Gutwrenching and passion by Paolo & the Vipers

by CrazyCanuck on 2009-09-22Showbox SoDo - Seattle

Given that I saw Paolo & the Vipers on Friday night in Vancouver at the Commodore to an extraordinary (and sold out) show...I wasn't sure if a performance could be anymore earthshattering...but Saturday night in Seattle the boys and the soulful master pulled off a show that everyone in the audience will remember. The vocals cranked out by Paolo guided by the skilllful musical talent of the Vipers rocked the Showbox SoDo like a tornado blowing through the building. I was at the stage right in front of the man himself and was completely mesmerized for the entire stellar performance. Truly, in all my 40 years of concert going, the ONLY person (and band) that rocked my world was Bruce Springsteen...so Paolo and the boys put on one fabulous end of the tour show and I doubt anyone, including myself, will EVER forget the show of a lifetime. My thanks to all the band members, especially Donny (for allowing me to have my photo taken with him outside the venue!) for making a dream come true in every sense of the word.

    Nuts for Nutini

    by sully110 on 2009-09-21Showbox SoDo - Seattle

Paolo has an incredible energy and talent. I was grateful to be able to watch him in this kind of venue - something tells me he won't be playing these smallish places for much longer. An amazing show.

    Paolo had serious passion!

by mtmvancouver on 2009-09-21Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Paolo was seriously passionate and sang his heart out - great show. Had his back turned away from the audience and had a difficult time connecting with the audience - I attribute it to his age and ego-centrism.

The show was pretty great. All shows @ The Commodore are amazing! I would have liked to have heard some more singles played in the set, however. Great energy and good show overall!

    Paolo wails!!!!

by Splang on 2009-09-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

It is very interesting to see an artist you love on a CD, live. Typically it's not of the same caliber. Not true in this case. He rocked out and boy can this guy sing!!!!! I enjoyed every minute of it. I was truly impressed by his raw talent. Would see him again in a heart beat. My only regret was we didn't bring more people.

    Paulo rocked the Commodore!

by groovymommy on 2009-09-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

What a talented musician Paulo is proving himself to be! About a third of the way through the set, his ballad-style lyrics were rewoven into a (mostly) R&B genre that really worked for the band. It was amazingly entertaining, refreshing, and unforgettable to witness how his voice, a lifeforce itself, ripped itself from his body. He switched his form several times throughout particular songs, allowing us the priviledge of his incredible range! Loved his band: 6 other guys on various percussion, guitars, and back up vocals. Next time, I hope he takes the time to introduce everyone to us!

    Paolo was electrifing!

by Raitts on 2009-09-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Paolo Nutini last night at the Commodore Ballroom. Even though I didn't have the best seats in the house, the show was still amazing. HIgh energy throughout the setlist. I would recommend this event to anyone.

    Good despite being inebriated

    by Angela1823 on 2009-09-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Great show. Tracks were superior to the album quality, despite a Paulo being heavily intoxicated. He had several false starts to some of the tracks and mumbled a few times when he forgot the words. The low light of the show was New Shoes which he was struggling to get through. Highlight was Smoky Joes Cafe - he did a fantastic job on that track. Excellent vocals, great backing band. One of the better concerts I have seen in awhile.

Paolo was good, opening act was horrible!!!!

by Kozzie on 2009-09-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I took 2 friends with me, and we all agree the opening act was terrible. Would have skipped that if we could have, but had to be there early to get a table. The Commodore was great, good food. Paolo played for over an hour, and his band was amazing!

    Paolo was SO good!!

by kidbrock on 2009-08-04The Opera House - Toronto

The Opera House is a great venue. The entire place is general admission and all areas offer a clear view of the stage. There were two opening acts which kept the eager crowd entertained with an acoustic set, including a couple of covers. Paolo was on top of his game and played all of his hits from the first album with a good smattering from his latest release as well. The band was tight and well rehearsed...and they played off each other all night. The event was sold-out but it wasn't over-crowded. Beers were only $5 which was great!!

    Paolo--well worth the money.

by iolarah on 2009-08-04The Opera House - Toronto

It's been a long time since I've been to a show where the audience was chanting the singer's name before they even got on stage. The range of people in the crowd was amazing--I took my dad, for his 60th birthday, and he was afraid he'd be the only "old guy" there, but there were at least a half dozen people around his age, some in their 40s, some in their thirties. Predominantly, the crowd seemed to be early to late twenties, though, with their iPhones held high instead of lighters, and they knew all the words. Paolo Nutini started the show with "New Shoes", and what a way to start the show on a high note--high energy, and immediately hooked the crowd. He kept the energy level high for a few more songs, then slowed it down for a few, and continued to alternate that way. At the beginning of the night, I'd seen a young woman carrying a rose, and during "Chamber Music", she threw it onto the stage. Several songs later, three pairs of underwear and a light blue bra followed. At the end of that song, after the band left the stage for the first time, a hot pink bra arced over the heads of the crowd and hooked onto Paolo's mic stand, hanging perfectly by one strap. The crowd erupted in cheers--I mean really, how often does that happen? Two stage hands popped out on stage to reorganize their instruments before the encore, and one took the bra off the mic stand, which inspired a lot of booing and jeering. The other picked up the blue bra and then hung it on the guitarist's mic stand, to laughter and some cheering. After they finished righting things, the first stage hand took the pink bra and rehung it on Paolo's mic stand, and the roar of the crowd was immense. Definitely my favourite moment. The band was tight, the song selection was excellent, the performances were great. My only wish is that he had looked around a bit more--he seems to play to the people directly to the front right of him. But the night wasn't for me, it was really for my dad, and he had a fantastic time, so that's what really counts.
