About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

    Flash Tight and Unbelievablely Great

Cat Empire is a symphony of sounds that your ears will joyously recieve. These guys are so amazing they bring a hole new meaning to Skaw and Jazz. I cannot wait till I can see them again. I would love to see them at the Esby in Melbourne. Thank you Australia for the Cat Empire.

cats conspiciously absent from Cat Empire concert

by Anonymous on 2009-11-26Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

You can try to sit still while this band is playing, but I doubt that this will work: your body will start to dance despite you! They are all very skilled and masterful musicians who do not take themselves too seriously, and the songs are intelligent but free from self-absorbed drama. They play an impressive varitey of styles (established as well as invented, one of them being some trance-like gypsy techno :-) with equal prowess. They also appeal to a variety of age groups, young as well as semi-old farts like ourselves, in our 40s. One slice of the population we did not see there were actual cats.

Everybody should witness a live Cat Empire show!

by RockinTheSuburbs on 2009-11-25The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

So great. They're such a happy group, which is a nice change from a lot of live acts you see these days. You can't help but dance and cheer at every song - even sway at the slower ones. Incredibly talented musicians and a great live act!

    Cat Empire = Absolute Must-see

by MiniRig on 2009-11-25The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

The Cat Empire gave Winnipeg the most amazing show in the history of mankind, with a surging energy that is, well, unmatched in the musical kingdom. The way the solos sent shivers down your spine can only be compared to the pounding of the floor as everyone gave all they had into dancing their hearts out. Encore, Cat Empire, encore...

    Cat empire

by bobbo2222 on 2009-11-25The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

Not the best acoustics in this venue, but you sure couldn't fault the band's talent or energy. A hell of a show! Oh, and they could have left their opening band in Victoria...waaaay too mellow for that crowd.

Had been told how much fun the concerts of these guys are. We waited an hour for these guys to come on stage, which I found to be a let down. No audience interaction came across as being self indulgent and stuck up. I would not go see Cat Empire again.

    The Cat Empire rocks!

by freetibet on 2009-11-23MacEwan Hall - Calgary

They are great performers. I enjoyed how they showcased each member of the group. Nothing like dancing to an awesome band. Unfortunately you can't control certain individuals that attend the event. There were some jerks who thought this was a punk rock concert and decided to bash all those around them. It took security a while to calm them down to a less violent fashion. Regardless of the jerks efforts to ruin the gig, they failed, because The Cat Empire rocked!

    Amazing

by ronaldoii on 2009-11-22The Starlite Room - Edmonton

Very high energy band. Every one of the band members played every note with all they had. Sound was awesome. Definately one of those bands that heard live sound as good and better than they do on their records.

The Cat Empire had the crowd in high energy and spirits right from the get-go. Seemed like they were having as much fun as all of us. Really amazing to hear that kind of performance genre in person and in such a suitable venue to get up close and personal

    Cat Empire was terrific

    by Andy12345 on 2009-11-22MacEwan Hall - Calgary

Excellent show. Lots of enthusiasm and life! A little bit too much soloing for my taste, but still very involving and lively.
