Top bands. Stellar performances. Terrible audience.

by Noel on 2023-04-24Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Sleaford Mods and Gustaf (the opening act) gave it everything. These are top notch, high-energy outfits, and they delivered on what they promise. It was great to hear these bands in live space and see the effort they put into their craft. Anyone who knows either Sleaford Mods or Gustaf doesn't need to hear my punter's take. I would give the show a perfect 5 stars, but Commodore Ballroom (and Vancouver in general) seems to attract and enable too much of the mouth-breathing, stand-with-your-arms-folded crowd. Add to that the bros vaping or lighting up in the middle of what was supposed to be a smoke-free dance floor. (Security did nothing to stop it. Not once.) Add to that too many dudes with sharpened elbows shoving through the crowd as if on a mission, disrupting those of us who we there to dance and enjoy the show, only to stand in the middle of the floor just long enough to hold up their smart phones and record a snippet of song, before shoving their way out again. After being to countless shows in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Montreal, and Japan, I rate Vancouver as tops for lackluster, too-cool-for-this crowds who bring shows down. It may be telling that despite big cheering at the end of the Sleaford Mods show, the band chose not to do an encore. Why bother?

    good show!

by kigaku on 2023-04-23Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Now this was supposed to be a post-punk, post-pandemic re-opening for us and it was. From the very beginning Gustaf really surprised with live energy. We had a short period to tune into their spotify prior to the show but due to their catchy rhythms and lyrics it was easy to catch up like we knew them forever. Sleaford Mods delivered to highest expectations and the live version added an additional level of appreciation for all of it, including the lyrical expression, stage presence from both members and the conference in pushing that play button. Now given my deteriorating hearing you may take the following with a grain of salt but I will say that union potentially have not put their best foot forward and the sound production was heavy in the treble range and may have not felt as balanced as perhaps I'd like however we really both enjoyed this show.

    High power

by Peter Plump on 2023-04-23Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Great show, have been a fan for only a few month. I had little expectations of what the show would be, two guys and the big stage. No intraments, no turntables. They absolutely blew me away. Can't think of many groups ive seen that go that hard, nonstop for hour and half. So fun, so happy they decided to come Vancouver. Was only disappointed that I didnt go to the merch table during the first half of show for the UKGrim vinyl.

    Not bad not great

by Ploticus on 2023-04-23Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Opening act was a bad match, vocals were not mixed well. Music was fun, still a good energy. They have some new slow stuff that didn't really vibe

    Terrible Sound

    by K on 2023-04-23Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

The band was good; exactly what I expected. Only one big problem - terrible sound on the vocals. The lyrics and vocal delivery of Jason Williamson are key to this group. I could not make out the lyrics no matter where I stood, even next to the sound man (is he deaf). Terrible
