I went to The Cat Empire's Whistler show a few years ago at the GLC and they played most of their 2003 and 2004 albums - what an incredible show! I bought three albums, raved about them to my friends and loaded all their music on my iPod which I play relentlessly!!!!. They proved during that show that they are one of the most energetic, tight, varied and upbeat acts to come out of Australia - a great show for cutting a rug! Since that show, I have been waiting eagerly for them to return and purchased tickets to their Nov 17 show as soon as I heard they were returning to Vancouver.
Firstly, the venue is awesome! Having just seen ACDC at BC Place and being thoroughly disappointed with the sound (I heard the same from friends who caught U@ in the same venue), the Commodore Ballroom is one of the best (if not the best) live music venues left in Vancouver (RIP Richards on Richards). The crowd was awesome, too. Full house, great attitude, mix of ages. Disclaimer: The only problem with the Commodore is their bright crowd white lighting. They need to put filters on their white lights because for some of the seated sections along the sides and upper levels of the ballroom, it's BLINDING!
Now for the show. The first act - didn't catch the guy/band's name, but they were really good. A bit too mellow for the opening act when you'd expect they'd want to get the crowd warmed up for the Empire. Nonetheless, they were tight and I enjoyed their music (although repetitive at times).
Enter The Cat Empire. Such a great stage presence, musically gifted brass players, unique mix of musical styles, but that's when it started to go downhill for me. I say "me" because clearly the crowd enjoyed the show. But, I have to say, I was surprisingly disappointed overall. I was expecting the same high energy, upbeat show I saw/danced to in Whistler, but instead the show was loud (and I mean screeching loud!), full of vocal experimentation, long winded solos, neverending moments, ethnic/new world scale practice sessions and interjections of some of the new and old hits (which for the most saved the show because they remain upbeat and tight in instrumentation and vocals).
Please guys - avoid practicing how long you can draw out your downbeat/flat solos that don't lend themselves to dancing, and stick to a more upbeat repertoire for your live performances.
I will pay to see these guys again, but hope that they save practicing vocal scales for the garage and give the crowd their best! I respect the fact that every band grows and explores the boundaries of their music, but based on the fact the new song they played sounds more like that of their 2003 and 2004 tunes, I'd say stick to what you do best - it was a great tune and I can't wait to pick up their new album in the spring 2010.
(Still) Love The Cat Empire!
Come back to Vancouver soon, guys :)
