About

Styx have endured for over five decades while staying true to their progressive rock sound and theatrical live show. Since releasing their self-titled debut in 1972, Styx have sold over 54 million records worldwide between 17 studio albums, 16 compilations and nine live recordings. Notably, the band released four consecutive RIAA-certified multi-platinum albums between 1977’s The Grand Illusion, 1978’s Pieces of Eight, 1979’s Cornerstone and 1981’s Paradise Theatre, the last of which became their first to top the Billboard 200. Across their career, Styx earned eight Top 10 singles on the Hot 100, including the chart-topping “Babe” as well as “Come Sail Away” “Mr. Roboto” and their 1990 comeback single “Show Me the Way.” Despite several hiatuses and lineup changes, Styx have become one of rock’s most consistent touring acts, hosting nearly 100 live shows every year for over two decades and netting career-best earnings on massive co-headlining tours with REO Speedwagon, Foreigner and Def Leppard. In 2021, Styx released their seventeenth studio album, Crash of the Crown.

  • Good Times!

by MisterRoboto on 2009-09-15Red Robinson Show Theatre - CoquitlamRating: 4 out of 5

what an awesome show. hav'nt seen Styx since 1978. I think Gowan is an excellent replacement for Deyoung. My girlfriend and I were dead center up against the stage. got Picks from Tommy,James and Rick. also got a polaroid photo taken by Gowan of the Drummer Todd. too bad the show had to end. would have loved to hear more songs from their early days.

  • Awesome!

by AH1974 on 2009-09-15River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

Great! Awesome! Coud've done Mr Robot, Gowna could've done more solo stuff as well as Criminal Mind, such as Moonight Desires and Strange Animal, but still a great show! Gowan's a great showman and dancer, like in Strange Animal video! Just wish he had've shaken my hand when I reached out to him! He shook someone else's hand, but oh well!

  • Styx rocks harder than ever!

by Bencosmo on 2009-09-15River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

After patiently waiting to get a chance to catch Styx live as headliners in Western Canada, it was a treat to see them perform in such a venue as the superb River Rock Theatre. Needless to say that 2 weeks after the phenomenal performance delivered by AC/DC at BC Place, it's good to see that the old guys still got what it takes to rock the house and, in some cases, to put the newer generations up to shame without even breaking a sweat! "Miss America" was the best idea to open the show as well as warm up the crowd and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan (ex-Rhinegold) turns out to be the perfect replacement of Dennis deYoung. The guy can definitely keep a note as his style goes in perfect harmony with the warm voice of Tommy Shaw, which, as always, remains very impressive. Overall, it appears that, as the band members grow older, instead of going softer, their performances are becoming more aggressive with razor sharp riffs and extended guitar solos in addition to the double bass technique of drummer-extraordinaire Todd Sucherman (ex-Spinal Tap). For someone like me, who enjoys tunes loud and heavy, many of us, I'm sure, felt like kids in a candy store! Even if we were hoping to hear great classics such as "Babe" as well as "Mister Roboto", the quality of the show delivered that night remained beyond reproach. One of the highlights of the year 2009!

by Rhoda on 2009-09-15Red Robinson Show Theatre - CoquitlamRating: 5 out of 5

I was amazed at how well they still sound. Their performance was great - lots of energy. The older guy added nothing however. No big deal if he wasn't there.

  • STYX rocks

by snicklefritz on 2009-09-15Red Robinson Show Theatre - CoquitlamRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely one of the best concerts I have been to. I couldn't believe how they could still ROCK! They are still as good as when they were topping the air waves. They are in incredible shape and don't look old which would have been a turn off. And they haven't lost their touch with making thier instruments wail. The drummer was unbelievable and I mean that word literally. I was soooo impressed they could still hit those high notes. I would go see them again if they come back again! Thanks STYX for the best evening of music I could have wished for!!!!

  • STYX ROCKED!!!

by MEEEEEEEE on 2009-09-15Red Robinson Show Theatre - CoquitlamRating: 5 out of 5

I grew up listening to these guys and was so pumped going to the show, and was excited that Gowan is now with them. I had seen him years ago and he was an amazing performer then. I had a feeling he would be a good fit and he definately lived up to it. There's no way they could have found a better replacement. It's scary how well he fits in and sounds freakishly like DDY. I was overall completely blown away by the show. Sound, performance, musicianship, etc. Everything was top notch beginning to end. I guess some things just get better with age.

by Perfectionist on 2009-09-14River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

The show was fantastic from start to finish. Gowan was outstanding. Dennis DeYoung is missed but Gowan sure fits in well with the band. Tommy Shaw and James Young sure know how to keep on rocking after all these years. I will definitely go see them again.

Absolutely fantastic as usual. I saw them last year at the Red Robinson Theatre and they were great there too. Gowan is such a show man, I enjoyed every song from them except ( I am the Walrus) by the Beatles, what was that about?

  • Gowan showmanship is very entertaining.

  • Styx you beauty!

by nax1 on 2009-09-14River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

It was incredible, the venue was intimate enough but not too small...... Styx you are better now than ever, and all the "new" guys have kept you current, but your retro-brilliance still shines through!! Fantastic the way you included the audience, it was a party and we all participated! Awesome, would love to see you again and still buy your albums......rock on!!!

  • Sytx was a great experience

by Dene on 2009-09-13River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

The Concert was great, I didn't know much of much of hte music they played but they played really great. But I was not pleased at the staff as I was told to put my camera away when there were so many others that had their cameras and no one told them to put them away.

  • Styx was awesome!

by petmat on 2009-09-13Red Robinson Show Theatre - CoquitlamRating: 5 out of 5

We were minor Styx fans in the 70's and 80's and decided to see them yesterday because of songs like "Come Sail Away" , "Lorelei" , and "Suite Madame Blue." We were amazed. The show was better than expected. The Red Robinson Show Theatre is a great venue.....not a bad seat in the house. Sound was excellent. But most striking were the voices of Gowan, Tommy Shaw, and James Young. These guys sound great! So many popular acts from the 70s and 80s don't sound nearly as good as they used to; however, Styx sounded great. I'd go so far as to suggest they're still at their peak. They are also very good musicians and put on a great show with good audience interaction. We highly recommend Styx, and hope they come back next year.
