Robert Plant is aging well.
There will be no nostalgia tour for Plant, whose Band of Joy played an exuberant show in Vancouver on Sunday. No, Plant continues to "Ramble On" into new musical places.
The Band of Joy is simply put, a very, very, very good band indeed. Four fine lead singers, including Patti Griffin, whom Plant himself -- rightly -- called "the best singer in the band". Not that she has no competition. There is of course Plant and in addition, guitarist Buddy Miller and multi-instrumentalist Darrel Scott. All took turns singing. All shone.
The band lays out a wide range of rootsy Americana, British folk-rock -- including covers of Richard Thompson and vintage Fairport Convention -- blues, gospel and a few Zeppelin chestnuts for the die-hards, including "Ramble On", which was part of the show the last time I heard Plant in 1970.
Robert is in fine voice. Highlights included "Please Read the Letter", Los Lobos' "Little Angel Dance" and Townes Van Zandt's "Harm's Swift Way". Miller's guitar playing was steller throughout and his own vocal rootsy and soulful.
Led Zeppelin reunion? After his triumph with Allison Krauss and now this band, who needs it? "Ramble On", Robert.
