  • Michael Franti rocked, Santana sucked....

by devinemarie on 2011-08-31Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

It was so refreshing to see Michael Franti again with his beautiful energy and the way he interacts with the audience, I LOVE him. Santana on the other hand was extremely disappointing. All I heard was NOISE, loud drumming and well, just noise. The concert lacked the magic that was present the last time I saw him. His comment about women having to 'have it' was quite disturbing. Seems to me like he's milking it.... I left half way through.

  • Expected more from Carlos Santana

    by c3p022 on 2011-08-31Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

I was disappointed, I honestly felt like Carlos Santana was just a member of a large band. I didn't expect others to do all the singing. There were so many other "instruments" that I found it took away from his guitar playing and the whole concert was just too loud and felt like "just a lot of noise" most of the time. Saddledome acoustics are not very good. I really would have like a more intimate and solo Carlos Santana - maybe I just expected to much!

  • exceeded expectations!

by mnmflint on 2011-08-31Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

totally exceeded my expectations. Michael F./Spearhead - never heard of them but they are amazing entertainers - really really loved them. Santana of course, was amazing - fantastic artists!!!

  • flashbacks to woodstock.

    by zigzag1 on 2011-08-31Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

i first saw santana at woodstock in 1969 and to this day 42 years later i still go see him every chance i get. while he's embraced hip hop this tour, as a precussionist and avid fan of his style, he still blows me away . i enjoy him as much now as i did back in '69 and will continue to do so as long as he tours. carlos, my main man, keep it up!!

  • Santana lounge act

by OldBoomer on 2011-08-31Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The concert had highlights but overall it rambled and seemed unfocussed. The two singers were not very good. Sometimes a little off key and late in some vocals. Didn't appear to function well or integrated with the overall group. Carlos himself was excellent but was sometimes drowned out by other noise. The overall acoustics in the Saddledome are awful, with a loud screeching present that doesn't appear to flow from the actual music. Not sure what it is. Carlos Santana would be better off in a smaller, more intimate setting, say the Jack Singer, with fewer accompanying musicians.

  • by surfer123 on 2011-08-31Scotiabank Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Concert was fine. Drums were over bearing on Santana's music at times...or it could just be the poor sound system / acoustics of the Saddledome.

  • Santana was amazing!!

The pre-show was wonderful, and really got the crowd going! When Santana came out, the crowd was ecstatic, they played hit after hit, and had the audience singing, dancing and clapping to the wonderful latin beats. I have never seen Santana before and thouroughly enjoyed the amazing performance.

Between the opening act of Michael Franti and the main event with Carlos Santana, it was a great night. Lots of classics played, talented musicians and great fun dancing in our seats.

I have always wanted to see Santana live since I first heard of him in the early 70's and I was not disappointed the other night , however my wife was expecting Santana to sing black magic woman and her friend who came with us was supposed to be another friend but could not make because he was in hawaii , well she and my wife did not like the long musician solos. I really enjoyed the evening. Santana is Santana, hello !

  • Guitar Heaven, Music Heaven, Man, I was In Heaven

by Python46 on 2011-08-29Rogers Arena - Vancouver, British Columbia, CanadaRating: 5 out of 5

I did it. I finally got to see Carlos Santana. It was not just Carlos, but his whole group. Before he got on stage we were pleasantly treated to an awesome performance by Micheal Franti and Spearhead. A fantastic Latino Band from the San Franisco area. WOW, what a performance. everyone was dancing. Good opener for Santana. Then Santana . What an entrance. The band, all 8 of them got up on stage first and did an orchestra style warm-up into an instumental with horns, drums, conga drums, keyboards and guitars. When it got to it's loudest, on stepped Carlos Santana. He made sure we all had Consciousness. The Sound of Collective Consciousness Tour. Then, not one but 2 lead vocalists. Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay. Wow 11 band members in total including Carlos Santana. First song, from Guitar Heaven, Back In Black by ACDC. Then an assortment of older and newer favorites. When he started every song the crowd would go nuts dancing . Every song was a favorite. I was expecting some awesome instrumentals and I was not disappointed. Carlos is one of the most passionate guitar players in the world. You know that every note he plays comes from his heart and sole. He wore an all white shirt, pants and his signature hat. With the spot light on him it looked more like an aura around him. I mingled in the crowd before the show started and met Deb and Bob. Their first Santana show too. I saw them after the show, with huge smiles on their faces. They had a fantastic time . They said they hoped Carlos would return again. Carlos had several important messages to share with the world. " We are the Light and the Love" We all need to be more compassionate, we all have troubles but the world is a place with such beauty, we can not lose our abilty to spread the joy. Yes, there are those who walk around with all that baggage. You don't have to be miserable all the time, was his message. Don't lose what is important in life. Life is too short and we are not here for a long Time. Love Supreme. This is when I was smelling incense, over the already nice fragrance of Cannabis. It was really meaningful. His band is amazing. Raul Rekow, Played the Tiger Striped Congas. He has been with Santana for 36 years. I got to meet and talk to him. Thanks Raul for your autograph. Two more percussionists, Karl Perazzo and Dennis Chambers on Drums were just as spectacular. Benny Rietveld on Bass, awesome solo. Cool Horn section by Bill Ortiz on trumpet and Jeff Cressman on trombone. David K. Mathews on keyboards played with such passion and rounding it off was Tommy Anthony on Rythm Guitar. Tommy cut into a riff from Led Zeppelin, Heartbreaker halfway thru, then for his solo played and sung part of Black Dog. I am of course a huge Zeppelin fan and I happened to be wearing the "Four Sticks" T-shirt my daughter gave me. There was not 1 moment of that show that was a disappointment. All of Santana's cover songs he played from the Guitar Heaven CD was done beautifully and showed his respect and appreciation for all the great artists who have inspired him throughout his career. I can say I really did not know what I was missing until I saw Santana. Thanks for 45 years of your passion and music. I hope to see you again soon. A fan forever.

  • Santana still rocks!

Great concert, with a legendary guitarist: Carlos. Even the covers for AC/DC and Led Zeppelin had a Spanish touch. Great sound with clear guitar solos, Santana rocks!

  • Carlos and Santana (the band) did not disappoint.

by CACC on 2011-08-29Rogers Arena (formerly General Motors Place) - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was a gift to my brother for his birthday amd he was very HAppy. I danced from start to finish. Wished for more but we are all getting older. The male singers were absolutely magnificent. They could REALLY sing from the heart and the Singer/guitar player was absolutely outstanding. Carlos sends such a great message of sexual healing and Peace. The backdrop and video reception was also well done.

64 years and still rocking it out. Santana surprises everyone with a great set that included alittle ACDC Back in Black done with a Santana twist! Great energy and he always remember the favourites. Smooth, Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Jingo, Maria and Corazon Espinado. This is the 3rd time I've heard Carlos and I am not planning to stop now.
