About

Swiss/Tamil R&B star Priya Ragu's soulful electo-pop beats blend her South Asian heritage and Western upbringing. Born to refugees of the Sri Lankan civil war and raised in Switzerland, music has always been a part of Ragu's life. She found her voice as a child while singing the spiritual tones of Eelam music alongside her father and brother, but it was the Fugees that sparked a need to perform.

As she extended her tastes to the R&B soul sounds of Nina Simone, India. Arie and Musiq Soulchild, the culture clash between her parent's traditionalism and Western trends grew. This peaked as Ragu was due to perform Alicia Keys' 'Falling' with her brother's rap group but wascaught by her father who disapproved after reading her diary. Despite hiding her musical ambitions going forwards, her Tamil upbringing has continued to play a vital role in her self-titled genre of 'raguwavy'.

Her 2021 debut mixtape 'damnshestamil' is a perfect snapshot of this global-pop sound. Working with her producer, co-writer and brother Japhna Gold, she's captured Kollywood samples, Krishna mantras and her native Tamil language while keeping it of the moment. Funk-fuelled 'Good Love 2.0' hasa clear poetism behind its grooving beats, while 'Chicken Lemon Rice' deploys dancing tabla beats alongside celebratory tales of unity.

Her success has seen her support Jungle on tour, feature three times as BBC Radio 1's Tune of the Week and clock up countless inclusions as one to watch by the world's press (NME, Amazon, Spotify to name a few). However, most importantly to Ragu, it's opened up the relationship with her parents, with them contributing lyrically to her mixtape's melismatic closer 'Santhosam'.

    Not enough

Priya was amazing and high energy but a 50 minutes performance is disappointing. She has so many songs in Tamil she could of done a few of them.
