About

Daughter of a music professor; trained classically in her home country of Russia, Regina's passion for music was clear from childhood.  Once she completed her studies she moved to the Bronx, New York and her life has never been the same. Influenced by her Russian and Jewish roots, as well her new love for the city Regina's songwriting took off. It was in the underground music scene of the East Village where she found fame. Still, her music is always evolving, channeling  influences like Chopin, Janis Joplin, to experimenting with unusual instruments and vocal styles, Regina never ceases to surprise.

After a number of self-funded and distributed albums, she finally got her first proper release in 2004 when Warner Brothers re-released her 2003 self-released album Soviet Kitsch. She released the highly anticipated follow-up album, Begin To Hope, in 2006. The single from the album, "Fidelity", was a big hit and helped the album peak at number 20 in the US Billboard chart. Her fifth full album, Titled Far, was a smash hit, it entered the US charts at number three and raised Regina's profile worldwide. In 2010 she performed at President Obama's reception at the White House. Her latest album, titled What We Saw from the Cheap Seats also entered the US album chart at number three.

Regina first toured nationally with The Strokes and this was quickly followed by a tour supporting The Kings of Leon. A series of headline theater shows followed the release of the album Far and in recent years she has made frequent appearances during the European Summer Festival season. Away from music, Regina does a great deal of work for human rights charities and has raised money for Doctors Without Borders helping earthquake victims.

    RegSpek Live!

by MattC on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

One of the most notable things of this evening was the fact that Regina Spektor is incredible live. And when I say Incredible, it means that she sounds better live than on record, eventhough her records already blow your mind. From great music to great entertainment, Regina had everything in her show. It started off pretty damn good when K. Ishibashi from Jupiter One came on stage and swooned all the girls with his vocals. It only got better from that point on when Regina got on stage. From a drum solo on a chair, while playing piano to tough vocal quirks and transition, she had it all. She has a great personality on stage, when everyone just can agree that she is absolutely lovable. It is a must-see-show! Check her out!

Fell in love all over again..

by LBucky on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

She just knocked me out first of all by how inexplicably beautiful she is! Both inside and outside. She would not stop smiling with her big red lipstick covered lips, and her pearly whites! She would thank her audience after every song and was so humble about her musicians and the opening band and the band "Love Joy" that did not show up. She was so true in everything she sang and you could tell she was not singing for the audience and the fame but for herself.. She is truly a musician! Her music overwhelmed me and made me second guess if I was actually listening to HER! She played a lot of songs from her new album which is understandable, but she also played a lot of her old songs which was really nice seeing as I am a 5 year fan. She also played a new song right at the end that caught us all off guard but in a good way. It was an amazing and upbeat song that absolutely everybody was rockin' out to :)

She's the Human of the Year

by Socksrock on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

Regina is incredible. Her general quirkiness adds a whole new element to her performance. She was truly grateful for every applause, she laughed in between (and even during) songs, she is adorable in every way and brought a smile to my face from beginning to end with her amazing talent and beautiful soul. Please, buy her albums and go to a show if you can! You won't regret it.

    Spektor - Quite the spectacle!

by Jabberwocky on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

Regina Spektor is a true entertainer. She sat at her piano and sang for an hour and a half and enthralled the audience with her pure vocal and lyrical genius. I sort of expected that the songs might sound a little rougher around the edges than the engineered versions on the CDs. Wow, was I wrong! Her volume, tone and clarity was amazing in person.

    Regina Spektor

by Bdizzle on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

Regina Spektor is definitely an artist worth seeing, she is not only an amazing performer with a beautiful voice and a knack for seducing audiences, but she is also an incredibly sweet an unassuming woman. My only beef with the show at the Sound Academy is that the venue did not do her justice, Regina would be much better suited to perform in a place such as Massey Hall in Toronto -- hopefully that's where she'll be the next time she visits! Not only are the acoustics better there, but her shows are worthy of sitting and staring, because both her smile and her voice just suck you right in! It's easy to get lost in her presence on stage (most fans would prefer to see her than the back of someone else's head!). -B-dizzle.

    Regina and the Toronto Choir

by KimBoots on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

It was great to hear Regina play songs not just from her new album "Far", but also from "Soviet Kitsch" and "Begin to Hope", and others. Her performance was amazing, and so was her band. It was too bad that Little Joy couldn't perform, and it would've been nice if she had taken some audience requests or included some audience participation/interaction.

Regina is great, the venue is NOT

by morethanthis on 2009-09-17Sound Academy - Toronto

Spektor gave a wonderful performance, which I unfortunately could not thoroughly enjoy. Bringing her to play in a club was a very silly idea. This is not a dance or lounge performance that can be enjoyed while you wander around the floor and sip your beer. A proper music hall is what she needs, where you can sit back (or stand up and cheer) and focus your attention on the stage. I spent half the time trying to get a glimpse of Spektor from various vantage points. Very very stupid idea to bring her there.
