Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having served as a major influence for artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more. And today, a whole new generation of music fans has been discovering and embracing the band's "loudquietloud" signature sound. Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies' calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa, and the iconic Platinum Doolittle, considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums. Sell-out crowds all over the globe, Pixies' live shows are unadulterated magic, simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi. Seventy-five minutes of the band playing anything they want, in whatever order they want, the classics and the new gems. And no two Pixies shows are ever the same.
After disbanding in 1993, Pixies launched their reunion tour in April 2004, playing to sell-out crowds across the globe for 15 years, a far longer period of time than they were a band originally. But writing, recording, and releasing new music was something that the band had been wanting to do for a long time, so they secretly booked studio time in Wales for the fall of 2012. Six days into the recording, founding bassist Kim Deal decided to leave the band; Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering made the decision to carry on, finishing and releasing the band's first studio album in more than two decades, 2014's Indie Cindy.
As a prolific international touring band, Francis, Santiago, Lovering began working with a number of touring bassists, including former A Perfect Circle bassist Paz Lenchantin. The band are renowned for their emphatic live performances - where they play all four corners of the globe - their live sets regularly rack up to 30+ songs played - made even more impressive by the fact that there are no pre-planned setlists or soundchecks before the band walk onto the stage to play.
Twenty-sixteen's Head Carrier followed and marked the beginning of the band's long-standing collaboration with British producer Tom Dalgety. Twenty-eighteen's Beneath the Eyrie, the next full-length recording project with Dalgety, was recorded at Dreamland Studios near Woodstock, NY. The recording session was documented by the innovative "It's a Pixies Podcast," which captured a true un-edited record of the recording process. A deluxe edition followed, featuring unreleased demos from the Dreamland session.
Early 2022 saw the band and producer Dalgety settle into Guilford Studios in the woods of Vermont, armed with a true abundance of riches, more demos than were needed for the band's eighth album, Doggerel. Pixies renewed musical fervor saw a stand-alone single, "Human Crime," leap from the shadows in March 2022, and the band then headed out on the road to play sold-out shows in North America, headline BBC Radio 6 Music Festival in Cardiff, and play Mexico City's Vive Latino festival to 70,000 people. Pixies' first international tour since 2019 kicks off June 22 in Europe and will see the band performing in South America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Doggerel (2022) is a mature yet visceral record of gruesome folk, ballroom pop and brutal rock haunted by the ghosts of affairs and indulgences, driven wild by cosmic forces and envisioning digital afterlives where no God has provided one.
Doggerel was toured worldwide to sell-out audiences across the entirety of 2022 and 2023 - with the very last show at Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles. Despite the band approaching their 38th year together, the crowds remain as diverse as ever - with new generations of fans emerging year-on-year who were not even born during Pixies 1.0. Pixies will return in 2024...
Incredible show. Played some classics in their original form and in newage form. Exceptional live sound...from instruments to voice. Well done! We took our 10 year old to this show; as his first concert and we were inpressed that no one shoved or pushed him. Thank you fellow music lovers for making Milo's first concert experience a positive one!
This was a bucket list thing for me. Was introduced to and fell in love with the Pixies and their music 12 years ago. 6 years ago when they got back together to tour again I was VERY pregnant and couldn't go. Really didn't think I would have a second chance...so needless to say it was a dream come true...AND THEY WERE AWESOME!!! :)
GREAT! AMAZING! almost made us cry with their brilliance. Massey hall was beautiful as well.
Great concert! Pixies sound as good or better than they did back in the day. Doolittle is great, even better played live. The visual background LED screen was very entertaining and added to the music played.
Interesting show; first time I have seen the pixies. Definitley recommended for any Pixies fan Lots of thick rimmed glasses, plaid, Chuck Taylors and Doc Martens in the crown.
The sound was nice and loud, although, was difficult to hear some of the lead guitar cause the rhythm was so loud. They had some great film imagery to go along with their songs in the background. Great musicianship, and they sounded almost as good as they do on the records. It was the 22 year anniversary of the album 'Doolittle' ...so they played that album in it's entirety, and a few b-sides were played throughout the concert as well. Frank Black can still belt out those screams and Kim Deal still sounds sweet as ever.
So glad I finally saw The Pixies perform live! Massey Hall has the best sound and I was happy with my seats (2nd balcony far right of stage). Kim Deal charmed the crowd in between songs, but I was kinda hoping to hear Frank Black say a few words. Although I assume he was saving his voice since he did sound as good as he did 22 years ago on Doolittle album :))
Well worth the money and a lot better than their reunion tour in 2004. The Pixies are back on their game!
It was 1992 when my husband and I first went to see the Pixies at Porter Hall, Carleton University - it was loud and terrific good fun. Fast forward to almost 19 years later and other than the fact we're all a little older, the show was still as loud, still as terrific and still standing the test of time amazingly well. We managed - without even trying too hard - to get front and centre stage and thought ourselves to be pretty darn lucky. The show was almost flawless, and even the one minor hiccup was quite amusing once they'd sorted themselves out. Banter was kept to a minimum although Kim did manage to try and engage the band with the audience more so than any other member. She was the perfect comic relief to an otherwise sober, single-minded lead singer; who incidentally sounded fantastic. We felt like we were much younger than our years at this show and were glad to see rock lovers of our vintage mixed in with a new crop of Pixie lovers. It was an amazing show, and the opening act Imaginary Cities, was a good pick for a warm-up act. Go see it!
An amazing show, performed by an amazing band who have not lost their touch. Everything fron the technical aspects, to the Doolittle songs, to the encores blew my mind. A stage friendly, relaxed band who put on a show worthy of Montreal.
I had such a blast on both nights...same spot on the side of the floor's main middle bar, having a great front view on the stage, amaaaaaaazing sound...like a quadrophenic effect! The band was in great shape, Kim Deal was always smiling large and talking to the crowd in some french as well...the vibe was great...springtime fever all over the Metropolis, which was the perfect venue for this tour. Lots of nostalgia in the air that is for sure, but for the right reasons. Many people were body surfing, clearly enjoying themselves, the pounding bass and the tight hign hats and snares were giving me shivers. I was dancing, grooving and singing every song....like most attendees did more than half of the set. Lightings and visuals were beautiful, in the theme of the Doolittle album, original and sober at the same time. The crowd singing along Where Is My Mind? and Gigantic made the sweetess combo set closer ever!
The Pixies did it - what a great show!! Everything was memorable, fromthe opening where the b-side were played almost muffled to when they started playing the first note of the first song on Debaser. They rocked it through the entire performance. The two encores were incredible!
Let me start by saying, its kind of hard to be impartial when Im writing a concert review of my favourite band, but man were the Pixies Awesome!! I flew in from Vancouver to see them and it was probably the best show I'd ever been to. Excellent venue, great sound (a minor glitche between songs early), and a very knowledgable and appreciative crowd. Maybe it was because I was so jacked up for this show, but I did expect it to be a little crazier down front where I was. The band sounded really tight the whole show and they seemed like they were truly enjoying themselves. Not much interaction with the crowd which is kind of expected from them except for a few words from Kim who always seems to have something on her mind. At about only 90 minutes, the performance obviously felt kind of short for myself and most of the crowd, but it was an amazing experience form start to finish with the end being the only moment of disappointment. So let me finish by strongly recomending this show. Because seeing one the greatest and most influential bands ever should not be missed!
