The modest!
by Tanzantan on 2012-06-12Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5Mr. Paul's one of my favorites. A proper bloke and musician. It's bad he doesn't come more often, but then all the wait is rewarded.
Weller is a genius !
by Stan69 on 2012-06-12Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5The audience were clearly Weller die hards who hadn't heard much from him in while, no surprise since he hadn't been to Toronto for twelve years, but still surprised me to hear people in the queue to get in discussing The Style Council and The Jam as if it were yesterday. No surprise then that the concert got off to a slowish start with all the tracks from the new album and when Paul announced "side two" as if he was turning over the vinyl it all seemed a bit stale. The new album is certainly not a Weller classic but the new album was quickly forgotten when Paul kicked off an acoustic set with "The Butterfly Collector" with the entire band on acoustic guitars. Brilliant ! The set spiralled skyward from there-on, we got all the classics, demonstrating Weller's superbly rich and very British songwriting, the social commentary, the love songs and the out and out punk driven rock, fantastic !
Paul is still rocking
by Handyandy on 2012-06-12Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5Well last time I saw Paul was at Massey Hall about 15 years ago- If I were to choose, I would say the last concert was better . I enjoyed the acoustic and the elecric sets but I didn't get blown away with the new Sonic Kicks album. He seemed to just rifle through them but didn't seem to be trying to sell the new stuff. Not that I don't go way back but I still would expect a little more soul in his presentations- He did seem to warm up , and eventaually let it all out as he does so well. I was just a little underwelmed-
Pure Class
by dfcson on 2012-05-24Sound Academy - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5Weller continues to shine. It was a brave move seeing him do the entire new album Sonik Kicks beginning to end as the first set, and only someone of his stature could pull off such a ballsy move. Considering this was only one of three dates in north america, I hope fans reveled in it. I still maintain the Sound Academy is the worst venue in the city and I've sworn off it; only Weller could get me to trek out to this dismal desolate shoebox.
Weller in NYC
by Fowlski on 2010-11-09Best Buy Theater - New York CityRating: 4 out of 5Another great Weller gig. Close to two hours of mixing some Jam and Style Council classic tracks with older songs from his solo career and some of the new Wake up the Nation tunes. A great night out in NYC and worth the trip from Canada. Weller was and always has been a class act, venue was great for sight lines and the crowd were there to have fun. Good night out..!
Paul Weller was spot on!!
by casda on 2010-11-09Best Buy Theater - New York CityRating: 5 out of 5PW was in control as always..a nice tight set...they all appeared to be enjoying it. He lets them have their moment to shine. Best Buy theatre in NYC is a great place to see a band.
