2. I was concerned for the elderly man's welfare as he was clearly struggling to breathe but the man who yelled shut up from the wings clearly did not. The audience did not stand though the singing was superb. I am afraid the incredibly unprofessional behaviour of one deprived the cast from their well deserved ovation. Bottom line - go but if you cough expect to be humiliated by someone behind the curtain.
Excellent operatic performances in this first opera by the then teenaged Mozart. Singers and Tafelmusic were stellar.
This baroque opera has been superbly realized by the directors of Opera Atelier. No wonder they received standing ovations in Europe. We must be thankful to have such talent in our city, and thankful to the city for having the Elgin Theatre in which to perform. The gold ornamentation was a perfect setting for this early 18th century piece, the costumes were set in period (no fooling around with faux modern settings), the vocal excellence consistent, the lighting perfect, Tafelmusic musicians at their usual standard of perfection, and the whole production was spellbinding. The repeats in the music were handled well, and were a real showcase for the voices. Thank you Opera Atelier for this gift.
The lighting was so bad I often could not tell which person was singing. The set was better lit than the singers.
The singing, acting, dancing, sets, stage management, and setting were all first rate. Bravo!
Superb opera, beautiful singers and acting. Choral sounds professional too. I like this old historical theater, very comfortable too. Glad that Atelier makes it to international show in Paris.
Elegant and sensitive and well performed.. Wonderful singing, acting and dancing
The baroque music on period instruments, the singing and ballet were all superb. There was a real connection with the audience bringing across the love story and moments of humour, too. We look forward to seeing Opera Attelier's next production in the Spring!
An outstanding performance! Incredible choreography and stunning dancers. Highly recommend.
I am so grateful that I was able to see Armide by Lully at the Elgin Theater, a French Baroque Opera from 1686, telling a story from the 11th Century First Crusade. Everything was spectacular, the costumes, the stage, the voices and the acting. The stylized Islamic influence of the stage design was completely unique. Throughout the performance I felt so happy that I had the privilege to be transported to a different world in a different time. What a wonderful experience!
The female lead, music, choir and dresses were all amazing. Enjoyed the comedic aspect in the second part.
Beautiful set and costumes, outstanding singing, dancing and choir, this was a 3 hour treat!
Excellent performance. Recommend for anyone who wants to try opera for the first time. The incorporation of ballet, choir into the performance makes it more exciting than traditional opera.
The opera was absolutely fantastic. Alcina captivated the audience and really made me feel for her at the end. Their was a script being displayed but the singer's were so good that their tone and melodies were able to convey their story with great confidence. For anyone under 30, this is a MUST SEE! As tickets are only 30$. I am looking into pupurchasing front row tickets so that I may expierence the opera in a different outlook. To sum it up, the show is like no other with vivid computer design and innovative practices, the singer's are worldly and inspiring, the dancers move like gazelles and the whole show is well worth the ticket price! A must see!
As always, Opera Atelier impresses, but this production of Handel's Alcina was spectacular both visually and musically and in song. The period costumes, the ballet, Tafelmusik, and in particular Meghan Lindsay as soprano in the role of Alcina. Bravo!
Beautiful music, wonderful singing, elegant dancing and clever staging - another of the delightful and most improving entertainments. Very baroque!
Opera Atelier's Alcina is amazing show! Bravo! Bravissimo!
Outstanding evening at the theatre. The sets, costumes, staging, singing, choreography... all wonderful. This was my first time at the Opera Atelier and I'm now a fan.
It was a triumph to produce this period opera with such style and vitality that it engaged and charmed its audience from overture to curtain call. Its consistency was a delight: from its orchestra performing on instruments used at the time of the opera's original production to costumes faithful to the era. I especially admired the careful adherence to the line between fidelity to the tone of its time and ironic insights from a contemporary stance.
