Top bands. Stellar performances. Terrible audience.
by Noel on 2023-04-24Commodore Ballroom - VancouverSleaford Mods and Gustaf (the opening act) gave it everything. These are top notch, high-energy outfits, and they delivered on what they promise. It was great to hear these bands in live space and see the effort they put into their craft. Anyone who knows either Sleaford Mods or Gustaf doesn't need to hear my punter's take. I would give the show a perfect 5 stars, but Commodore Ballroom (and Vancouver in general) seems to attract and enable too much of the mouth-breathing, stand-with-your-arms-folded crowd. Add to that the bros vaping or lighting up in the middle of what was supposed to be a smoke-free dance floor. (Security did nothing to stop it. Not once.) Add to that too many dudes with sharpened elbows shoving through the crowd as if on a mission, disrupting those of us who we there to dance and enjoy the show, only to stand in the middle of the floor just long enough to hold up their smart phones and record a snippet of song, before shoving their way out again. After being to countless shows in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Montreal, and Japan, I rate Vancouver as tops for lackluster, too-cool-for-this crowds who bring shows down. It may be telling that despite big cheering at the end of the Sleaford Mods show, the band chose not to do an encore. Why bother?
