  • Save your money

by Dancer2 on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

Moscow Ballet was a disappointment!! For $125/ticket we didn't even get a live orchestra. Quite appalling. After the first Act I felt like I'd been hoodwinked into parting with my money and time. Considering the reputations of the Bolshoi and the Kirov Ballet companys, watching the Moscow Ballet was like viewing a community college recital; without the earnestness or sincerity. Characterizations were lackluster, the corps was dreadful, unsynchronized, messy and several blank outs in sequencing were witnessed on stage and this was by the adult cast, not the earnest and sincere volunteer local Calgary dancers. The male partners were frankly and literally unsupportive. The one shiny exception to this evening of mediocre was the female lead, Ekaterina Bortyakova, whose technique and artistry were unparalleled on the stage by her colleagues. The lighting was also quite dreadful for the Jubilee, did they not pay for a tech rehearsal? Should they ever visit Calgary again, I will stay home!

  • expensive and disappointing

tickets were too pricy for the quality of performance. the dancers were out of sync, costumes were mediocre, and the story line at times was hard to follow with the introduction of unknown characters. in addition the music was ridiculously repetitive and drab, mildly entertaining but would have much preferred just to stay at home and watch disney's cinderella.

  • Excellent....Moscow Ballet...Nutcracker

by WadeScott on 2009-11-11TCU Place - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

This production was very well done...the dancers were excellent...costumes, stage props and design were wonderful. Would see again. Also thought it was great that they incorporate local dancers into the production ( great experience for them).

Very enjoyable except for the crying children in the audience.

  • Moscow Ballet - enjoyable

by Berni on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

We enjoyed the Moscow Ballet Performance and especially appreciated that local talent were invited to join the professional dancers. Our Nieces were two of the fortunate ones who were chosen and we felt they were given a great opportunity and were proud of their accomplishments. However, we feel it would have been a nice touch if their names had been included in Tuesday evening's performance schedule. What a nice keepsake that would have been for them and for the family. Thank you for considering this in the future.

  • Very Disappointing

by crappy on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

I was actually really surprised that for a Russian Ballet you would have thought it would have been more presentable. The music was boring, no orchestra or singing at all. And the Cinderella Story wasn't even a proper Cinderella story? Who puts seasons in Cinderella? I left at intermission and have to say that Jenn Beaupre, whom was the opening act and only sang 3 songs, was by far the best part of the night. I went home with her CD.

  • Disappointing

by Elly22 on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I have always heard that Russian Ballets are some of the best in the world so I guess I anticipated this to be spectacular. I quite honestly found the dancing to be a little boring and unenthusiastic. There was a few moments that really impressed me but they seemed to be few and far between. Most of the numbers felt very "out of sync" between all the dancers. I've always loved the story of Cinderella and was more excited for this ballet than others I had been to in the past and it definitely didn't live up to its hype unfortunately. In addition while I understand parents wanting to culture their children and have them experience great things like the ballet, for something starting at 8pm I think its a little ridiculous. Kids everywhere were screaming at different points throughout the evening. There was a very unhappy little girl in front of me who didn't keep quiet for more than a minute throughout as she kept telling her mom she was tired and wanted to go to bed. I understand there was no matinee show but I think it was a bit much.

  • Exquisitely done!!

Sadly, the Moscow ballet has had its day. The dancers appeared clumsy and out of time with the music. The performance was anything but delicate and refined.

  • Moscow ballet was exceptional

by dlr1 on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

The choreography was difficult to follow and some moves a little fake, but the ballet is always amazing on what the human body can do when trained.

  • Not impressed, but I did laugh

by chickas on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

Performance was terrible. The dancers lacked unison, precision and technical know how. The sloppy performance was enough for people to leave during the show, and many did not return after the intermission. I did like all the color use in the costumes, as well as the comedy they were clearly trying to show case. It was not a ballet to be taken seriously, the dancers were not even in time with the music, which was prerecorded by the way. There was not an orchastra performing. Overall for the price it was a joke. I could have gone to 6 movies with what the tix cost me and I would have had more value for my money.

  • Traditional but superb technique

Not bad, not mind blowing, but amazing control from the Moscow performers.

  • Cinderella disappointing...

by JJ99 on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

The Russian ballerina's were outstanding however, the local ballet students calibre was not and it took away from the beauty of this production. To spend $125 on a ticket to see ballerina's fall, sloppy technical skills and off timing is not what I had in mind. I'm surprised the Moscow Ballet would perform with this skill level. I also don't remember this event being advertised as being partnered with local ballet schools.

  • Cinderella, Moscow Ballet

by formerballetfan on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

I cannot believe that I sat through the entire ballet for over 2 hours - dancers out of sync; bumping into one another; a story that was rather confusing to say the least. My daughter and I were not impressed with the performance at all. We will support Alberta Ballet; however, we will not be attending any Moscow Ballet performances in the future. The costumes were however beautiful. Sincerely BR

  • Average Performance

by Schlotz on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Fairly disappointed based on the reputation. Most dancers exhibited similar skill level of the local Alberta Ballet company, except for Cinderalla, & Fairly God Mother. Prince's leaping skills lacked amplitude in the back split leg/not horizontal. Choreography exhibited elements similar to the Nutcracker [Arabian, Kosac dance, etc.] and seemd out of place in Cinderella. Music was depressive except to the pas deux. A local singer perormed at the beginning & lasted 20+ minutes which had nothing to do with the ballet itself. Would have preferred not to have seen this. Thought it was a waist of my time & it would have been better to have left this out as it delayed the ballet performance.

  • Delightful entertainment

by Heylady on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Very well done. Local talent was integrated seamlessly. Little ones were so cute. My only criticism of this was that many people paid money to take very young children, who chatted and munched through the performance. The story line is a bit different from the traditional Disney Cinderella. Certainly worth the time and effort to go.

  • Moscow Ballet

by summerville on 2009-11-11Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The singing at the beginning was not accepted and not welcome made the show too long. Expected a more polished performance. Lots of mistakes and several people out right fell. Never saw this type of thing in a professional company before. For the price expected something much closer to perfection.

  • Moscow Ballet

by Lulu23 on 2009-11-10Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

After seeing the performance, I was confused as to what the underlining issue was. Was this supposed to be a fundraiser and that is why the tickets were so expensive? The addition of the local dancers was a good idea but what was the requirements that they needed to have? Bottom line, there was some very good talent that was shown during the performance, but for the price of the ticket, it did not meet the quality of a traditional ballet that I am used to seeing. I really hope most of the money for the ticket went to the charity that they were supporting.

The ballet was amazing. I like the interpretation of the Russian Dance at the beginning of the perfomance. Little participants were touching. And the music of Prokofiev!!!!!!!!!!!!!
